Its nice of James to leave his mobile number in the ad.

Not that anyone would tell him

"I would not hesitate to drive it around the country and back... did actually get.

To be fair he has got good feedback, I'd have bought a car from him.

Mind you my Rickman did the same after 100 miles on the way home so I'm no judge.

How far did Dave drive it?

Posted

A mere 15 hours after first calling the rac I have reached the _numbers northern base. IE my sisters house. The trip was done in 3 relays on different trucks to overcome driving hours restrictions.

Could I have got somewhere in England to fix it? Probably. Could I afford that? Probably not.

Could someone kind shiters have helped out? Possibly. Do I have the time to strip it and do repairs at someones house or field? Probably not. The mechanical side is pretty simple but it may well need skimmed and pressure checked which doesn't happen overnight. With it up here i have time, even if that means leaving it for a few months and flying back to France to get back to work and earn some pennies.

Did the guy misdescribe it? Yeah probably, but I could have been more thorough when I checked it over. The test drive was too short.

Lies on his part and complacency on my part. I have done similar collections dozens of times over the years and this is the first real failure. Lessons have been learned.

FOADs randomly did the same on his collection mission.

Dave you have an excellent attitude, life is too short to be bitter

Lessons are good to learn. I always check wheel bolts on new cars now...

Fugging LOL! Regular readers may know I already have a Mazda like this one which I also bought in UK. The day after I bought it the front left wheel came off and smashed the front of some poor sods van. Turned out that all nuts were only finger tight and I swore to always check them on new purchases.

Forgot to check this one!

I'd contact the guy and see if he would be willing to give some money back.

As he's got 100% feedback he might be willing to help out.

If not just post the link to page 1 of this thread as feedback :)

Jings what a nightmare! Glad you made it to Aberdeen eventually.

Is the Mazda's head good? Presumably it's the same engine.

It took my ranger over 150 miles of motorway driving with the coolant pressurising out of the expansion tank for the temp gauge to move north. It was bang on in the middle for most of the journey.

I'd certainly be getting in touch with the vendor, I sold a car a few years ago and it shat it's crank bearings half an hour later, straight refund to the buyer who was understandably pissed off but at the same time shocked that I had no problem sorting it, I'd expect a few quid towards repairs at the least

Yes I'm tempted to message the guy, but not up to me.

I'd refund some if it was me selling.

You would have expected it to be removed by now.

If someone presses BIN they won't get the truck, not that they would want it if they knew.

It's showing as 'popular' now. Must be us lot.

Should read unpopular.

The fact it failed so soon after purchase is a bit of a coincidence - i'd be adking for a refund as it's not fit for purpose.

This sucks wang but you got some class calendar standard photos and a great story out of the ordeal. Little cumfart I know, but great thread.

FFS it's some old shite - if we are expecting fit for purpose the majority of us better stop selling cars on here

if only someone had a ranger that was so rotten its about fit for the bridge but still has a serviceable donk

Bad luck Dave, at least you can put what you saved on fuel towards a head gasket set!

As others have pointed out it makes a bit of a tale to tell, although by putting it on this forum you've already exhausted it, nobody else will want to hear!

I hope you can get it sorted reasonably economically.

What he saved on fuel?

As I understand it he has to drive to France after he mends it.

With maybe a couple of flights thrown in.

I'm a bit sketchy on the exact logistics but it was a maybe misguided attempt at the 'saving fuel on a long distance collection by breaking down and subsequently being recovered' gag.

I am of course gutted for Dave that he's ended up in this situation!

Posted

Damn, that's a piece of rotten luck. I am all too familiar with the sending a van instead of a flatbed/arriving home in the early hours scenario though, happened to me with the AA. Luckily I wasn't stranded on a motorway at the time

Well done for keeping your sense of humour about it

Fuel saving, ehh ?, he was going south as it went south.  He'd gone west to pick it up and ended up going North.  It's all over is that trip to Dover, for the timebeing
