Would these pads be suitable for track use? I could file them down to fit or just repeatedly bash them into the calipers with a large 12oz hammer as the car balances perilously on that rusty Scissor Jack I bought at a car boot sale some time ago. Might cross drill the discs as well. Badly. After this i'll replace (most) of the brake fluid with some Halfords 'Racing' stuff, but if theres not enought left after i've spilt it down the wing, i'll use that metal canister of Duckhams brake fluid thats been in the shed since my grandfather left it there in 1998. After ive pissed around with all this for a morning I expect I'll ring an ambulance or something or warn VOSA of my plans.

I've just seen one tonight on a council estate, it had got grass growing round the wheels, it was on its arse at the back, someone had painted it gold and silver (probably not the factory...) and someone had made a half arsed attempt at 'modernising' it with some eBay clear lenses. Call me a cynic but I'm guessing this will appear on EBay as needs a few small jobs weekends work...

This is why I'm happy to tackle most jobs on the car except anything to do with exhausts. If it isn't rusted up or seized its a fucker to get at and invariably involves you working on your back inches from the bloody thing.

I like the Focus or is it Foci plural? You do have to watch the rear suspension mounts however for rust as all the shit collects in here. Coated mine in Kurust, then zinc primer then shutz then applied a generous coating of Waxoyl everywhere. Possibly overkill I thought afterwards as I made furious attempts to get Waxoyl out of my hair.

Completely agree as above. German cars now are no better built and possibly worse than the equivalent Ford. Its a status symbol these days to shout to the world 'I'm a Parasite', Years ago it stood for you had a bit of class and taste.

Its a sign with people these days they don't want middle of the road, its got to be better than next doors Golf or A4 or whatever.

That statement aptly describes all modern German motors....have you seen the profits posted by BMW for the past financial year? It's in the billions.Astonishing..somebody is having a larf and it's not the consumer. Cheaply built with a veneer of finish...and charge the customer full whack. Binis are just the tip of the iceberg. My mother in laws 59 plate 320d has just lunched it's autobox after hardly a tyresmoking 70k. And yet the press...check out this week's Autocar BMW lovefest... consistently keep licking their backsides...I just don't get it at all. Yes their good to drive....yes Binis keep Brit workers in employment but get real..as private ownership prospects they are no more than average in durability and reliability. Owning a Bini is just proof of that fact.

Seen this in Home Bargains Viscol fully synth 5w30 4.5 litres. £9.99. There is the additional m2c whatever thing underneath. If I use this in a 2001 Focus 1.6 is it likely to explode? Its the right viscosity but will this be ok? Or have I missed something? It seems a bit cheap to me?

I really rate Barums. Hold the road really well, wear decent. Made by continental, I think they are OE on some cars Skoda I think. Some tyres like Pirelli are wildly overated, general rule is avoid the cheapest ling long shingles rubbish but then don't waste money on a set of Michelin Pilots on a 12 year old Astra.

When we bought mrs sierramans Focus, it was fitted with an awful JVC CD player, the buttons were so small as to be distracting whilst driving. Anyway I'm a stickler for originality so at a recent car boot managed to pick up an original Ford set with cassette as fitted when new for a paltry £1. No code but no problem looked it up on Internet.

Now I'm enjoying the cassette experience again, which is fortunate as most of the music I like was available on cassette. Who else is a fan of going back to cassettes?

A DS could be trouble, if one car can hide a multitude of sins that's it. I'd have thought something like a peugeot 205 rallye if you could find one, something that's nigh on impossible to find in this country. Either that or a 2 door cortina or granada. In other words a odd derivative of a popular car in UK.

I'd give the 'back woods' type Auctions like Bawtry Motor Auctions and the like a miss. As people say once you add fees in, you are buying it with such a small margin to cover the (certain) repairs. A lot of the stuff in there is sub prime crap part ex from these dodgy 'CCJ's no problem!' outfits. Which is likely a fucked Picasso that's been owned by some mouth breathing idiot that's run it on a shoestring. The private entries? Last chance saloon before the scrapyard. I used to go for the laugh really, watching tin pot 'have a go' car sales men and itinerant Slovakians picking up a 'bargain'

In my limited experience, once they start binding you might free it off and it get by another week or two, but generally you are best getting another either exchange or recon. If I'm right in thinking the 600 would have an internal handbrake shoe to disc? If its got the integral handbrake/foot brake type then you might get joy winding the piston in to unseize it and cleaning up the handbrake detent on the back of the caliper. Unless its the cable seizing inside its sheathing I'd rule that out also.
