Late registration madness

That's another one I've just remembered, there used to be a Mk2 RS2000 on an X plate in Leven.

There's an X plate RS2000 V5 and Vin tag listed on Ebay every few months.

I wonder if it's from the same car, there can't be too many of them. I think this one was RAO...X

I've just seen a sheddy Mercedes W124 on a 99 'T' plate, it looked like a proper ringer.

A batch of Indian-built W124s were bought in to this country by Trade Sales car supermarket in Slough in '98-'99, for some reason, either 250 diesel or 220 petrol IIRC, at a much cheaper price than the equivalent W210 (something like 10k cheaper!).

I've seen them locally on R and S plates. Most are now rusty due to poorer build than the German-assembled models. All the ones I've seen have had plastic hubcaps and were black.

Funnily enough I saw an S-prefix W124 coupe a couple of weeks ago which must have been a re-reg (perhaps a secondhand personal import) as the Indian W124s were all four-door saloons.

I wonder if that Minor is the "famous" one built from NOS parts by a Swindon BL dealer at the request of a customer? It was covered in Autocar and Motor at the time - IIRC it cost something like £3,600, which would have easily bought a P6...

I don't think it is. This is a pretty crappy one with a not quite right colour dodgy respray. I'd be prepared to bet it's an ex-army one TBH, they had quite a few Travellers - I've seen an R-reg one too I'm pretty sure.

I'd definitely fit a drawstring in the Moggy to raise, lower and adjust the angle of the venetian blind grille.

Sorry, caught in the moment.

Haha, although in Autoshite style, one of the slats needs to be kinked, and it should pull up one side further than the other...

There was a V reg Maestro Van I used to see round my area. I dont think any vans were kits so probably just a very late reg

Vans quite often get replaced by newer models quite long after the car version, hence 51-plate Escort vans being fairly commonplace. I'm sure they kept building Maestro vans many years after mainstream car production ended.

It's mostly because commercial customers don't care so much, although I guess it's a nice way to get rid of surplus interior and front end parts too.

The last Peugeot 305 van we registered new was a J plate,in 1991. IIRC it was sourced from southern Ireland. There were a couple more locally and quite a few H plates too. Production finished June 1990.

The Royal Mail had a batch of Avenger estates that were registered well after production ended

JSC 645X

KSF 5X

PSF 739Y

A493 WSD

They were based locally to me and I remember them well, wish I'd tried to do something about getting the A plate, that must've been unique! I bet none exist now, sadly. :(

Never heard about those Indian W124s before, thanks. I've noticed a few late plate W124s on eBay, but just thought they were flukes.

It was a 220 petrol, I wondered why it looked so sheddy - worse than any 20 year old W124 I've seen.

This Omega’s pretty late isn’t it?

http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/2004-VAUXHALL-OME ... 0541048434

It's late, indeed. The latest Omega I've ever saw was at our local Vauxhall dealer. Someone had bought a 53 plate one (DE53 something...). I believe it was the last one they had in stock and had been sitting in the compound for about four months. I know a couple of employee’s ended up with the few that were left, effectively abandoned dotted around in the odd compound which were also registered as 53 plates. I’ve seen the odd one around.

It's not the first instance the police seem to source late plates. As I said, our local force had three 'T' plate mk3 Astra's which was an odd sight and only the other week I did spot a Glacier White 53 plate original, facelifted Vectra estate on eBay - registered over a year after the model had been discontinued.

I've love to see those very late plate W124's...!

Various police forces stockpiled MV6 Omegas - I've seen (still just about serving!) TVP jobs on 54 plates. I believe that certain forces got the option of a manual box with the 3.2 engine, which Joe Public couldn't get.

Oh, and I've seen an M-plate Mk2 Golf GTI (in the obligatory Oak Green metallic) hereabouts.

This was one which struck me as pretty odd...

... though I remember a couple of P-reg Cavaliers (black P-reg SRi on ebay just now, too!). Oddest I saw was a red, X-reg oval-grilled Escort 1.4. X665 UKS rings a bell, but I didn't have my phone on me at the time to grab a quick pic.

On another note, Gatwick Handling back in the day took a number of batches of VW Golfs which were never road registered. I've driven three, two Mk3 1.9D vans which were down on the airport bumph built in '92, and we still have a 1.6TD Mk2 van with 35k on the clock... often wondered what plate it would get if I were to buy it...

Pretty sure that is the correct colour, our Traveller is the same shade - Teal Blue I think, not Trafalgar which is what I think you were thinking of.

Almost certainly ex army/RAF, not the one built from unused parts (although that was N reg too)

Interesting thread this.

Ive seen a G reg mk2 fiesta van. Looked very rough though and ive not seen it for a while now so may have been scrapped.

And on the subject of Escorts, the company I work for still run some 52 and 03 plate Escort vans. They are just about up for re-newal now though so are quickly going.

I know there are quite a few C reg mk2 Granadas about but mine was made in November 84 and not registered until October 85! What was it doing for 11 months?

Apparently theres an unregistered 280 Capri out there, I think a member on here got pictures of it the other week? Im sure Ive seen a 03 plate Escort Van round here, all of them are looking pretty rough now. There is also a 1991 registered MKIV bodied Orion local as well, and its a diesel.

Good point Warren. I recall a thread about a very late registered Mk3 Cavalier that had been spotted (on another forum) and people clambering with excitement over it. I did suggest it was bent, got shot down in flames for it and then it turned out it was ringed and was actually pictured just before being used in a crime!

Slightly OT but I had a Sierra Estate that was always being stopped because the police didn't think it looked right but they didn't know why. It had been in a bump and the only cheap front end I could get was off a Sapphire so it was different but not too different.

Yes indeed...and if you notice they all sat very high off the ground due to Indian spec suspension for going over their potholed roads.!!

Available in Silver, Navy blue or Black if I recall.
