What were they thinking, importing this J4 from Portugal?  Two thousand hopeless pounds worth of oxide and lichen.

Yeah I sent this to my mate last week. Another ring a ding kit. EBay want to hang there heads in shame. I considered that the only correct thing to do was create another eBay account then win it. Then continue to do so every time it gets relisted and see who gets bored first. Luckily I'm not that sad ?

Yes i know what you are saying, but can't you get a new shell now, or at least you could before the pandemic  ?

Edit

Yes you can

yeah don't get me wrong I could be well wide of the mark, it'd be nice to think that's all that's going on. I have a horrible feeling though that at some point someone's mint mexico will go missing

My thoughts exactly. What are the chances that will suddenly reappear fully restored, at the same time as someone else's treasured Escort mysteriously and coincidentally goes missing?

£7500 isn't bad to be fair, but wouldn't it need to be on a Q plate? At what point is it considered significant modification?

The Q plate is only required when the age or origin of major parts of the vehicle are unknown. You should be able to re-shell a vehicle without this problem if your paperwork is in order.

Judging from many dealings on the mini forum, a used shell gets a Q plate, a brand new shell is treated like any other replacement part and is fine. So what happens is people reshell and either declare or not, sometimes dodgy, sometimes not.

Works on a points basis but I think a used shell is automatically a Q. In reality though you’d just keep mum about it so long as the chassis tags were fitted properly and you were upfront about it to a buyer.

£7500 was for the mk2 , the Mk1 was £17,500 , reliving your youth has some price only to find out that they were really AS.

And to think I towed my MK1 Mexico to the scrappys in 1985 make me weep.

Hmm, doesn't even say Escort Mexico on the V5 like it should do. Its blank.
I can't even tell if it's a Type49 shell from the photos, although it is showing the correct BFAT start to the VIN on the V5.
Its madness what these basket cases sell for now, and when I think back to how many Mk1s, Mk2s & Mk3s I scrapped in my youth! I'd be a very rich man!

That's true of 99,5%  of old cars , it's largely rose tinted glasses, minis and moggies were both poorly bolted together shite, when compared to say a Nissan Micra or even a fiat Punto...yet one will set you back thousands for a dog eared one, whilst the others are considered budget shite.

Agree about rose tinted glasses, but you are comparing apples with oranges.   The Minor and the MIni were advanced designs when they came out, and compered very well with 1950s Fiats and NIssans.

I like old cars because of the lack of pointless crap. In a mini you feel totally connected to the road AND you can fix it when it goes wrong. Cars past about 2000 are nice on a long distance or for day to day use but aren’t fun, or at least not at road legal speeds. Way back in my early 20s I had been through various motorbikes ending up with a GSXR1100R and regularly doing speeds of 140mph + (on private roads occifer ?). I realised that any accident at that speed would be fatal, and was to a mate, RIP Paul Y. I then got into British bikes and found that I could have the same ‘near death fun’ but at speeds where both my licence and life stood a chance. Faster and more refined isn’t more fun. I still think the best car I ever had was my 944 turbo, soooo quick (for the time at least, quicker than a non turbo 911) and handled amazingly. Still had more fun in my minis doing stupid turns on roundabouts an the capris sliding at even the hint of rain.
