The usual problem with internet tyres....squashed and strapped together for transport so they are too narrow to seat nicely in the wheel well, so a normal compressor wont inflate them as it cant get enough air in fast enough. I did the usual of pushing and shoving and bouncing and messing with ratchet straps and stuff, then though fuck it.....

Couldnt find a proper exhaust sleeve or suitable bit of thinwall, so made an adaptor out of scaffolding pipe as I had some lying and its just about the right inner diameter. This joint will probably outlast the rest of the exhaust by factor of ten.

Welding galvanized steel creates some wicked toxic smoke, which made some pretty effects in the sunlight coming in through the wall.

Oh... My... God, a hero in the making, not only are you doing sterling work on one of the finest cars known to man, you also like a bit of low end pyromania and messing with toxic fumes. Good effort!

I love going in Le Halfords. Last time I wanted my trailer wheels balanced. 'Oh no, we don't balance trailer wheels, only car wheels' etc

I went to my local Halfords for some Disco 1 brake shoes on Sunday. Apparently they no longer carry brake shoes in stock...!

Any brake shoes at all? Lots of cars still have rear drum brakes.

That's a cracking trick with the tyres. My friendly mobile tyre chap had the same problem when he did my BMW - crap compressor and rigid sidewalls on the low profile runflats. He ended up going back to base for a better compressor but if we'd thought of it we could have made EXPLOSION instead.

What's in the aerosol? EasyStart, or would that be overdoing it?

Did I say shoes? Sorry, I meant pads... I've been doing a lot of work on my Series 2a recently & that has shoes.

Basically, this store doesn't carry brake linings of any sort in stock anymore. They do have some old stock but apparently they get all their stuff delivered as required from Euro Car Parts now...!

Regarding the tide mark, Rover Grey (as used on their tide marked later cars) is a very good match for the original.

Loving the car, wish I could find the photo of the italian one with the same stripe - it was my favourite car of the trip last year.

Keep up the great work.

It ran fine before, so no reason to assume its suddenly going to have problems due to this clip which may well have been in the sump for decades.

My Renault 10 ran for years with half a pushrod in the sump.

That sounds like a Viz Top Tip for saving money on oil, a bit like saving water by putting a brick in your cistern in the loo.

Yeah, its easystart. Brake cleaner can work if it sprays as a mist rather than a stream, but easystart never fails.

KEEP YOUR FINGERS AWAY FROM THE RIM. The thought of getting a finger trapped between tyre bead and rim makes me shiver. On the last one in the video it appeared to have not worked but there was a small flame left on the rim that was enough to ignite the main stuff inside the tyre when I moved it.

When I worked there we stocked loads of stuff...pads, shoes, clutches, suspension parts, bearings, gaskets, water pumps, timing belts..... but as the range of cars on the road grew the stores couldnt justify giving over so much floor space to parts, so it was all phased out. I left then (early 2000's) and now pretty much everything is delivered within an hour or so from the local factors.

Which is shit because it was nice to be able to rummage though stuff on the shelves to find something that you could make fit for an obscure application....now its just "computer says no." and the shelf space is given over to tents and camping stoves and pink fluffy steering wheel covers and shit like that.

Its one of those businesses that has been hit hard by internet sales and less people doing their own maintenance, coupled with high costs in retail locations. I am surprised they are still going to be honest. Literally everything they have can be bought cheaper in ECP or other factors, or a lot cheaper online. Even the bikes are expensive for the quality. Their only advantage is the convenience of being open 7 days a week till 7 pm, but then since they dont stock stuff anymore, once the local factors shuts for the evening, Halfords is no use for parts either.

Glad to see you are back... Thought you were a gonner after the last explosive tyre fitment! Camera knocked over and everything went black! 😬

Loving this project dave90210.

We have a tyre machine at work and I really struggled with a Discovery wheel before Christmas, the tyre just would not 'pop'. I'm not brave enough to use the easystart method though!!!

That's the only reason I went there tbh, Miss F needed the Disco for work the next day so I couldn't order the pads online.

Luckily the old school motor factors nearby had a set of good branded pads in, and they were as cheap as online. Win!

Or even your foreskin ! When carrying out naked tyre changing

Erk! Brake cleaner can turn into phosgene gas when burned (effects ranging from breathing difficulties through permanent lung damage to, er, death)

Well, it ran eventually.

Preliminary prognosis postulated that the petrol pump wasnt pumping petrol, so I pulled it off and blew through it with the compressor while holding it in the vise and pumping the cam lobe with a pair of pliers. It blew out a load of dirt then started pumping fine so back on it went and she fired right up.

I got the engine bay pretty much finished with he loom routed and clipped properly, the bulkhead plastic in place, fuse box fixed down, screenwas tank in (had to open up and reseal on of the pumps as it was leaking) and filled it with oil and coolant.

The hail damage on the bonnet is worse than I remembered. Will definately need to change it in the future.

Got the last bits of interior in.

Then set about the bootlid. As standard on this special edition the top half is satin black and the rest white. The satin was a mess and has been redone with a brush so I sanded that down and spray painted it. I am currently making an arse of spraying the white section, which had a few rust blebs to sort out. Paint reactions all over the place so I will let it harden tonight and sand down tomorrow for another try.

Nice work!

Think you showed remarkable patience when it wouldn't start initially. I'd probably have been retrieving my tools from various corners of the garage for the next hour ;)

Fantastic progress.

Not what I expected though as you don't look much like your avatar!

Nice work, you're flying with this, we'll all be expecting it back on the road by Monday. You also appear to be a master of innuendo too...
