Worth doing a plug chop now - might be running lean now it’s been de restricted

I'm sure twosmoke300 will correct me if I'm off the mark  but I reckon you could go up 10% on the main jet and work your way back until you've got the jetting spot on. Always better to err on the side of caution with two strokes.

It's been more than de-restricted, it's had the carb upgraded from 28mm to 34mm, the barrel and piston changed to a Mitaka big bore, a rave 2 pneumatic powervalve.

The original barrel didn't have a slot for a powervalve to be fitted so I bought all of the bits required to upgrade it and took it to my local and many years experienced bike mechanic to do the work.

After he swapped everything over he said he was expecting it to be faster but felt that there might still be something in the exhaust restricting it, I mentioned I'd previously had it opened when removing the cat and there was a smaller diameter tube inside it.

At the time I'd tried looking up what the inside of a 2 stroke exhaust should look like but couldn't find the answer so left the smaller pipe inside. The internal pipe went from the start of the exhaust and tapered out and ended in the middle and the cat was fitted from the middle towards the other end.

Anyway the mechanic recommended removing the inner pipe too.

I'd read that a cooler plug was required for the big bore head but the mechanic recommended I use the original plug to run it in then swap to a cooler one as it would probably foul it if I swapped straight away.

The jetting on the carb  was set as standard for a full power de-restricted RS 125 so should be fine for my setup.

There were a few things restricting the engine including the inlet manifold which had a tiny washer jammed inside it, the exhaust which I mentioned, the CDI unit had an emissions limiter which needed modified to remove a flat spot in the rev range and the barrel didn't have a slot for the powervalve.

Any recommendations for running in a 2 stroke after having a new barrel and piston fitted?

For running in just use the engine normally, don't labour it in high gears or sit at a constant speed and avoid using more than 2/3rds of the rev range for the first 500 miles, use the best quality 2T oil you can buy, also let it warm up before riding it, by gradually blipping it until the water temp gauge starts to move off its stop, a cold seizure is about the worst thing you can have happen on a 2T.

Went out for a blast today with my Mrs driving her KMX and me on the Aprilia, I took it easy for most of the journey but when returning up the road to the garage where we usually race and the KMX always wins easily, this time the Aprilia was clearly faster and I wasn't even trying or giving it full throttle. I still need to take the other freshly rebuilt KMX and see what it's like, my plan at the time of buying it was to sell the Aprilia and have a KMX each for me and the Mrs but I think we might end up keeping the three of them for the time being.

I still have a KE100 I'm hoping to get roadworthy shortly and a KDX200 for messing around on offroad.

If this is in the wrong place please move, but I thought I would stick it in this thread as its for bikes😉

I have a tyre pressure monitoring system for bikes. I have never used it, I don't know how good it is but it is free. The sensors fit inside the tyre, I guess like in a car. There is a digital display for monitoring and it has warning beeps 🙄 for low pressure I think. I believe it will fit most wheels from 16" upwards maybe smaller wheels too.

I never fitted it because I never seemed to keep my bikes long enough! And I don't use my bikes enough either, I check the tyre pressure before I go out as the bike stands for sometimes weeks at a time.

Like I said free to whoever, or it goes in the bin.

I know we've had a few half threads on this subject, and jollyfkr had one for sale a while ago but....

Velosolexes.... My current commute is once a week 2 and a bit miles either way which I cycle quite happily, but my mind can't be helped from wondering how much more life affirming it would feel to turn up in a small cloud of 2 stoke on something with less brakes than the 20 year old MTB I currently use.

Stevenage has many quirks and one is that mopeds are allowed on the cycle path network. So the lack of top speed is no issue, it is however mildly hilly. So what I did wonder about is online opinion seems to sway from them being perky to anyone bigger than a french teenager needing to pedal uphills? I probably weigh 2x frenchies so it's a reasonable concern.

How are spares? Would one after a bit of fetling be reasonably reliable (reasonable being not the end of the world breaking down every now and then but not so much it ends up dumped at the back of the garage in a disagrace) with a bit of maintenance?

It'd have somewhere dry to be stored at home / work, also getting at minimum a weekly ride would probably do it some good?

I've probably drunk too much over Xmas and it's a terrible idea. Luckily the current situation means I personally wouldn't be able to pursue one for a couple of months at least by the looks of things so this phase can pass, especially as the weather warms up and anything with roundish wheels hits more than I'd be willing to pay. I'd be tempted by other pedal and pop mopeds if I came across one cheap enough, but most seem either terminally fucked or serious money.

I have a Velosolex 2200. There are a few parts specialists in this country, but most reside in France which, thanks to Brexit, will make things more expensive and inconvenient, sadly. You'd be better off with a later one than mine, e.g. a 3800, for spares availability. If I were thinking of running mine for anything more regular than occasional silliness I would be joining the NACC, as they are a goldmine of information and useful contacts about these and other weird and wonderful mopeds and cyclemotors. The classifieds in the magazine can also be a good place to obtain one, and if you're developing an interest in this sort of thing it's a good gateway drug!

In terms of usefulness, they are probably on a par with an electric bike. I am 16st, and I struggled to get 25mph on the flat on mine, less on hills when you need to get pedalling! Would it be reliable? There's very little to go wrong, really - it's essentially a very basic push iron with a 2-stroke lawnmower engine mounted on the front wheel!

And while I'm on I'll just leave this here 😁

Someone I knew had three bikes he used for commuting from Ilford to Moorgate in London, about 10 miles both ways.

He used either his Enfield Bullet fitted with a Briggs & Stratton diesel engine, a Suzuki 1260 Bandit with a turbo fitted, and a VeloSolex (not sure what model), depending on his mood and how late he left home. He looked great on his VeloSolex, as he often wore an old army greatcoat and a WWII German helmet when he rode it.

I'm considering doing something stupid.

I always fancied a Royal Enfield Bullet 500, but assumed they would keep making them forever. Not so - new emissions regs in India is killing the 500. And seemingly the 350 bullet is being replaced by something new and retro call the meteor.

Export markets from next year will only get the meteor, Himalayan and the interceptor. Bugger.

Local Enfield dealer has a standard bullet and a classic 500 in stock and I'm sort of tempted:

Half of me wants a standard bullet, half insists the classic with single seat and neater rear guard looks nicer......it's £500 more mind.

This is the last generation of 500, with unit construction, EFI and 5 speed box. Pumping out a mighty 27bhp which I think is still 6 more than the old pre uni bullet

I looked at used ones but they really hold their value.....

@They_all_do_that_sir. My friend bought a 500 Bullet Classic and has converted it to a Classic by buying new and used parts from India very cheaply.

He has also fitted a Powertronic and has done some work on the head and fuel injection (and on a dyno) and it runs nice and smoothly. No more power, just nicer to ride. He loves it.

Disgraceful!

Been offered a bike which is cheap (for Spain). The idea is that when visitors come over they can use it (rather than my Enfield or Street Triple).

But will they feel insulted, as it's a 650 Dullvile?

Kinda what I was thinking - I'm not sure there's £500 worth of extras on the classic version, given how easy it is to get bits.....

Mrs wants to do her test in 2021 and has her heart set on a CBR500R to replace her trusty CBR125R so may need to make sure there's garage space for all that......
