Maxi restoring

Hi I have just bought a maxi whi h has been standing 35 years and am at the beginning of a resto, I'm not sure what I'm going for other than mechanically sound and body all repaired and rust stopped.Β  Whether I paint it in original colours or just hammerite it I don't know.

Looks excellent!

I wouldn't hammerite it mind, I've seen cars painted with it and it looks dreadfulΒ

Saw that one on Ebay - local to me and looks interesting.

Looks really original, and not actually too rotten. It would be great to keep some of the originality and patina, although I'm not sure how you could do it.Β

I wouldn't go for Hammerite either. Its original colour is so period and right for the car.

Please don't Hammerite it, it'll look shit.

If you want to paint it yourself, I have had pretty good results and good experience with 2K spraypaint/rattle cans mixed on color code.

That’s awesome!πŸ‘

I actually like that rough look it’s got. It looks very solid though at the same time. If it was mine I’d be tempted to try some of that stuff they use in America to preserve the patina - ViceGrip shine juice or Poppys Patina wipe on protection lacquer type stuff. It’s not permanent like paint but does last quite a while before needing reapplied.

Whatever you do though, it’s a great car.

or if you're local, these guysΒ https://www.middletonpanelsandpaint.co.uk/Β will mix any paint you like, and supply all the stuff you need to go with it. They'll even make up a colour matched rattle can or paint to a panel you bring in - about Β£16 for a rattle can, I think.

Another dont Hammerite it vote here - its not 1984 you know.Β  Keep as much of the patina the car wears as possible. In a world of classic car show queens /Β  big bucks rebuilds be different.

I’m in….keep it comingπŸ‘

Hated mine when I had one, but then I was only 18 and it did nothing for my image, but looking back it was just about the first modern fwd hatchback that is so common these days, so we definitely need to save a few more.Β

I think I've been convinced not to hammerite. Just got to find time to get on with it.Β Β

I think it's limeflower. Anyone got any ideas? Before I order any paint. I'm a long way from using it though.Β

The clutch is stuck in disengaged position so will probably need anew one after 35 years of being off. Any ideas where to get a kit? I've seen the diaphragm spring but not a kit

I would get it apart before buying a clutch. It will just need freeing off, and you might be lucky and find the driven plate and cover are actually OK.

There's no law that says they have to be replaced - measure the thickness of the driven plate against spec, and check the cover for wear.

If you do need parts, try Longbridge Spares:
