A year to the day since my kid's mother's life support machine was switched off.

The Maxus has just gone straight through its MOT for the second time in a row.  So that was a nice surprise.

Well the garage fitted the new spring to the Merc strut and refused payment, so that was another good thing that's happened today.  So it's all back together and ready for its retest on Monday.

In less good "things that have happened today", the Mobylette fell over and smashed its front right indicator lens.  Fortunately it's broken into five reasonably large pieces which should be easy enough to superglue back together.

my scooter is outside my french doors of the front room and really could smell petrol... turns out the thing decided to leak petrol out the fuel pipe/carb .. hence run about like a lunatic looking for a manual fuel tap .. hatefull thing still wont run.. carb will be coming off again..

It's back!!!!

So 4 weeks and a day after dropping it off, I went to Ferndown today to collect it. The bill was absolutely stunning but they had made it as low as could be without sacrificing the work. It's still not absolutely perfect, the rear brakes are going to need doing next MOT and the back box looks like it'll need to go too, but it drives so well. I was a bit concerned at the temp gauge on the way home but 156s do not have gauge damping, the level shows the actual temperature and fluctuations between 80-100 are supposedly normal according to forums. The garage reckon the water pump was original too, which is madness given it's on its fourth cambelt.

Best photo I can get of the sill now:

PXL_20250530_153355990.jpg.7e0af4e6a12a81701ec66cba3561fb94.jpg

This is what they had found:

OSBON6.jpg.d407a69caa420292dc67f086d2681384.jpg

They've absolutely coated it with dynax underneath, I was shown all the work they'd done and it's proper top quality.

I'm getting the tyres done the week after next as they are all perished.

In other news, annoyingly, I absolutely HATE the Corolla. I really liked my bug eye 1.3, so this is unusual. Can't get comfy, can't seem to enjoy it at all. Can't really sell it until I've got the V5 though. I've driven hundreds of cars and never had one that I've detested so quickly. Odd!

Glad youve got it back and all is good, but i do have a question, does it have a floor mat tek screwed to the inner arch now?

Posted

@Stinkwheel

They give that impression but no that's the actual arch liners. Thankfully removing them revealed nothing nasty and it's all dynax'd up now.

Ours may be different as it is a 2001 V6. The temp gauge is very slow to raise and on a cool day at normal speeds never gets above half. If it is made to idle for long enough it will get up to just over 90 and then the electric fan cuts in and takes it back down to a little under 90. The needle is always steady and appears to be damped.

I think it's a twin spark phenomenon, the 156 doesn't have the ability to dampen the temp gauge (according to several very confident people on an Alfa forum). I must admit it's a novelty to have one with a working thermostat. The 2.4 I had previously would not budge more than a quarter.

E12 Corollas have that sort of carpet like arch liner. It seems to work well.

It's a warm, close evening here and I wanted a bit of fresh air, so I've set about the Honda's headlamps with the remains of a Holts headlamp kit (I reckon I've done 3 cars with it now - the first was the Laguna estate @Rocket88 bought from me)

Before:

After:

I know that it's not perfect, but it's a lot better.

I've also rebuilt the back brakes as there were some shims missing causing them to bind- a lot of fun had finding that particular fault!

Just talking to my 2cv mechanic friend. The gearbox was getting noisier this year. He spoke to the uk guru Rick Pembro this afternoon who confirmed bearing failure. We have decided to do a refurb of my ‘box but will obviously take a bit longer than an exchange unit. Have scheduled it for September/ October. Perhaps I can get some money back by declaring SORN?

G3 polishing compound and a felt wheel on my angle grinder seems to do the job really well for me. Much quicker and a better job than any polishing kit I've used.

That really is madness, especially given that these have plastic impellers which have a tendency to spin on the shaft when they get a bit worn.

I used G3 on the Maxus headlights last week after they received a strong advisory for poor beam pattern at the last MOT.  Brought them up very well.

Just laying in bed and had one of those moments where something dawns on you.

@brownnova, did I speak to you on the phone this morning? 😂

I didn’t twig at the time, but just saw your name on here and put two and two together.

Do you work for a well known classic car insurer and your name begins with J? If so… there’s a strong possibility that you did!

Good reduction in quoted premium, would use again… if only the seller of the vehicle in question was as inclined to drop his price…

Not sure if they can be compared to those, but is similar.

Fleamarket haul today. The most valuable are the Austin A105 and Singer Gazelle - as more expensive versions of other cars neither sold particularly well in period and probably few models too.

Myself and my two sons have been doing a bit of work on the MR2. Brake calipers now removed and will be sent off to be refurbished. I was planning to use a company called Bigg Red butt they no longer replenish brakes so on there look out for someone else. My son gave it a wash too.

Next job, replace the fuel pump which means dropping the tank. Just working out the best way to get it high enough in the air.

Mama, I just sold a car

The man had already paid, now he's trailered it away

Mama, regrets have just begun

But I'm already at n + 1

Mama, ooh, didn't think it would make me cry

I guess I can always buy another car tomorrow

Carry on, carry on as if nothing really matters to me

(Bah da da dum)

IMG_20250511_195234.jpg.10b06c8848f75e7bf289bfeb52b4acca.jpg

I see a little puddle of LHM
BX,  BX, will you do the hydropneumatic?
Thunderbolt and lightning, very, very frightening me
(LHM) LHM, (LHM) LHM, LHM Fluid marvelleux
But I'm just a poor boy, nobody loves me
He's just a poor boy from a poor family
Spare him his life from this jalopy

Easy come, easy go, it's time to let it go

Staying in the fold, I'll let the new owner reveal themselves if they wish.
