Seems 27ltr Spitfires did around 4-6mpg at 200ish mph. That makes them appear cheap to run compared to yank tanks...

The 3 wheeler Morgan i was farting around with.....now runs !!!!  Farmer found an air leak in the inlet manifold ,so  plastered instant gasket around it   ,approved Mog bodge ,   and it starts pronto, and has run for 20 minutes

The front subframe is starting to look a bit grotty now. Mind you, I said that last year, and it doesn't seem to have got any worse. I have given it a soak in wax once or twice. It's up to a remarkable 35,000 miles now.

Mine has an advisory for that too. I was going to look at it this year, but i have sorned it for the winter and will sort that and the exhaust out March time i think.

The Australian TV road safety advert showing a VW combi being wiped out by a heavy rigid or Artic cured me of ever wanting to run or jump a red light.. Putting the wrecks on display at the side of the road with a note saying how many died and what the cause was, was similarly effective 10 dead in a Nissan Urvan was the one I remember.

My word it's chilly outside!

Been out on the drive all morning. Uncovered the Mercury and checked it over before firing it up. It's in its winter lay up at the mo but I open it up and run it now and then just to keep it going and try to prevent fuel issues like I had before.

Nothing wrong with it, fired right up and ran beautifully. I left it running for half an hour or so to let the whole thing get nice and hot. Then while it was running I've filled up my dehumidifier trays with the little damp eater crystals and put three in the Mercury. Just keeps any damp and mould down.

Did the same with the Transit afterwards. Nothing wrong with that either!

T4 mot s due... quick check reveals i need 2 rear springs, rear pads , handbrake cable.. Power steering has a hard spot and wont self centre when driving.. sometimes.. Fluid is 17 years old , not a service item.. but it must be passed its best.? .might be that?

I have just been to Halfords to collect pressies for my son - he wanted tools again. This makes me smile as apart from a few forays into 'tinkering' with stuff, he was never that interested in old cars. In fact, he used to hate some of the stuff I messed with. Now, he loves all the cars that were in GTA and Forza etc (see Skyline and now the Supra Turbo thing he doesn't like) and actually LIKES fiddling with them.So, ratchet spanners with wobbly heads, a new drill, a couple of ratchets with flexible heads and a few other bits and bobs and with the good old trade card, all under a ton.

 

I was surprised at the prices in there though: ratchets are £25 each for small ones! But, I do quite like Halfords tools, seem to be good quality and if (when) they break, no arguing, just swap them. I've had a lot more trouble with Snap-on stuff and that's a LOT more expensive.

 

Anyway, spurred on by spending money (partly) and seeing Panhards latest purchase (mostly!) I went to visit the dolllop. You know, make sure she's okay, no vital fluids pouring out under her, no trace of critters making winter nests etc. Happily, she was sleeping like a baby, not so much as a gentle snore just peace and tranquility reigns in the garage. However, she is not clean! I put her away after a quick wipe dowm with a leather so I need to clean and polish her properly, but, it's FUCKING COLD OUT THERE! While my love for the old heap is seldom in doubt (It is sometimes, usually when bills arrive!) my desire to sit in front of the fire with the telly on and a dog snuggled up either side won out.

Scrapped the Golf today.  Got less for it than I might have done selling it through Gumtree, but I'd happily give up 50 quid or so to avoid having to deal with the bottom feeders one gets when one advertises sub-£200 cars on there.  Plus I got to keep the battery (put a shagged one on the car to weigh it in).  Got almost exactly enough for it to pay off my electric bill, so that was handy.

 

Speaking of electric bills, I got a snotty letter from my electricity provider today, saying that my bill was overdue (it was issued on 25th November ffs) and that if I didn't pay up pronto they might have to come and fit a prepayment meter, and then I'd lose the benefits of my current tariff and have to pay £millions more a year.  On the back of the letter they helpfully provided a projection of what my likely costs would be on a prepayment meter, and it turns out I'd actually be £106 a year better off.   Obvs I don't want a prepayment meter because they're a pain in the arse, but I will be ringing them to see if they can do something about how much I'm paying at the moment.

Thays why I am now with British gas on a smart meter for £55pcm and not EDF on a dumb meter at £85pcm... When I get bored ill look again!

Bizarre as it sounds a few of the youth seem interested in stuff like repairing cars, it’s a bit of an antidote to following the brain drain and being interested in smart watches and watching other people living a life on the television.

Try moneysavingexpert.com's Cheap Energy Club. You bang in how much gas and leccy you used in the last year (this will be on one of your bills somewhere), and it emails you when you can make a saving by switching. Then you just hit the price comparison websites and switch to the least expensive. I've done two switches using this tool now.
