I made my last post without having had a chance to read the posts about Hendry,

I've just been catching up and am truly shocked and sadened by the news of his death. Its hard to know what I can add that hasnt already been said.

I've had my own brushes with severe depression in the past and I'm a similar age to him so its given me a lot to think about...

Its been cold and miserable down in the south this week, I should probably write up another Scimitar update but I'm not sure I can be bothered tonight.

Working on the car has highlighted just how sloppy my tool sorage can be. I seem to waste ages just looking for the tools I need. I was after a clean, warm indoor activity so have spent the last couple of evenings sorting out all my drill bits...

They were formerly sorted into 3 assorted boxes of mixed sizes and it was always an nightmare to find the one you wanted. Years of buying at car boots has left be with a reasonable selection, mostly good british made bits by dormer or presto.

Heres a line of metric's size ordered:

I then took a drawer out of the cabinet which the pillar drill stands on.

767.jpg

And made up a few dividers:

Would be nice to make the dividers in steel but old card seems like a good start.

I then thought it would be nice to have some impereal drill bits, so filled an old NUBO stand with the correct sizes.

770.jpg

Which left a huge pile of imperal bits that I don't use much which I've put into this old shop counter display. Turns out I have nearly a full range so I've actually ordered a few new presto bits on ebay to complete the set!

I have also reached the conclusion I definately need to get a girlfreind...

I showed this to my other half.  She suggests that you don't lead any conversation with 'Do you want to see my drill bits?'

Good advice.

EDIT:  I'll add that this is exactly the sort of thing I should be doing and approve thoroughly.

It's a snow day for me today. Think I'll have a tidy up of my garage too.

Giving your bits a good sorting out is a fine way for a young man to spend an evening in the absence of a girlfriend. I wish I was half as organised.

How come your Rover has got an LSD then? Never heard of that in a 45 before.

I read it as not as good as a Rover 45 when on lsd.

The drill bit set up is impressive.

Mine were like that once...............1967 I think it was.

Today, Australia Post finally un-lost my new top radiator hose, it only took them 3 weeks!

So, it's fitting time. Assume the position:

First, air box out

Second, loosen old hose and drain coolant

So much for my precision* placed funnels

Third, old hose out

Fourth, install new hose with new industrial strength jubilee clips

Fifth, reinstall freshly cleaned air box

Sixth, refill coolant, fire it up and check for leaks

None!

Seventh, stand back and admire your work

Yeah but nobodys coming for them.

..... we have a duvet rolled up in the bin, to go... I'll get it out and make a 'snowman roughsleeper' with just a heed poking out. Got a few bits of black stone left for eyes but, if I make him asleep >> wont need them :)

I posted an advert for the maestro on retro rides . It’s like the Mary Celeste over there there’s tumble weed rolling between web pages.

What happened it used to be buzzing?

I have stirred up the Carina II thread. But, then, I would ;)

All the sales were split out into different groupings and the sales section just went deathly quiet..

To many rules and enforced cheerfulness. Oh and KGF cars dominating the for sales pages so nobody looks for anything under sub 20k anymore. There was a 10page thread a while back asking why their couldn't be a motorcycles section which the mods never bothered replying to.

It did seem to kill it but the whole site seems dead. I also thought the non rolling year 2000 rule was daft . Lots of interesting stuff built in early 2000’s.

At least when you do get one your all sorted for when she asks for a good drilling

It is strange, especially when you go to the Retro-Rides Gathering, and it's HUGE with a really nice vibe, just like the forum used to have.

Over the past couple of days I have mostly discovered that folding bikes with 20" wheels are shit in the snow.

Not as shit as a modern train.

When we had the thick snow in 2005 I took the Brompton to the station in Hastings and caught the first train to London, which left about 2 hours late. It got as far as Crowhurst and then couldn't get up the really slight slope out of the station. When they decided to take it back to Hastings, I got out and cycled (slid) down the steep hill and then rode up the 1in3 hill and all the rest of the way home. I had decent tyres on (Schwalbe Marathon) and the main problem was the snow jamming up between the tyres and the mudguards and the brakes (which are pathetic anyway) freezing up totally.

I am determined (it seems) to run out of food/milk/drink because I didn't panic buy. All I want to do is eat! This is very strange because I rarely do normally and what I do eat I share with the dogs, I just told Chester to 'fuck off and get his own' over a cheese sandwich, so he raided the bin for the wrapper which he is now chewing up with a look on his face like: 'woe is me, no one loves me or feeds me or takes me out in the wonderful white stuff that makes my todger cold'.

Can't understand it, m.ust be some kind of evolutionary thing where I am preparing for the next ice age. I expect to be a fat bastard before the weekend!

I think (think) trains running off third rail have to run low power in snow due to the risk of arcing, which could cause the shoe gear to practically weld itself to the conductor rail.

This has happened in the past few days.

Not good on hills then.

Diesel probably would have been fine.

My grump is that the weather is trying it's best to ruin my weekend plans.

Fancied a drive in the snow. Battery flat, charger lost, so I had to improvise with transformer, diode and resistor.

1990 Tamiya is a typical Japanese soft-roader - big image, big wheels and 2WD so useless in the snow.

Stuck.

edit - so took this to the end of the lane

and back.

Had to use the diff. lock to get back up the drive. This is engaged by a little electric motor which puts the transfer box into neutral on the way to locked.

So today it had a sulk and left me with only neutral until I had pushed the car downhill a bit when it popped back into gear.

Why not use proper manual lever f.f.s.?

How come your Rover has got an LSD then? Never heard of that in a 45 before.

It has a 'box from a 620ti fitted, but with the ratios changed to diesel ratios.  The chap I bought it off was a bit mental and spent shitloads on it - it originally had an all-singing-all-dancing Quaife LSD, but that shat itself after a few thousand miles so he took it out and fitted the (rebuilt) 620ti 'box.  It's also had pretty much every conceivable performance upgrade apart from a remap (which would have been far more cost effective and is something I will eventually get done), as well as the suspension and uprated front brakes from a ZS190, and three (count 'em) strut braces.

God bless the RAV4. It got me home from work yesterday afternoon even though it's 2WD and has road tyres that are legal, but not in their first flush of youth.
