Bought another 960.

This one's a 3.0 CD saloon.

No, I don't know why, either.

Found where the water is getting into the boot of the Maestro... found some rust bubbles in the seam sealer too which I have chosen to ignore because I don't want to feel like a Scottish Triumph owner.

Got one with tow rope in shot? Calendar shot!

Sadly not! I could always recreate it for the sake of it...

Also realised how painful it is to tow a car designed to be pulled by a screw-in towing hook, without one, having realised that it was missing at the critical moment. Another trip to ebay.

A bluebird towing a Mondeo probably isn't a usual sight.

Years ago I towed a mate's broken Saab 900 T8 to a Saab specialist for repair behind my Kia Pride.  That got some bemused looks.  Managed it fine though.

A mate of mine years ago helped me recover my 1987 Rover 820e which was towed on a trailer from Swindon on the back of a Renault Avantime 😁

I have a picture somewhere....

I will have to dig that pic of RD's J9 towing my Piazza out from my archives :)

Kids round here are so bored they're shooting out bus windows after dark with air rifles - they've had to divert from some parts of their normal route.

This happened to me once. I was on a bus in Grenoble in 1998, when a brick came through a window 6 feet away from me one evening. A delightful* experience.

There's nothing new under the sun. This happened to me in 1988. I was on the last Routemaster of the night in Lordshill when there was a loud bang upstairs. Even the driver heard it despite being sat on a Leyland O. 600. It was practically the end of the route and I was the only passenger on board so me and the conductor went upstairs to have a look and found this.

We think it was a catapult as we found a small round stone on the floor. As it was the last trip we switched the lights off and drove straight to my stop to drop me off (it was only four stops and I was familiar with most of the crews, the clippie was a young lass called Jenny).

This was in the garage the next day.  A bit more glass had fallen out on the way back.

It was RM 2011 in case @LightBulbFun is wondering.

I got another hire van at work today. But this one is the same as my normal van except it's silver instead of red.

IMG_20201215_102755.thumb.jpg.71dbe435d55f7c3d1e89bdeee5851558.jpg

Though it is six years newer than mine and has a few differences. One of which is this.

I don't think they will ever spec Royal Mail vans with touchscreens. I hope not anyway. It took me ages  to find 6 Music, the whole screen just seemed a mess.

But even better, this van had a double passenger seat where ours have one and a cubby hole/armrest thing that you can keep your drink and lunch in. This is the double seat.

They look a bit narrow from there but let's look a bit closer.

Interesting leg room*

And that is a standard takeaway box that I had my lunch in. That seat is less than twice the width of a takeaway box with about 4 inches of legroom. How is that possibly usable?

It's for when you pick up hitching Cornish Pixies.

Thankfully aside from.one sticky brush we seem to have escaped otherwise unscathed.  Which is nice as a replacement is about £150.

Those two-passenger seats are hateful and only just useable even in big vans such as Sprinters and big Transits.  That centre seat is as you say, utterly useless!

Doesn't it convert into a handy desk, tho' ? Some of them do.

I'd actually rather like a centre seat in my Combo for when I want to take 40 winks at a service station - it's a bit uncomfortable having to contort yourself over two seats and the handbrake in the Combo.

There’s gotta be a joke about reliability in there, hasn’t there?

Thanks!

@Pete-M I'd spotted this one on my travels. A wee bit more than I wanted to spend for a project but certainly the sort of thing I'm after. As per my thread, coupe, non sunroof, ideally white but it's not a deal breaker. Engine unimportant as I'd be putting something noisy in it back here. Over 4 0 tears old would be nice to get tax/MOT exemption would be good too.

The biggest question, is, when will we be able to travel again and how much will it cost to import one in the new year?

Decided to do something about scooter being in bits and in the way so I've bought used oil tank unit because it won't turn off draining oil into the carb...

Out of curiosity I had a look at what the import situation might be like - this is my guesswork, I'm not an importer or a lawyer.

Currently, import duties on a car being brought into the UK from outside of the EC are calculated on bill of sale (purchase price) + freight costs.  VAT is then payable on bill of sale + freight + duty paid.   At the moment, non EC Manufactured Cars pay 10% import duty and 20% VAT for private and commercial imports.

Assuming we leave on WTO terms this is likely to be the worst case that would then apply for cars from the EU as well.

So on that Manta:

4800 + 300 (freight) + 480 (10% duty) = 5580

5580 + VAT = 6696 Total.

6696/1.12 = GBP5978

Need to do a NOVA within 14 days or they start fining you.  NOVA is now through the government gateway which you may have set up already, I do for my taxes.  You may also need a certificate of conformity from Opel/Vauxhall/PSA.

Unfortunately, I have no idea how much it would cost to import in the new year.

I imagine it would be similar import taxes to bringing something in from the USA. Something like 10% of "market value" + VAT.

When I brought the Escort in back in 2014 the tax due was Zero, but that was in the good old days before the Brexiters took over.

As for lockdown rules, currently visitors from the UK to Germany are subject to a 10 day isolation period (which can be shortened to 5 days after a negative Covid-19 test). Germany has just today gone into lockdown until 10th January.

When I know more I'll try and do an explanation post.

Deep joy, yet another Central London run today....

Last Monday : Mansfield to Central London

Last Tuesday : Mansfield to Central London

Last Wednesday : Mansfield to Central London

Last Thursday Mansfield to Central London

Last Friday : Nottingham to Holmfirth (nice scenery)

Saturday : Shirebrook to Central London

Sunday : Nottingham to Burntwood, then Derby to Bradford

Monday Mansfield to Central London

Tuesday : Nottingham to Wimbledon (to the traincare depot for the spotters amongst you, I was delivering some horns, missus)

Today Mansfield to Central London

TBF,  the Mansfield to Central London one is a regular run and pays well (and the shipper usually pays same or next day, good for the cash flow), and I can pretty much drive it blindfold. Only sticking point is the M1 Northbound in rush hour. If I can get past J12 by 5pm it's usually all right ish...failing that it turns into a fuckfest pretty darn quick. Today will be a fuckfest. Be interesting to see the impact Tier 3 is having in that London. I suspect not a jot of difference

I'm no economist (I did do it at A level but that was a long time ago) but I've always struggled with the justification for charging VAT on duty.  Maybe someone with more knowledge of these things can enlighten me.
