Stunning day in Serbia again. 120km covered, taking the car to over 55,000kms. One CV joint was a bit clattery on a hairpin this morning, but otherwise, no problems to report. Just stopped at a cafe for lunch.

Good progress. Are you actually heading toward Belgrade even though the plan is to get into Bosnia today?

At one point, after you get home, you have to test them while going in reverse. If the clatter is gone, you can just change the left to the right and the right to the left. Problem solved, you'll have clatter just in reverse. Otherwise, you can drive it around for tens of thousands of kilometers with that noise, as long as you don't floor it on bends (if the rubber keeping the grease on is not ruptured).

The good* news is that your plate doesn't register on DVLA, so there's no danger of you getting done for plate cloning when you get back here!

Marvellous, marvellous thread - just up to speed now after the weekend's activities!

Keep going chaps, this is the stuff dreams are made of!

Well, my dreams, anyway...

Much more verbose updates than expected. I was expecting something along the lines of;

There's still time and opportunity...

The traffic on AS must have quadrupled since the start of your adventure. Im glued, clicking numerous times in the day looking for updates. Ive just looked at a car to buy in Norfolk and thought 'no, too far' how pathetic of me. Have a great journey guys, inspiration to us all. Now do i but that car in Norfolk ??

We sailed past Belgrade today, and made it to Bosnia. In the first town, the engine conked out. When fuel is bubbling in the filter, you know things are too hot.

So we decided to push on, and discovered that the Police can be very expensive...

Today was always going to be a downhill slide from yesterday. This is still going some!

Don't understand what you are doing in Bosnia? Shouldn't you be on the A3, thru Croatia, to Zagreb?

Or are you sightseeing/ hunting a small motorbike for the back/ 2nd car to bring back?

Funs..

Check the cooling and alternator belt for slippage and tension. You should be able to push it down between the alternator and the cooling pump, but no more than about 7-8 millimeters.

One of the codes is BK13000 , it's a V belt, 1218 mm long if I remember correctly.

EDIT also check the airfilter, the part towards the fron of teh car: is it blocked? If so, it draws air from closer to the exhaust manifold, on the winter setting. There's a tab with a spring on it, it has two positions.

Cooling is ok. Problem is heat getting into everything else if we are stationary for any length of time. May need to try and duct cool air towards the fuel pump. Otherwise, it's running fine albeit a little more tappety by the end of a long day. Should have brought our feeler gauges..

I was wondering about rerouting the fuel line to put the fuel filter out front in the cold air

Have some photos from last night

We didn't see any BXs till we reached Serbia. We are now up to 4

Is it a single feed fuel line to the carb, or does it have a return? I'm guessing a single feed, which is the main issue here. At idle, when you're stationary, theres no airflow and barely any fuel flow, so it gets very hot.

If you were to fit a return, it would greatly increase fuel flow, and hence it would not have time to get hot. The fuel tank will get fractionally warmer, but your hot running issues would be gone.

Bit of a task to fit en-route though...

This is why I keep entering roffles! A train trip to somewhere I've never been before followed by a drive home in a car I've never driven before would be a fun day (or weekend) out, even if I just scrapped the car as soon as I got back.

The scenery is still cracking but mood is down a bit after police tug. I did contemplate offering them a replacement headlight bulb for their Polo but Ian considered it would have been unwise. It is possible that there are more mk2 Golf's in the former Yugoslavia than VW ever made they are everywhere so any in spots are accidental.

Sorry for small update. Bosnian internet is slow and data is hideously expensive

According to the experience of citizens who paid at least one bribe in the 12 months prior to the survey, the public officials who receive most kickbacks in Bosnia and Herzegovina are doctors (54% of citizens with recent corruption experience give bribes to doctors), closely followed by police officers (52%), nurses (31%) and municipal officers (24%)

Citizens of Bosnia and Herzegovina rank corruption as the fourth most important problem facing their country, after unemployment, the performance of the Government and poverty or low standard of living.

Was your experience with foriegn fuzz less than optimal?

If it was, it might have been down to not having a vital piece a paper* slipped into the back page of the passport....

I got pulled in Bosnia this morning. Bastards made me empty my wallet. Threatened to impound my bike and incarcerate me - I assume they almost have a script for foreign registered vehicles.

Quite.

And that's why the EU is what it is. It's a bit like Royston Vasey: You'll never leave

Is your fuel filter in it's proper place, between the fuel line coming from the tank and the fuel pump, or it's where most Romanians fitted a secondary one, between the pump and carb? The fuel hose should bee thick enough not to allow heat to transfer to petrol, and if it's between the engine block and the left inner wing (where it should be if fitted in it's proper place, at about 4 inches from the engine block) it wouldn't have heat issues. Also, the old type was a glass body (decanter style, lines coming in the upper part and gunk staying on the bottom of the glass) with a paper cartridge inside. Long gone too, I'm afraid.

The fuel return line is directly from the pump.
