This is the puzzle.

1988 honda ns125r. 

I think about 95% all there. Some doubled up parts.

I took engine out to get it home.

Body panels terrible. Anyone have any panels in a shed somewhere?

Will see how far my enthusiasm goes.

V5 and frame match !

Only 14 previous owners. Yes fourteen.

Am i right in thinking these early engines unrestricted are upwards of 25 hp.

Yes you are correct, or there abouts. I had an Italian import many years ago, before they were stupid money,bloody loved it and regretted selling it.  Gutless until it hit the power, then it would really go. Easy saw 90 on the very accurate* Speedo. Keep on with it otherwise I may have to take another trip to Basingstoke to relieve you of it.

No brake lights for an MOT and even the reflector isn't required in the latest manual.

Number plate and horn. I doubt you need a working ignition switch either if the kill switch works to turn it on and off.

My understanding of MoT rules is obviously a little flawed 🤣 I'll admit, it was based on the assumption of similar standards to cars.

I'm truly surprised that no lighting is legally required.

Some history, i bought it off son of man who has had it since 2002. Son said it was a project bike. 

Today i started on engine expecting the worst.

Looks like the engine is ok, maybe.

He had been in here, all waterways clear and clean, turns over with compression.

Looks new piston and clean bore.

I love hondas, all the bolts came out easy.

Maybe i will not be splitting bottom end and just hoping all is well.

This will be a slow burn project.

I believe its written with the intent that competition motorbikes like enduros can go on the road eg between stages without needing loads of work.

You still can't use a bike with no lights after dusk and it's just less safe to be riding round with no brake lights so I imagine most people get them through a test then put what lights they want on.

Actually on a re-read of the manual, I think if you have a brake light but nothing else this should be OK but if it also contains a rear "position light" then probably not as all the other lights are down as "must be inspected if front/rear position lights are fitted"

Hence why its easier to remove it all.

I have got bike  MOTs with no lights also some with head lights disconnected and masked, even cars can do MOT with head lights disconnected and masked as I get the odd import MOT for registration.  I'm looking for info on the cheap LED "headlight" sets to fit for MOT as I may need to put the wiring/switches in place, as bike currently has none,  for some foreign on/off road trip so having relevant paperwork (MOT)  may be useful.

Busa has lost it's fairings to get at the oil filter.

I am waiting for two used infill panels to come as mine have broken. I'm not - and never have been - OCD about these things but the lugs have broken and they use trim clips to hold them in place.

New toy achieved . Had to drive from SF to bloody Cambridge to get it cos the prev owner was too much of a flange to ride it to our arranged meeting place in Bromsgrove. 
340 mile ride back home on it 😂

Feckin love it .

Theres nothing quite like that first ride with a full license and no one watching you - nerve wracking and exciting at the same time.

MCN comparison is worth a try.

I find bikesure to give good cover (at least on paper) for a good price.

so knew insurance was due and couldnt remember how much id paid last year tpft

got quote last week for 130 tpft and 160 comp

finally got email off them today and the renewal is 114 tpft (109 last year)

might ring them and ask them how much comp is :D

innit nearly good being old :D

or @Six-cylinder = hes older than noah :D

My wife has just passed her A2 test, anyone got anything for sale?

Looking more in the 250-300 range due to weight, she didn't do the test on a 650 as wasn't happy with the weight of it.

She prefers naked to faired type bikes and I'm thinking something modern enough to have fuel injection would be good.

Just assessing what i have. All turns over by hand smoothly. All six gears seem to be there. BUT, is it normal that there is , when in gear, free play between crank turning and output shaft turning. I think these engines are all gear driven inside, no chains.  Why would there be freeplay between crank and output shaft ?

The gears are only pegged to each other via a dog drive system so you will always get play between them

Some lost motion, lash, play or whatever term you like to use, is common in most automotive gear trains.  Whether it is acceptable will depend on how much there is.  It is however usually less than can be tolerated in chain systems.  If you can inspect the gears and the shaft bearings and all look ok and there's no play in the shafts, it is probably in the TADTS category.
