Blanks in your car cv.

As a bit of a follow on from my Stupid Question Amnesty posting about the fact I've never driven a Ford Focus I thought I'd lob a thread on so we can list all the shite that we really should of owned or driven but haven't got around to it. Obviously I'm not talking about exotic stuff but bread and butter cars that we see every day.

Here's some of mine, apologies if I have driven any but forgotten due to their general dullness.

1. Ford Focus. Been in many but never sampled the delights.

2. Seats, all models. I know I've been a passenger in an Ibiza but that's about it.

3. Subaru, all models. Not only have I never driven one but I can honestly say I've never even sat in one either, regardless of model.

4. VW Golf mk3/4/5/6/7+. I know they get slagged off on these pages but I really cannot comment 'cos I've never had the displeasure of driving any.

5. Renault Megane.

6. Renault Clio. (nearly bought one though)

7. Land Rover Discovery. (had plenty of Rangies though)

8. Skodas. All front engine models. (except a test drive of a Superb)

I'm sure there's many more but I can't remember!

So then, what's missing from your car cv?

Posted

I've never actually owned a Marina. I've driven a couple, and almost bought one once, but never quite got there. Other than that I don't think there are any glaring gaps that spring to mind.

Posted

I can't think of much.

I've never driven a Fiat 130. Imagine they're amusing in a slightly awful way.

Rolls Royce Silver Shadow. Been in a few, never actually driven one. If the Turbo R is anything to go by, it'll be slightly disappointing in a nice way.

Renault 30 TX. Owned one, but it went to RatDat before I got it running (or it rusted away)

Peugeot 604 STi. This is proving expensive to try.

There's something else, one I'd like to try but I cannot remember what it is.

Unless you count 70s BL Triumphs, I've never owned a Rover.

*awaits deletion/ban*

Other obvious gaps - Not owned a Landy, never owned anything French that wasn't a Citroen, never owned a BMW or an Alfa either. Plenty of time though, I hope!

You've never lived :D

I've never had a go of an old Fiat. Only Fiats I've driven have been rental Puntos and Stilos. Really fancy a bit of time in a 128.

Never driven a proper Jag, and would like to if I could afford the costs!

Also fancy something a bit Yank, but again, costs frighten me.

There's loads more..............

I like to think of lotus-era Protons as the modern thinking man's Alfa.

Too many to list. Relative youth (!?!?!?) means a lot of pre-'90s stuff has escaped me. I make sure I write about anything interesting I drive, just so I don't forget what it was like.

Most obviously embarassing oversight:- thinking about it, I've never driven a Sierra legally. Not driven one since I was 16, on the Gorse Lane industrial estate.

Never driven an original shape Range Rover, either.

You need to try two of those. A 74ish 3.5 (must be High Compression with PAS) 2dr and then a 92-93ish 3.9 Vogue SE Auto. They need to be good ones though, a bad one isn't a nice drive, a good one is sublime.

The 4.2 LSE is a bit much for someone who's not tried previously one, and the air suspension seems to have been removed from lots by Luddites who don't understand how it works.

Dear Sir;

I read the title of this thread and thought it was going to be about the different type of "switch" and "equipment" blacking plates that we encounter in our shitters. I got myself comfy in my favourite leatherette armchair with a glass of weak lemon cordial to read these tales. Imagine my disappointment when I discovered it was some old blokes rammeling on about cars they have never driven.

I have never driven the Lunar Rover but you wouldnt hear me complaining about it.

For me, I'm still having to live with the crushing disappointment of having never owned or driven a Leyland Princess. I haven't really owned very much BL tat at all. Must do something about this.

I've also never driven a pre-1979 2CV on the road.

.... a lot of very sage advice

I'd love to do a back to back, cradle-to-grave, PC style early vs late RR test. The last P38 I drove (4.0 HSE) felt like a tall Rover 800.... e.g. fabulous and lovely.

In all the American cars I've owned, or rented on vacation, I can't bring to mind a single Ford, nor even Lincoln or Mercury. I did test-drive a 1982 Mustang once (3.3 straight 6, RHD) but failed to buy it. I've also never owned anything with Jeep stamped on it.

Back across the Atlantic, and there are so many I haven't had my hands on. RR/Bentley, all models, never driven any of 'em; which is shameful as Bentley was my mother's maiden name! I've never owned a car older than I am (born 1959). Never had a Simca-era Chrysler/Talbot; in fact I've had very few Frog cars at all. Japanese coupes have totally passed me by too. I'm thinking Skyline, 200SX, 240/60/80Z, Celica etc. Also, to my dismay, I've completely missed out on Daf.

I'm quite sure there are others but it's the middle of the night and I'm tired...

Disappointingly, I've never owned about 96% of other car makes, I've only ever owned a Nissan (technically) a Ford (Again only technically) a Vauxhall (part ownership) and 5 Rover 800s.

Luckily through work/some family/mates etc... I have been given the chance to sample many other cars old and new, fully working or seriously falling apart.

Here are some particular models I admire but otherwise have never (and probably never likely to) driven

1. 86-94 Jaguar XJ6/40 - (Never driven or even been in one)

2. Series III Jaguar/Daimler - (As above)

3. VW Phaeton - (As above)

4. Most BMW 7 Series - (As above)

5. Audi A8 - (As above)

6. Any Rolls Royce/Bentley - (Been to the launch of the new Rolls Royce Ghost a few months ago and had a poke around some of the new Royces, should have blagged a test drive though  )

7. W140 Mercedes S-class (Been a passenger in one though, for a very short trip)

8. Lexus LS400 - (Mates got one but I've only ever been a passenger)

9. Mk3 Ford Fiesta

10. Porsche 911 + any other exotica

11. Mk2 Cavalier

12. Ford XR2/3 (Nearly bought one though)

13. 3-wheeled Reliant

14. Mini (Original shape)

15. VW Beetle (Original shape)

Thats all I can think of at the mo............

Wondered what the small explosions were, when I turned round the corner at the end of the street. Next time I rebuild a CV joint, I must remember to keep the new bearings and my shotgun blanks in separate box... Weak, I know, but it was what I thought of when I saw the thread title.

Yours sincerely A.N.Idiot Esq.

Funnily enough, the blanks in my car owning CV largely coincide with the stuff I got to play with in the garage trade in the 90's, but couldn't afford/wasn't brave enough to own then.

Rover SD1 V8

Cav GSi and/or Turbo 4x4

Sierra Cosworth (any)

W126 Merc saloon with a V8 up front

There's a few cars I could've bought at the time, but didn't bother 'cos either A) a mate owned one, and I was sick of fixing it, or B) I could borrow something that worked, from work. I'm thinking I should get one, just to see if they're as hellish to live with as I reckoned at the time.

Mini (not fussed which, preferably a 1275)

'Scort RS2000

Early Mk2 XR2

And then the fantasy stuff...

'65 Olds 442

Delorean DMC-12

Renault 5 Turbo 2

...but none of those are exactly shite! Well maybe the...

Owned or driven? I have never owned or driven a Range Rover, it's a big regret!

I have in fact never owned any V8, i did on several occasions drive my fathers p6 Rover (UCH966L) and i used it for a good 6 months whilst he had a company car, a 1983 Cavalier sri. A986 JHA i think the reg. was we picked it up from Adams of Tipton. Even then i thought he was nuts choosing the Cav over that beautiful V8.

Quite why i can remember the reg. numbers of these two cars is beyond me really.

I would like any British V8 especially a Sherpa coupe or a TR7 preferably a Longbridge one, because they built them better in Brum.

A Jaguar XJ12 or even a 6, a Coventry built MK2 like Arthur Daley drove images?q=tbn:ANd9GcRxtHREkDiI8nkzIoNraGfdll08NLHJuJA7oGUSsGedIcdXRxkOIpem3h8SPA hero!

I have driven a Triumph Stag with the 3.0 V8, that was nice, not fast but very nice.

So i've got a thing for V8's then. But they are far too expensive to run these day's as it's 2011 and we are in the day's of tax the f*ck out of everyone with the lamest excuse (i.e GLOBAL WARMING/CLIMATE CHANGE)

I would like any 70's Datsun, especially a 180B SSS, a 200 Laurel or a 300c. Any large engined French car from the 70's or 80's, especially a Renner 30. Any rear engined Skoda. A Triumph Vitesse, a Triumph GT6 or a Spitfire MK2 or 3 or f*ck it even a mk4 or an MG Midget.:oops:

I would also like a Toyota Celica TA22 or a Corolla ke30.

The last two are to me exotica though, i'm never going to be able to afford one, which brings me to what or why i'm thinking (quietly) of buying a Mazda MX5.......if i get the early one It looks like a British sports car from the 60's and especially at this time of year they are quite reasonably priced. they are also in my book at least ,shite. Well whada ya fink guys?

Now where can i get that welder......

Although I like them a lot, I've never owned or driven a Saab of any kind. I've been a passenger in a few, though

Never driven a FWD hot hatch. The only 'fast' FWD car I've driven was a mate's FTO years and years ago, but now I'd love to have a go with some of the stuff my mates were driving back in the day. Suped up Fiat Uno's, 205gti's, XR2's etc. Missed all that while I was busy wiping all their grins off their faces with my hot 100E!

RWD pwns.

IT PWNS!!!! :x

Never driven any complete chod either. Today I reckon old Ladas and Skodas would be a complete loon to drive. Modern chod doesn't have the same shonky appeal to me. A knackered Focus doesn't do it.

I have never owned an Alfa, nor does it seem likely that I will in the foreseeable future. This is Clarkson's fault for saying that "you can't be a true petrol head if you've never owned an Alfa". I just want to prove the gobshite wrong. I do have a Lancia, though :D

I don't see the (apparently popular) appeal in the Mk 1 Rangie. It's no fun having to drive such a large, supposedly-luxury vehicle with your head squashed up against the headlining, and I'm not even what you would call tall. However did the burly boys in blue used to manage?

I have never owned a Renault.

I can't think of much i haven't driven at some point, I've never driven a "proper" VW Beetle but have a Porsche 911 which I'm told is similar, and I've never driven a rear engined Skoda neither, come to think of it, other then the Porsche i don't think I've ever driven anything rear engined.

Austin 3-litre. Ideally in white, ideally my dad's old one, though it's almost certainly long since fragged.

ADO16: Always wanted one since I was about four when they were absolutely everywhere.

Alfa 156 manual: what's not to like?

Cortina Mk2: owned a Mk3, one (pre-airflow) Mk1 and countless 4/5 models but never a Mk2.

105E Anglia.

A40 Farina: again, what's not to like about them?

Early A55 Farina: love the two tone ones especially.

1960's VW Camper. Apologies for this inclusion as they're usually scene attacked to the max, but they look so nice if not desperately arsed about with.

Astra GTE Mk1: love 'em to bits but never owned one.

XJ6 series one in plae blue please. The absolute darling of the XJ range, look completely perfect in every way and so much nicer than later ones.

Silver Shadow 1: ideally in silver.

Loads more to come...

Skoda Superb 1.4 - I know they are apparently OK, but I would love to know properly

Granada 2.1Dl - drove a Merc 200d once and both Serena 1.6 and 2.0d was amused by the experience. The 2.1Dl would probably trounce them

BMW 850 CSi

a 7.3 Merc

By eck this has got my grey matter working. To be honest i've not owned that many cars in my motoring life (24 years) I used to work in garage so have driven lots of cars but moving them to a workshop hardly counts !!

But I still have an ankering for something BL so here goes, BL first

I've never owned or properly driven a Mini (original) so that has to be on the list.

Mini Moke is another definate but the prices are stupid at mo. (yes i've been looking)

Don't ask me why but I fancy owning an Ital at some point

Princess or Ambassador

Austin 1300 (this is a must at some point)

Ford Cortina MkIII/ IV or V

Vauxhall Senator (early)

Vauxhall FE Victor (again a must)

VW Bay window (getting second thoughts on that due to costs !!)

Rover SD1 - has to be a 3500 vandan Plas or Vitesse no others need apply

Fiat X19 or Strada Abarth

Alfa Sud

Mitsubishi Colt Turbo (C12a 80's version)

Mitsubishi Starion / Galant Turbo (square verison from mid eighties)

Nothing French has ever flotted my boat so they keep off the list i'm afraid ;-)

That i'll do for now..

Saab 900 classic is my main one. Everytime I start to think 'oh, I'll get one of those next' I get the taste for something else instead. Are they really worth trying though? What puts me off a bit is the interior, a bit uninspiring IMO.

Volvo 240, Rover 600 (623 GSi would be nice), Rover 400 Tourer, Rover 75, Rover 800/Sterling Mark 1 (soon to fill this gap hopefully), Dolomite, Rover SD1 V8, Sierra (must be Ghia spec with the pepperpots), Vauxhall Omega, and a Hillman Imp.

I've never even sat in an Audi, new or old, and I'm quite happy to keep it that way. Strange but I'm totally not bovvered by them.

Too many to list. To begin with, I have never been in a Tagora.

Ones that I have to somehow at least find a way to drive at some point in the future: Tagora (of course), Peugeot 504 Coupe, Tatra 613, Lotus Carlton, Thema 8.32, Skoda Rapid, Citroen CX, Hyundai XG30, Mitsubishi Sigma, NSU Ro80, Samba Cabriolet and a Chinese Citroen ZX Saloon!
