At one point back in the mid 2000s I used a Carlton 1.8i saloon as my tow car.  That was rather sedate with a laden Brian James car transporter hanging off the back.

Although that sounds slightly miserable as a tow rig, it was probably very capable if treated sensibly. At the threat of de railing the thread, on the subject of tow cars, I once towed a Citroen gsa to Glasgow with a ford Orion 1.4 ghia on one of those horribly heavy ‘homemade from a twin axle caravan’ (not by me)trailers that never quite brake straight. Stupid but fun filled days

Disappointing today on the car front.

Today was part two of the reassembly of the Mitsubishi Sigma. The day came to a stop when we found the inlet manifold gasket supplied in the Head gasket set was wong. We had already made a discover that there is a rust hole in one of the rocker covers that is going to require JB Weld. Then it rained.

The hunt is on for a gasket. I have found one in Australia but would like the car back on the road sooner and without paying £35 + tax for a gasket.

Did you try and embarrass your children with this car so they would not come with you and eat expensive food!

Well, as this has heating , surprisingly refined and suspension that doesn’t resemble scaffolding poles, they were happy!

Although less impressed with the headlining…….. want me to attempt to improve with spray glue ?

If you are going to use spray glue use high temp stuff used for camper van builds rather than screwfix type stuff..

Van de Pommes was out and about today, taking the apple mill, cider press and heritage fruit display to an Apple Day in the Chilterns.

It was a small venue, but a very nice day out. 

We finished up at a nice pub for tea.

Trouble is I suspect the foam will disintegrate when you spray glue on it.

Today was day one of the Carlton 1.8i Saloon revival. The initiative comes from @ianbmw who said I was doing it a disservice letting it stand unloved in the field. I agree when there is a volunteer and his young assistance offering to save it and all I have to do is leave a warm house and TV!

Ian put the distributor cap back and a temp sensor and it started up remarkably easily. Then ran rough as before. It also smoked when it got warm, it seems to be overfilled with oil more than 1 ltr that may explain the smoke.

It drove down the field and received a much needed wash for its trouble. I know no amount of washing is going to fix those doors!

There was an “I told you so moment” when Ian found the original wheel trims in the boot that I had denied having.

Much amusement was had by the fact the headlight wipers work perfectly.

Ian has taken the broken door handle home to repair it.

My enthusiasm was punished this evening. The estate must of overheard me telling @Six-cylinder I was anticipating a return to keeper on Thursday.

 

got home fine, went to move the estate and she no go go  . The intermittent fuel pump is now no longer intermittent.

So a new fuel pump and filter and we will be cooking with E10 again……it will probably start tomorrow!

Quite a nice result on the 1.8, certainly be nice to get it to a position where it could be MOT rather than wondering what’s wrong with it.

Then onto the Royale! Then yeee shall be k own as the many of many operational Vauxhalls!

Do they use an in tank pump or external like the Manta GTE?

Estates and early Carlton’s saloons are external, thankfully! I may go liberate the Monza pump to keep the Carlton moving until a new one arrives

FSE Glencoe are in my home town, see if they list a compatible pump.

Now you have found the proper wheel trims for the Carlton saloon you might as well get it back on the road!

I assume it’s only the passenger side doors that are damaged? The rest of the bodywork looks not bad…

Did @Andyrew own this car at one point?

I have never valued the Calton 1.8i manual saloon as a car I want to keep. If it was a Lotus, GSi, 24v Diamond Estate or even a 2.6 CDX Auto Saloon it would be different. However Mrs6C has spoken and @ianbmw is in agreement with her so it is headed back to the road for another £345 road tax bill.

There are other minor body marks but the n-s doors are the bad ones.

Yes @Andyrew did own it, but he did not get on with it.

I've had a few Carltons over the years.

Starting with a 3.0 Gsi in Starmist Black.Had fun racing a 944 on the as then new Oswestry bypass,with the instant mpg showing as low as 8. That got stolen and burnt out for the CD player..

Then I briefly owned a 2.0 estate that had been used for "ferrying show dogs around ". Bought unseen as it sounded like it had been looked after if being used to carry precious pups. Turned out the dogs had been allowed to crap,piss and puke all over the back seats and boot areas 

The smell was horrendous,even after stripping most of then interior out so it got scrapped soon after. 

My last was a 24v Diamond estate in that nice burgundy colour. Full black leather with all the toys it did a good few trips to Scotland and back.

After I welded up the swan necks and the rear footwells,the mot tester told me I was in the wrong job(butcher) and should think about welding full time....
