Shite in your town, in ye olden times.

Cheltenham, mid ‘70s. I moved there in ‘79, kicked the tyres of an Ro80 in this same showroom, about ‘83. It was £750 and wouldn’t start, which was a shame as it was a lovely metallic blue and and had perfect alloys. ( I’d just sold a good-running but rotten brown Ro80 (steel wheels) for £450). Shortly afterwards  l put a deposit on a “repaired” Audi 100 Coupe, then decided I was being dum to buy such a dodgy motor and walked out on the deal. One of my better decisions! It was the same colour as the one in this picture, so very possibly the same car.C9BCDC08-DDB7-40A5-8EAC-95BF783CDAA3.thumb.png.c77af9fcc377ca6cbdc0a11dccbd273c.png

Of course, you're right - unless it's a 1500.

Monmouth - where I took my car test.
Lovely wide street is now crammed with shit street furniture and mods to make it “more attractive to visitors”
At the bottom of the street on the right was a Mercedes service garage and about half-way down on the left was a little garage where I sidn’t buy an Alfa 164 or a 4wd Mitsubishi Colt. It’s now an M+S food place.AD4E348D-66FC-48F1-BB8F-0921579074F2.thumb.jpeg.1e7c5a9e0f4bcc32d7127ce58a6bb906.jpeg

Been hoping for ages someone on the internet would post a picture of this place...

'George St Motor Exchange' was basically a sort of glorified cave, mostly full of ropey ADO16s he'd had from the auctions. He always looked quite old (to us youngsters at the time) but he couldn't have lived a long life as whenever he started one of his cars up it'd smoke the place out.

My grandad gave me a stack of 35mm slides to scan in and in the mix were a few snaps of Coventry's car dealerships during 1979...

Burtons garage in Grimsby.

A main Fiat botherer for many years, and also held the subaru dealership when it was pickups and sensible estates.

They lost the Fiat franchise when Dixons took over Grimsby20230401_141011.jpg.31fd6f36962392646aebd2bd18cd46cc.jpg

Late 1990's if I remember correctly, the petrol pumps had gone, but the main showroom and new sales hadn't changed much from the photo.

I tried to find some more info on when Burton's went to the wall. And found some later photos of the forecourt 20230402_102156.jpg.98cad1a36dfae96b9ed546d97804374c.jpgCan't remember who bought the garage or it burnt down, as that happens a lot in this town. Was a car park for a while.

Below is flattened. It's now a hotel on that site

Woolworths, tavistock. Assorted shite. The building was demolished in  2020

image.thumb.jpeg.1aa367ad7afeb98cfe5f88b1378b2167.jpeg

Prior to its construction the site had been a garage selling cars and petrol, it closed in the 1950s…..

Dundee again. First shot is a posh area somewhere around Roseangle. The others are on the site of Wellgate Street that had just been cleared for the Wellgate shopping centre that in now largely empty except for the odd Junkie and the library.
