How can Doovla lose a registration?

DVLA appear to have totally lost a registration - now denying it exists, and requiring me to apply for a new one.

Tiresome, when every other site I try finds the car, exactly as is.

In brief, I bought a cheap spare Samara from NI ( is the clue there?) and because it's better than expected, I've decided to resurrect. It's been a simple job, and is about ready to MOT, as although still liooking shiny, it's solid and a sensible runner.

But my tame tester can't find it on the system, and would have to MOT it on the Vin- something I'd prefer not to do as it can cause tax issues later.nAnyway, I can't tax it!

So I sent off to Swansea, £25 attached which was all returned to me - stating I'd either got the VIN wrong or needed to reapply.

I checked, I hadn't, so attached a photo of the VIN plate, the stamped shock tower, the original bill of sale, the second bill of sale, the dealer original paperwork and sent it all back.

4 weeks later I get it all back with the exact same print off letter. Now I'm peeved.

I can find it on any breaker, shop or comparative system. It's clear its DVLA registered, with original plates and paperwork.

Have I really got to go through the pain/ cost of re-registering a shonker? Or can someone suggest an alternate route, past these unhelpful gatekeepers.

Here it is as purchased

Aye, you'll have to go through them - my Avenger had to get re-registered over there when it was "exported".

I wonder if it's just being fed into a machine, that would explain why it came back with the same letter the second time. Document goes in, plate doesn't exist and thus everything goes back. Have you tried phoning them and speaking to a human?

Just drive it, untaxed, ignoring red lights, speed cameras and anpr cameras, just like many east Europeans around here. :)

Good ideas chaps.

I thought the systems had been ' integrated' but I guess that cars off road some time didn't get included.

I'll bell them early next.

Yup, looks awful but I think it's just been eastern by aged pigeon shit.

It's pretty solid underneath, and it seems to run ok. Haven't driven it anywhere, can you imagine the glee at Swansea as they work out their ' fine'?

Cleaned up ok, but haven't yet decided what to do with it. But of time in the road will help.

The cunning plan of shutting all the regional doovla orifices so you can no longer speak face to face with an actual person who's seen a car and has some grasp of what they're paid to do has definitely made all this so much easier and straightforward.*

Aye they've closed all the offices over here (NI) so you'll have to go through Swansea I'm afraid. I'd imagine there's some paper record of the car festering in a big warehouse over here somewhere, and no DVLA internal procedure for checking

It's a pain having to register it again but you should end up with a (different) age related plate

DVLA NI and DVLA here don't seem to talk to each other, I had the same with a Landrover I sold to NI, filled all the logbook in sent it off then got it returned as it had to be exported...

Technically the DVLA in NI doesn't exist anymore, it's all centralised.

However the reality seems to be a wee bit different and overall the service is useless unless you want to do something simple like change of ownership on an existing registered vehicle

A few months ago the DVLA sent me a nice letter thanking me for telling them I no longer owned my Seicento and a cheque for the tax refund. Thing was, and still is, the beast is parked on the drive. Rang 0300 790 6802 and it took some sorting. They eventually admitted their mistake but it was over a week of calls before they re-taxed it.

It's rude not too, you can always pay them back when they've worked it out.

The two comuter systems (Coleraine and Swansea) are totally different, and when the two offices joined, the NI registered cars on sorn or pre-sorn were lost. One person in Swansea has access to the NI computer (I shit you not) and it's a disaster to resolve. Most of my collection dropped off the system during the change over.

No I didn't cash the cheque, basically because some years ago the insurance company sent me two cheques for the same amount after we were burgled and I cashed them both ! I still worry that one day some bean counter will realise and want a lot of money back, it payed for a nice holiday though.......

Not scrapped or written off. Just there, large as life!

Sounds crazy that the registration "pulls" correctly on third party databases yet a purge within DVLA has apparently erased the original entry, surely there is provision to reactivate the original mark if presented with credible evidence? Is there a Lada Club could help?

My bad, but the reg is correct on the formal paperwork - just a slip here.

I'll get on to NI Monday- see if I can get some sense there.

Bureaucracy eh!

It's a complete joke all UK v5's (including ni) are printed in Swansea... all v5's! Yet the transition lost most NI reg vehicles. With v5's issued by Swansea! Rant over...

The BBC Micro in Wales doesn't speak to the Commodore 64 in Ireland very well.

One of the last users of the Tatung Einstein machines, all connected together via Ethernet and a Commodore Pet.

To keep up corporate appearances they have been rebuilt into old 286 desktop cases and have a special program causing them to lock solid displaying only a blue screen and some meaningless white code to prevent windows users getting jealous.
