Dollywobbler's latest dilemma

I can't remember the last time I saw a Montego of any flavour on the road. Rarity value alone must be quite desirable.

That was on my watch list actually  Tedious colour though and the more I think about it, the more I should implement my 20-year rule. Allows early 850s to sneak in, and 'sinker' Xantias...

Jag and 605 are both too black and too big!

The Maestro's nice, but four-on-the-floor maybe won't cut it.

I suspect that tool-eater 850 would really be no fun on the Welsh lanes, it'll really feel its weight if my 2.3 litre n/a 850 is anything to go by. It's similarly grey and saloon shaped too.

You've probably seen this one:

Not the best colour though.

Yup. that Xant is on the list too. All window shopping at the moment. My budget is smaller than Piers Morgan's modesty. This is good, because it stops me rushing out and just buying SOMETHING.

What I need the car to do is the thing that's traumatising me.

Key essentials.

Must be good on motorways, but not wobbly and shit on tiny, Welsh roads. (rules out big stuff)

35mpg must be possible on a run

Life would be easier (and cheaper) if it was 1994 or older. A 156 would currently require a modern policy, so I'd need to save for longer.

Must be comfortable, must have wipers that don't annoy me.

Nice-to-haves

Good colour (ie not silver or black)

Sunroof

Nice to look at

Engine that sounds nice

Apart from the last two nice-to-have points you've described an Allegro.  Buy an Allegro.

what about a nice jaguar xjr

I recon a rover 618i would be good if you could find a nice one with leather. I had a 620 sdi and it was shit, could have just been a bad one though.

I can haz Alfa 156 Sportwagon, the 2.5 V6 pezzer version.  It is yumlacious, and not too much has gone wrong with it since I bought it in 2005 when it was 3 years old.   Now it is 12, has done 80,000 miles, and still looks spiffy when I CBA to wash it, which is rarely.

Maybe have a swap lend of your Disco and my Alfa for a bit to see if you like the Alfa, but I ent selling.  Anyway, it's silver, with pimptastic tan (posh beige) Momo LEVVA.

You can get OK 156s for well under 1K, I think, but I am not sure.

About 28 mpg tops,  a good chunk less if you go Wahoooo a bit.

I can't speak for BXs, but Xantias handle like much smaller cars, even more so if you get a Hydractive jobbie. A TD (or a chipped HDi) will have plenty of beans without losing your license for you, mine never fails to make me smile.

We had a diesel 156 for a couple of years and it was ace! 1.9jtd 150bhp sportwagon. Handled well, went well and looked bloody lovely. Never let us down, either.

However if you want 20+ yearz old, what about a 145? Or 155?

Just a thought.......

A V6 Xantia still appeals, though I suspect it wouldn't take long before I got fed up with that much power. Hard to drive legally when flat out in second is beyond the national speed limit, therefore hard to enjoy the potential of the engine.

A 999cc Fiat Uno will break the national speed limit in 2nd according to it's own speedo,  not a noise I wish to hear again.

I'd also love a 156. But doing 25k a year means diesel and it does seem to defeat the attraction of these by having diesel. My plan would be to get a high mileage example as it hopefully it must have worked most of it'slife. I would be dubious about a 30k example - maybe it was in the workshop more than on the road?

My Marea has the early 2.4 JTD in i. I've had it 12 months and done 35,000 miles. 67k on it when I bought it. Only problem I've had is the crank sensor going. It was well looked after previously though - first owner of 10 years had the oil changed every 6 months regardless of mileage, second owner even fitted a stainless steel exhaust on it.

That first owner actually collected it from the factory and toured round Europe in it for 6 months before bringing it to Blighty...

Small enough for Welsh roads, economical, a nice colour (if  you like rosso red), seats 4.

Over 20 years old
i used to do 80 miles a day in mine and it was fine, took it all over Europe too back in the day loaded with camping gear.

Speaking from experience, don't. See earlier post for highlights. I've owned a lot of old cars, this was one of the newer ones but one of the few I've been glad to see the back of. Owned 155 Widebody 2.0 16v, Sprint Veloce 1.5, Spider 2.0, all ace in there own way, 2.4 JTD with 165k was the worst buy I've had from 40+. cars.

I battered a 120 thousand mile 400 quid 145 Cloverleaf round Europe. I swapped a perfect Honda Accord for a sketchy GTV, and bought another GTV at the same time for 400 quid. All were brilliant cars, with no issues other than normal servicing/belts. Alfa raised their game when the 156 came along, so these will be even better. Never got less than 35mpg in normal use out of a 2l twinspark either.

If you need convincing to get an Alfa Romeo, don't. If you HAVE to have an Alfa, then buy one from someone else who felt the same.

My red GTV was the best all round driving experience I've ever had.

Wonderful,wonderful cars.

If we had to replace the modern (02) leon like for like like (which has been dam good tbh, whilst being shit in many minor livable areas) then the alfa would be a carefully considered option.

If a modern is not what you want then may I suggest a 205/309 derv possibly in turd blower flavor or dare I say it a mk1 clio derv in purple with HGF? Only the clio of these three has a sexy sounding engine though it must be said, sexy engine notes are a deeply personal matter.

What I need the car to do is the thing that's traumatising me.

Key essentials.

Must be good on motorways, but not wobbly and shit on tiny, Welsh roads. (rules out big stuff) - Check, and sort of - depends on your idea of 'big'

35mpg must be possible on a run - Check, probably...

Life would be easier (and cheaper) if it was 1994 or older. A 156 would currently require a modern policy, so I'd need to save for longer. - Check

Must be comfortable, must have wipers that don't annoy me. Check, and to me, these have wiparz of WIN, so check.

Nice-to-haves

Good colour (ie not silver or black) - Tastefully restrained metallic blue - suit you sir, so Check

Sunroof - Check

Nice to look at - Check

Engine that sounds nice - If you like tractor noises then check.

The cold hard facts suggest pretty much anything would do. Cold hard facts are boring though.

I would forget the 156 and go straight for a 166 2.0 TS in Lusso spec. Not as desirable as the 3.0 V6 but still plenty of grunt and kinder on the fuel. A Lusso interior is a thing to behold and these are criminally cheap at the moment and quite rare.

I was looking at 156s when I happened upon a 166 by accident and there was no comparison for me. I shall regret selling that car for as long as I live

Those 156s are handsome as hell but I think a diesel one on a meagre budget has too much potential to end in the thing exploding in a shower of cogs and springs. Diesels attract a strange mythical premium so I'd be going for a pez.
Volvo 850s are quite wide but surprisingly nimble on back roads and can make pretty brisk time cross country, even in lowly 2.0 flavour. Mine was a 20V job and was just about on top of it so I imagine the 10V to be pretty dull TBH. They can rot but not often.
What about a Rover 75? Wafty comfort and nice handling. Also cheap and handsome.
