Split front to rear line..

Handy as it was supposed to replace the Audi on Monday.

Least it never happened with the Burd driving!

I went to view a car with Father and Brother Fumbler. Lovely.

Brother Fumbler's gone out of his mind and has bought said car, an P38 Range Rover HSE. God rest his soul.

The good news is only the sunroof is the major thing not working and the bill of death hasn't graced us with its presence.....................................yet. There's still time.

So I was in the boozer on Friday night and met a chap I've never seen before called "Slippery"

He's got a garage that he's closing down because he's going blind.

Everything must go coz the lease is up soon.

Amongst the cars he mentioned was a '76 Cadillac, an '82 Buick Park Avenue and a Fiat 600 all at 1000 euros each.

If I had a sensible head, I'd be saying "don't be daft, never buy a car from a bloke in a pub"

I haven't got a sensible head.

I'm viewing the cars on Monday.

Slippery drove home despite being half blind and a bit pissed...

Has anyone supercharged a diesel?

Yeah Mazda did a Comprex 626 diesel with a supercharger and apparently it was awful.

All that work they poured into the Complex, and still only 75hp. Misery, and therefore perfect shiter.

Got up too early today. This was the time I left the house.

But it was worth it.

After a brief catch up with skattrd I then headed off to ACA in King's Lynn. Despite being a non-turbo auto it's surprisingly quick, and the furnace of a heater was very welcome today after the chilly standing around at the auction.

Not home yet. Just having a break before hitting the M25.

Mmm, pillarless.

I've sold my Allegro to the guy who runs the garage next to my lockup. He's better placed to get it fixed up and back on the road having a proper garage with ramps and stuff, time and unlike me some sort of talent as a mechanic and fabricator.. Look forward to seeing it fixed up.

What he's giving me for it is just what I paid him to fix my Z4 so I'm £0 up.

Oil, air filters and wiper blades changed on both cars with a new oil filter on the Golf.

Lady Grumpius hit a pheasant the other night.  Her car was covered in feathers but no damage.  Went up to the car this morning and...

Lodged against the radiator.  No damage to the radiator by the looks of it.  Gloves and black bag deployed.

Did I miss something?i thought it was just a hydraulic front to rear pipe?

It still is.  It's just I thought it wise to investigate the bit of rust Dean-numbers mentioned and it all got a bit Citroen.

Gone in the bin I’m afraid. Two nights in a Ford Focus grille and being a vegetarian saw to that...

All that work they poured into the Complex, and still only 75hp. Misery, and therefore perfect shiter.

For context, VW offered a 75bhp turbo diesel in the Passat at the time.

Soon eclipsed by the 90bhp turbo intercooled XUDs of course.

Passat offside driveshaft DONE.

I thought I knew what I was doing this time after unnecessarily breaking the upper arm balljoint pinch bolt doing the same job on the nearside, but there isn't enough clearance on the offside to manoeuvre the driveshaft free without touching one of the four (!) balljoints, the only one that budged was the rearmost lower arm balljoint and that thankfully created enough clearance.

TL;DR, working on anything to do with the suspension or driveshafts is a nightmare on a B5 platform car.

With two new driveshafts there's still a vibration from the drivetrain but it's nowhere near as bad as it was with two original & knackered driveshafts. Hopefully it's MOT ready now.

I have the old TG group test of the 626 versus the Mondeo and some others, they hated the Mazda. I'll try and find it....

Oo, driveshaft work. Always fun. Would you lose alignment on a Passat by pulling the knuckle from the strut?

I did that on my Trajet a couple weeks ago when I fitted a new CV boot. Figured it wouldn't affect alignment terribly, as it's not adjustable.

Boot before

And after

post-26677-0-48701800-1548532792_thumb.jpg

The left front wheel bearing has started rumbling, so I'm looking to replace that within a couple of weeks. I'm going to replace the inner CV joint while I'm at it, as I need to pull the shaft for replacing the bearing anyway, and the knocking in the joint has got progressively louder during the last couple of years.

The alignment is still okay, it pulls a little to the right but it did that before.

I'd much rather work on a MacPherson strut...

Does the Trajet use conventional struts?

Posted

Ah, pardon my ignorance, the Passat B5 doesn't even use MacPhersons? Is it a multi-link deal then?

The Trajet does indeed use conventional struts, so quite easy to work on.

Spent most of the day sorting a rear fog light problem on a Citroen Relay (Ducato / Boxer / Sevel Sud) chassis cab. It has a Roger Dyson load bed and LED rear lamps with a junction box at the rear of the bed.

The wire to the lamp itself had corroded off and after some chasing back in the wiring harness the splices were secure. However, when the fog lamp switch was pushed battery voltage was present on the wire for 3 seconds and then it dropped to 0v, or 10v when the wire was disconnected.

A mixture of French badge and Italian electrical design had me checking all sorts of connections and fuse boxes.

After much circuit testing and head scratching it appears that the CAN system senses load and to work correctly a 12v / 21w bulb needs to be present or simulated. With a bulb in the circuit all worked well, even with the LED lamp in parallel.

A resistor pack had been wired in by Dysons but years of UK roads had fried the insides. A rewire with a new resistor pack has the lighting system worthy of an MOT again. But seriously, why do CAN and electronics have to be so unpredictable.........

I love eating game, such strong meat. You could've done the poor bird justice and roasted it or given it away... beautiful birds, small brains.

It sort of demonstrated that supercharging a dizzler wasn't any better than turbocharging.....

For reasons I have already explained, neither were exactly on the cards.  And having been driven around in the grille of a Ford Focus for at least two days does rather bring forward the possibility of it being somewhat spoiled.

don't you have to let game such as pheasant hang for a week or two before eating anyway?
