Collection Day has dawned!

Now how am I going to do this?  I don't think the usual Collection format is appropriate, because I've incorporated the mission into what was almost a normal Friday.  So you're not getting a breakfast pic (Frosties and coffee) or a poo count (2), nor a photo of interim transportation (brand new Honda).  Or even lunch (in the Stan Laurel pub in Ulverston; lasagne and chips).

I've dropped a big clue there without intending to.  What have I recently been tracking that was in Ulverston?

New readers may not realise that I had one of these, a 1961 automatic Velox, way back in 1977.  It was the first car I bought, and cost a whole £25.

That's it, with the 18-year-old Ed at the wheel.

And here in 2025 is the 66-year-old Ed at the wheel of a 1962 Cresta automatic, about 20 minutes before I started the engine and drove it home.  This one cost, as they do these days, rather a lot more than £25!

So how did this happen?

I discovered this car, and its manual brother, in 2013 when out for a little exploratory drive.  The owner being visible on site, I stopped and we had a good chat.  Since then I've driven past many times, just sort of keeping an eye on the Crestas.

I started a Want thread a while back, because I'd seen how much these things were going for on ebay and already knew how thin on the ground they are, especially with a Proper Gearbox.  I concluded that the best I was likely to get was the rather nice 1/43 Vanguards model (of which I have half a dozen or so...) because the real ones were so far over budget.

And then this appeared on ebay, check out the Tat Thread.  I have a friend who lives a few doors away so I asked her to find out anything she could, and it turns out the old fella had died, his son was selling off most of his old cars.  Sad, but I watched it anyway.  It didn't sell.  It ended just short of £2400, still over budget but not nearly as much as it might have been.  It did another circuit of ebay, reached the same sort of money and still didn't sell.  Subsequently my mate Mike (who provided the Omega) sent me a Facebook link on a Friday night: still available, and not a whole lot above the ebay results.

Well... what's a boy supposed to do?  Following day, Saturday, I was at the Lakeland Motor Museum for the monthly meet.  My route home took me right through Ulverston.  Of course I went round by the Cresta!  I met Son and we had a long chat.  He told me that most of the messages he'd had about the car had been from people wanting to break it for parts, and he didn't want that to happen.  His dad had owned it since 1996 and put in a LOT of work making it fit for use, and then rarely used it.  So I applied a potent mix of enthusiasm, respect and honesty, and we reached a price at which he would be happy to see it preserved.

Today was Collection Day, and I did manage to remember one of the Compulsory Elements...

At least we got a Woollard in!

I drove it home, ten miles or so of mostly main road...

...and here it is with Jazz Club.

It's taken Jazz Club's reserved space, and won't be giving it back.  New cars are expendable, you can leave them anywhere.  A 63-year-old classic is rather more important.

As a bonus, this car was first registered in Southport, where I'm from.

It is generally sound, if a bit rough around the edges.  But yes, I do have to keep looking at it.  Handy having a parking space right outside my window!
