Not a clue myself, but jap crap = reliable right?

Posted

Yeah but I don’t know if that’s a good thing :D

A nice drive if you like basic. I had to drive one for work and was ready to hate but it won me over.

I did use ear plugs though, but then I would in any Diesel van of the same period.

If I didn't already have a van, It'd be on the shortlist

Tim, it’s a couple hundred quid to you if it helps. I can take some pictures but it’s genuinely lovely. Only thing that doesn’t work is the AC. PE02HVR for the mot checker

These are nice cars.  I had a T5 and it was a proper bit of kit.

They can occasionally do head gaskets, but that's probably due to the lack of maintenance common in mid-engined vans.  They're actually not that slow up to about 40, but take their sweet time after that.  Narrow and brilliant turning circle so useful in town, and as Wobbler says gr8 4 drifting on wet roundabouts.

Those of you who have used Removemycar, how strict is their definition of 'complete'? The website says 'Complete and with wheels'... £152 is my quote, but the car won't be complete when I'm done with it, although will have wheels and will drive onto the flatbed...

Depends how much they look at it - it’ll be a local yard that will come and get it.

If you’ve taken very visible stuff off, they’ll notice.

There will be visible stuff taken off. I'll do a proper quote when I've got everything off it. £100 seems the bottom value.

I use to love Whizzer and Chips. Once got a letter published too.

Aye, sold it in Aug. Was proving a point about reliable* Japanese motoring.

I took that picture in late January when I’d just collected the thing from Stourbridge and it promptly kettled.

Opened the rear door on the Civic to find the rubber seal coming off. For some unknown reason, it seems to have shrunk and won't seat properly. Ended up pulling it off and giving it a good stretch.

Might also explain why, recently, it's been smelling a bit fusty inside. I have checked the carpets and none feel wet though.

This came today. Only two people in the office correctly identified it. One because his dad used to take the rotor arm out of their family car when the car was left at Dublin airport. The other because she restored a classic mini a couple of years ago with her uncle and it became her first car.

I bought it mostly to take apart to see how they work (without breaking the cars) and also for yet another project that probably never will get done. Want to play with it and make my own fully electronic ignition system.

For £27 posted, it's incredibly cheap. Quality doesn't seem too bad, but then I haven't had it in action...

^ I was saying to mrs fp the other day in conversation, I wonder how many people in 10 years time will be able to identify things like points and condenser and other related stuff

The lad who works with me is 28. Proper time served trained mechanic.

I was timing an old L-Jet six series one day when he appeared.

"What's that?"

"Timing light."

"How does that work?"

"You've never seen or used one?"

"I've seen one I think. The old guy had one in his tool box, but I've never seen one being used."

A valeter was handed the keys of an E21 316. 15 minutes later,

"It won't start."

"Pull the choke out. Press the pedal once and it'll start. If you've flooded it crank it over with your foot to the floor till it starts."

"Right."

15 minutes later,

"What's a choke?"

Volvo has new tyres. They look better as they have proper sidewalls and tread, and as an added bonus it now stops better too as it doesn't have shit Chinese ditchfinders on the front and tyres from 2003 on the back.

Could be worse, in the USA it's frequently reported that many are stumped by manual boxed. But tbh, that's likely to happen here once electric cars become the norm (almost all auto).

is you underfloor hideyhole damp/wet?

spaceships apparently can leak from round outer light cluster, fuel filler recess & split seam sealer where the black roof trim meets rear tailgate gutter

No, completely dry and there is an old map in there that would have got wet if there was. I did have a quick Google, found that and check the other day.

Might double check the pollen filter. I did change that earlier this year (I think) but it gets clogged up pretty heavily with city driving.

Went to a local charity shop today looking for work trousers, or indeed any other workwear: hoodies, sweatshirts, etc etc.  Tried on a nice leather jacket, which was fine around my chest and shoulders but just not long enough in the body.  Fail.  I didn't buy anything.  But... the poor woman in there (working solo) was so cold she had her heater on and we had a bit of banter about that and the things I'd come in for.  So feeling sorry for her, I went next door to the cafe and bought her a takeaway cup of tea to warm her up.  Well I hadn't spent anything in the shop, it was the least I could do.

My mate has a six month old Movano minibus. Broke down on Wednesday. Recovered to main dealer and the clutch had gone. So new one fitted under warranty. It has done a full six thousand miles. All Vauxhall etc.
