attachicon.gifSE Owl Cow Down 6 Jan 08 blue_980.jpg

I saw 5 short eared Owls in the field behind my house this morning. Couldn't get a decent picture of them as it was foggy but this is what they look like. I'm not an authority on birds but I believe they come here from Russia.

Bloody foreigners coming over here taking our Owls jobs  :-D

Been and fetched a gearbox for the GTV today locally. Took that and the complete heater assembly I've ordered from eBay to the garage for shenanigans next week.

Going to send off the box to a specialist for a check over/clean up/new bearings as appropriate, so will probably install that in Feb some time.

Will take pics and update on how the dash removal goes!

"Looks like it might be warm tonight, let's try and sort the Civic's brake pads..."

Two hours later and the piston is completely stuck in the bore and won't recess, looks like it's heat seized in place and can't be shifted. Our work light is a Land Rover spotlight wired to a car battery, about a hour in the wires catch fire and that's the end of that, working by the light of my phone. It's not warm, I get up to stretch my legs and stand in a puddle which shatters. It's not warm.

We decided to test the stove...

Fingers and toes are promptly defrosted and spiders shower down on us as they try and escape the smoke. One new brake pad is angle grinded in half so we can actually get the caliper back together and we call it a night. Going to get another caliper from the scrappy, luckily I ordered two sets of brake pads by accident! Hopefully the other side is less fucked...

Also couldn't find a hammer so used an axe. Proper job.

Civic caliper are fucking useless . Lucas quality ! The worst bit on the whole car

What are you using for a windback tool?

It is easier to wind the piston back if you bolt the cylinder part of the caliper back onto the hub carrier without the sliding part, so that the slider isn't in the way of the wind-back tool.

An indoor wood burner with no chimney?

Anyway, as you were.

Then found out the new paint on the Mercedes has gone a bit weird. I've already been in touch with Barry and he's said to take some photos and he'll look and see when he can book it in for rectification.

I've no idea what's causing it- itwas fine last week.

A week , a poxy week of not been used , and half of the currently legal fleet has given up.

New Merc - flat tyre.

Arosa- dead short or earth problem.

E34- flat battery.

Old Merc- needed a sniff of Easystart yesterday , glow plug warning been intermittent for about 4 months, I of course ignored it ! It was -7 and hadn't been used for 5 days, started ok today at 04.30 and -3.

206cc - exhaust back box fell off.

On the plus side the Gaylander( 2 weeks unused) fired straight up and the Fiat 500 is as reliable as ever.

Whilst it was sunny this morning, my and my lad serviced Astra and Omega.

When I say service I mean, change the oil, oil filter and air filter.

Using GM parts and Oil via my new Autobahnstormers trade club card.

4 x 5 litres 10W40 semi synthetic comes out at 48 quid with Vat (We have 10 litres left over now !!!!)

Filters came out at £28 with the VAT which is about the price at ECPs when there's a sale on.

Oil Filter on the Omega was the messiest job I've done for a while.  Old oil all over the place.

Still it's all done for now.  Except I priced up 6 spark plugs and £55 for GM one's with trade club seems excessive.  I will search for a more cheap alternative.

Did the astra last time around so didn't bother with them

Next week I plan to do BINI and Mx5.  Also need 4 plugs for BINI. IIRC they are pricy too.

"Special" plug socket too, if it's a later one...

It has a chimney. It doesn't really take the smoke anywhere apart from slightly above the stove but the setup isn't quite final... Also turns out it's not a wood burner, it's got a grate in it so it can burn most things. We were working outside so the shed filling up with smoke wasn't too big of a concern, we'd occasionally pop in and jam our hands over the grate and then piss off again before the coughing and stinging eyes started.

Steam power conversion, it's all about the torque.

I still can't get over how things are in rural Oregon.

Pure shite on the roads still being driven. Beat up old Suburbans, Jeeps, GMC's and even old 80's Japanese trucks and cars. Seeing a first gen Suzuki Vitara with a massive slab of wood nailed to the front acting as a bumper never get's old.

I even saw a Camaro Iron Duke yesterday. AN IRON DUKE! :D

Tomorrow, I'm riding shotgun in a early 90's, first gen Dodge Ram 2500, cummings diesel powered, to spend the day at a shooting range! Then heading to get drunk at a local bar after. Because 'Murica!  And Im on holiday.

The starter motor on the Fiesta keeps jamming whilst starting it, obviously 29000 miles of short journeys has done it the world of good, I've ordered what is apparently a good secondhand unit of eBay for £20 delivered, what do we think the likelihood of that being much better is?!

My daughter had the baby the other day so it was left to me last night to recover her car from hospital car park. It's a manual kia sportage. I have been wafting in my Japanese auto bus for a while now and driving a manual was so bloody tiring . I am getting old or lazy probably both.

Personally just order a brush box or have the old one reconditioned after you get the cheap spare on. Lots of factors kill motors. Heat, dust, resistances in the chain (basically more heat) see if there's a couple of types fitted as likely they fitted as small as possible to a later iteration of the car. Old transit Di used to have a starter with a winding twice as big at the mk3 stage than at mk5 as they found they were adequate for normal service. Or failed out of warranty if you like.

That was my thinking, even if the replacement isn't any better at least I'll be able to get the old one repaired or I'll have a unit to hand in so i haven't got to pay a surcharge if i end up going down the buying a new unit route.

Collection mission has hit a bit of a setback - currently sat on a stationary (possibly closed) M4, big accident up ahead (3 fire engines gone past so far). Doubtless twats driving too fast / close in fog.
