I'm too much of a potty mouthed curse word to post there, and besides I curse word object on principle to getting curse word censored like that.

dunno - just a thought for getting things funded more reliably.

I never really went on Retro Rides. Modded things aren't really my scene, and I don't have the time or the skills to do it anyway.

Has PH gone down the tubes in a similar way, or is it still thriving? I rarely use it so it's hard to tell.

Pistonheads is the car forum for people who don't know anything about, and in most cases dislike, cars for what they are and, instead, spend their days discussing whether the green illumination for the automatic-transmission gearlever in the new Mercedes AMG Tripleblack Doomhammer is better than the blue illumination for the auto gearlever in the old Mercedes AMG Turbospin Fahrzeug.

Of course, not all are like that but the Mammon worship does seem to be taking over.  Some of them even like electric cars!

I found RR was a bit of a ‘clique’  to be honest. You were ok if you fitted the description perfectly or knew someone there already but if not there wasn’t much of a place for you.

I lurked on there for a while just reading select project threads, then decided to sign up but there just wasn’t the welcoming feel to it over there so I quickly stopped bothering with it.
It is heavily focused on modified (or fucked up!) though which I’ve never been into so I don’t think I’d have hung around long either way.
Can’t say I’m at all bothered it’s dead now really. Going on like they did wasn’t a way to succeed imho.

Is it just me or is RR down at the moment with a 429 error?

Edit: I think temporary

They've seen the cruel words on here and packed it in. Crying.

I don’t know what a Mammon is, but yeah! Pistonheads is definitely not a forum for anyone that has any mechanical or automotive know-how. Discussing and comparing cup holders by big ego types with more money (credit) than sense is much closer the mark. There really are some bizarre people over there.

I think I went for a look once and after a short time decided it was mostly a bunch of absolute wankers talking utter shit. Never bothered with it again.

Pretty sure KfW is a regular and crucial part of these meets and they're still going strong.

Think I first saw PH in about 2005, and it was getting that way then - some total arseholes who I had the misfortune to meet in real life, so can confirm they really are that bad.

Plus lots of weirdos. Actual weirdos.

Kev from Wales? I just remembered that was another thing that put me off RR. The guy is venerated like a saint but I had a bad experience when he sold me a 2 litre Pinto claiming it was in good condition and dropped it off at my mother's when I wasn't there. Said engine looked like it had been at the bottom of the sea and was completely seized, I was too embarrassed to kick up a fuss and didn't say anything 😪It was only £100 but it still pissed me off.

Happens more than folk care to admit. If its half fucked then state as such. Like you said its not the money, its feeling like youve been ridden like a Blackpool donkey. I was taught to be  always honest in these matters. On the basis that if some 6.5 ft skinhead from kent travels all the way up to buy something youve lied about, dont be suprised if he thumps you.

I shamefully once referred to a peugeot 405 estate i had at the time as a “parts chaser” even though i never carried actual parts in it.

I blame Retrorides.

Pistonheads is equal parts interesting and embarrassing, it's a good way to keep up with automotive news and there's always a lively discussion on each news story, but for god's sake don't venture into the off topic sections if you think you're doing alright £ wise, or even think you're reasonably well off - it's like that HENRY subreddit (High Earner, Not Rich Yet) except I think the subreddit is satire.

Best one I saw was on budget day and a fella was like "I'm SO FUCKED, I have three houses worth £2m+ each and this new mansion tax is gonna cost me at least £13k a year, I'm TOTALLY FUCKED"

Gosh, what a nice problem to have.

I've not been on for years for the reasons stated, there were some great people & projects on there, but the pious attitude was a joke.

I still modify stuff after 40 years of driving but pointing out something wasn't safe/even dangerous meant you were being negative " a hater" was ridiculous.

This sort of comment is what leads to rule changes, prosecution or worse, the excess camber cars being a big case in point.theyd be screaming blue murder if they or there car was hit by some smack head on a delivery in some unroadworthy/uninsured post so what they were doing isn't comparable????

Or those posts ‘£100k fun car what to choose?’. Those financial threads are a laugh, they are literally dedicating their life to this idea of retiring at 50. Spreadsheet after spreadsheet after spreadsheet and missing out on life in the meantime.

I remember links to RR being posted on that other blue forum’s chat, where people were both laughing at and being shocked at the same time by some, erm, modifications. The fact you couldn’t tell people that fiberglassing chassis components and cutting springs, especially the way they were doing it en masse back then, is both stupid and dangerous put me right off. It’s not negativity and disrespecting someone’s build, it’s common sense. Some shocking welding was also applauded as “restoration” and people saying that there’s absolutely no structural integrity in that weld had their posts deleted on the negativity and their car, their choice grounds. That was enough for me to never want to join, despite that car choice is right up my street

I’m really happy that this corner of the internet exists though, and should’ve listened to @fatharris sooner and joined years ago.

I still check in there regularly but rarely post. There are a couple do threads on there I do really enjoy catching up on and would be genuinely sad if they went and one which is probably the most invested I’ve ever been on a forum.

There was another regular poster who I followed and I’m pretty sure drove most of the traffic onto the site who was basically bullied off there because of the egos of those running it. Luckily he’s on here now so I can catch up regularly.

Yeah, I’ve met dozens of AS’ers. Maybe even into 3 figures! I’d summarise them as ‘Mostly Harmless’.

Good to know! It was a Grillo mower, or similar, if I remember?  I think that’s the one and only time I’ve met an Autoshiter for non-AS reasons. The seller of the mower has/had no connection with the forum.

I hated that from them. That and 'shop truck'.

Yeah, most of us live in the UK and require insurance, tax and MOT on vehicles we use. So haven't the luxury to have a vehicle sitting around for that twice a year RR parts purchase. 😂
