Cavcraft 2017: Another day, ANOTHER Rover!

ST collected today and had it delivered to the field of dreams

At work, bored, checking eBay on 'phone. Half-arsedly read advert, struggle to see half-arsed pictures properly, put half-arsed offer in (with covering note) then wait. Not many minutes later, we're on:

It's only a flipping 1.1! Doesn't seem to have a sunroof, stereo looks like the original one, only 3 doors but let down by metallic paint. I'm sad enough to want a completely mingebag version with no options at all, hopefully this isn't far off that.

Not collected it yet, most probs over this bank holiday weekend, and the car is not very far away.

Yup hard to believe now. But I guess a 1.1 K series uses the same mounts as the bigger variants so not a massive amount of engineering required by the factory, hence no real cost adding it as an option.

 

The 1.1 k series is a lot hardier and less prone to OMGHGF. Its a SOHC lump in spi and mpi flavours, dunno what these were graced with?

They're not very big cars and the 211 weighs less than a ton - similar performance to a Fiesta 1.3 or Corsa 1.2 of the era.

I had a wirk mate who had one of these 1.1s as his first car when they were still fairly recent, would have been about 2001. He put big Fox alloys on it before trading it in for a Saxo VTR, which he had endless electrical problems with.

the 1.1 is aparently a much sweeter lump than the 1.4

Aye. Rovers mistake was to pitch the R3 200 against the Astra and Escort when it should have been up against the Fiesta and Corsa price wise. It was originally destined to wear a Rover 100 badge.

If it's driveable, I'll happily deilver to you aswell as Bridgnorth is only about 15 miles up the road from me.

My understanding (gained from the internet - so possibly wrong) is that ALL K series have the same block so that a 1.1 SOHC can be replaced by a 1.8 VVTi without "much" of a problem.

3dr Rover shell without a sunroof surely worth a bit to motorsport types? Find a barn, stash it away for a few years, wheel out, sell for ££££s.

I reckon your Rover Motorsport crowd might be a small group so if more than a couple of other folk have the same idea you've got a saturated market....

Can I put a single cam head on a 1.8 then? (For authentic 1965 vehicle performance simulation)

Looks like a pretty good buy to me. R3s are criminally underrated right now imho. I'd love to own one at some point.

Well today was double collection day.

 

Thankfully, we set off pretty handy (about 08.30, I think) to cross the border and head to Colwyn Bay. The A55 was quite busy, but not as busy as it got later when it was the normal bank holiday stupidity. Anyhow, the Clio was ok, the seller said his friend who had owned the car mentioned the fuel gauge not working but they'd put half a tank's worth in. I topped it to be on the safe side to get me home. Upon return my lad lifted the back seat up, wiggled the sender unit and it came back to life revealing half a tank as promised! I think the brakes need something, not much travel on the pedal but something didn't seem 100%, though it did stop, of course.

 

Got home, ten minute tea break, then off to get the Rover. I checked it over (despite the laughably cheap price) and there wasn't a huge amount of water in it. Vendor topped it up from a bottle in the boot (always a bit sus imho) but nothing seemed amiss, so I drove it home. No overheating or smoking and was actually quite nice to drive, felt quite 'solid' on the road and whilst obviously no ball of fire, in top gear it was no real bother on the bypass. Seems quite in-messed with, original stereo at a guess which is pleasing. Body a bit rough, though appears to be more surface rust (fingers crossed) than actual rot.

That's the point at which all of BL/Rover's good work went down the shitter. The R8 was a great car, offering a vastly superior product to shit like the Escort, Astra III and Golf III and for less money - a sound business model that worked. The bubble thing and that pretentious 400 variant was BMW taking the piss and trying to convince us that anything Longbridge/Cowley made was 'prestige'. Rover 400 or a bigger, better made, better handling and riding Mondeo? Righto.

 

No lads, it ain't.  And it backfired spectacularly.

I like the look of the bubbles. They seem sort of weirdly 'futuristic in the 1980's' like a prototype that actually came to life. This is 8V, the lad reckoned, had been his granddad's for years and he retired from driving at 83 or something.

That's the best colour of R3 and a nice early one still feels quality. My braking my facelift if you need and parts.
