Not my pictures, but this Land Rover has been sat on the A30 since it caught fire 12 days ago.

Apparently this Mk3 Cortina has been in the river for over 40 years, but only becomes visible during dry periods when the water level falls.

With current levels of Ford Tax, I'm amazed someone hasn't fished it out before now to list on eBay.

image.png.abc0c6a8e7366a196464c41d1162aa94.png

There used to be a Mk1 Fiesta further downstream that was visible from the train, but that was removed during a whole heap of riverbank regeneration around 2010.

That's ace, it's like something out of a horror flick!

There's some proper good shite hiding in Devon, unfortunately most of it I can't really stop and pap. These are near my accommodation in Totnes this week

‘1972 Ford Cortina 1600, needs welding, historical interest as once owned by Martin McGuinness/Ian Paisley/Gusty Spence/Joe Cahill/Terence O’Neill*

Being cynical, the easiest way to get that removed would be to claim body parts have been seen inside it (apologies if this is in bad taste, I know that unknown graves and unresolved historic murders are a very major thing for NI).

Was walking to the shop this morning when this caught my eye:

Looks like a nice Astra, and at the risk of sounding like a Mike Modder type, it would look nice on 19" Vauxhall Snowflake rims.

I saw a similar Astra (Seen earlier in this thread), but a 5 door one with full leathers, sadly, it was parked on a dodgy high-rise estate near Dudley and all the windows had been smashed in.

The note on it is from the local council stating that it has been reported as abandoned and that they know about it. There is no deadline as such to get it removed, this might come later.

The mad thing is, a few years ago, I used to store my off-the-road Mk2 Sterling here, never had any issues with it though.

^ From memory (it was some years ago I wrote that series of books about old filling stations like this), that’s in Suffolk somewhere and had the wheel of an old US bomber kicking about. Might be wrong.

More pressure for space and also DVLA stepping up enforcement of SORN/insurance/tax/MoT connected "possible infraction determined by computer" like the fines being sent for off-road cars (was it SORN + insured? Or tax + not insured that was triggering it? I forget).

Skopelos, Greece.  Permanently rained on by sea spray.  Doesn’t move judging by the rust stains on the ground.

On the theme of the Lurgan Cortina, here’s a lost Astra in a Scottish river. You have to climb over a Lada Riva and SD3 Rover to see it, and I think there’s an Orion further upstream.

Totnes, Devon. Apparently once there was a red and a yellow fuel station owned by the same company, now there's just Blue Post. The building is a garage that was in use repairing cars until fairly recently, along with a tiny cafe and a campsite behind - just the fuel station is open now

Not in an easy spot for pics, but as well as various moderns and several phone boxes, there's what I judge to be a late 60s Beetle under piles of junk too

Well, apparently the Cortina was pulled out over the weekend.

Lagan River: Removal of abandoned car in river begins - BBC News

Or rather, they ripped the roof off and couldn't get the rest out.

Given that the floorpan was buried in several tonnes of silt, and it's apparently been in the water for 53 years, I'm not really sure what other outcome was anticipated.

I've normally a lot of time for the Community Rescue Service, but I do think this was a waste of volunteer time and charity funding, and probably did more damage to the riverbank and nearby wildlife habitats than just leaving the damn thing alone to dissolve over time. The car's underwater and invisible for most of the year anyway, and only appears during summer drought conditions when the river level drops.

I'm pretty certain that any environmental pollution would have been released long, long ago as the fuel tank, brake pipes, radiator and oil filter rotted out and the fluids were dispersed into the watercourse. Far from ideal of course, but any spillage likely occurred decades ago. I can't imagine it's an active pollutant site any more, something Rivers Agency seemed to agree with.

It might have been nice if it had been left to degrade intact, but now there's a load of sharp rusty metal sticking up from the riverbed which is possibly more hazardous. Still, a councillor has something to put on their website so I suppose that's the main thing.

If the stated timescale is correct, then the Mk3 must have been nearly new when it went into the river in 1973 - and the seats and dashboard do indicate a pre-facelift model. Chrome trim around the doorframes but no vinyl roof suggests an XL model, perhaps?

The seats are L or base model, an XL was a lot better spec.  with much nicer seats. Shame to mess about with it as you say there was nothing to gain by dragging it out now. A local landmark now ruined 😠

But think of the publicity & back slapping this has created.
