Why have I bought it? 

Man maths! - whatever money I may manage to make out of repairing it, I will put towards getting the bodywork done professionally on the Rover!

2003 Polo 1.4 Automatic. 67k miles on the clock. 1 owner from new!

Fairly mahoosive MOT fail, which is why I've ended up with it. Shouldn't take too long, but does need a good few hundred quids worth of parts to get it up to scratch. 

With labour costs added on it was realistically an economic write off, but my time is free* and I think it's worth it

I never said it would be exciting, but I figured it would make a good car for someone!

That's a fairly comprehensive failure list, but nothing terrifying.  For a tool wielder of your calibre, nothing too bad.  For your average motorist though, it would spell the end as even changing bulbs gives people the fear these days.

My garage landlord had one of these, the rear door failing to open from the inside is a common thing.  Because I am a chimp with 14 1/2 chromosones, I butchered the door card to reveal the release cable had come off the hook.  You too may be that lucky - but I'm sure there is a more sophisticated way to resolve the issue than hacking a door card up to do it.

It'll do someone a good turn to be honest when it's done.

I don't know for certain until it's all done and I know what it owes me and what they're worth. Considering the price of small autos, it's going to be on the cheaper end of the scale. I'd have thought a shiter would be able to expect some change from £2k  and it'll be coming freshly serviced

I'm not here to make fortunes, just enough to cover my efforts, so whatever they're worth is what I'll sell it for!

Thank you! The estimate for parts and labour was well in excess of £1k+ with the risk of the emmisions failure being caused by the cat, and pricing up a replacement door latch from TPS and the (x) number of hours to get into a deadlocked door. Understandably more than they were willing to spend on it. 

The emmisions were only just out, and it was evidently misfiring (now fixed) so fingers crossed that's all it is. But if it needs a cat as well, it won't be the end of the world

Unfortunately the door is deadlocked shut on this one, won't open from the inside or outside, having done a few before I recall there being a strategic spot to drill a hole through (in a discrete place) in order to wipe out the deadlock mechanism allowing you to open the door and then replace the failed lock unit. We shall see in good time!

Precisely my thoughts, I'll make sure it's all mechanically good and freshly serviced before it leaves with no foreseeable issues. However that's not to offer any guarantees on a 22 year old VAG vehicle!

I bought a Citroën C2 once on which the nearside door had deadlocked itself.  I persuaded* the door card off the door, then stripped a bit of insulation off all the wires running to the lock mechanism and applied 12v to each until there was a thunk and the door unlocked itself.  This may or may not work on a Polo - and you obviously know what you're doing far better than I do.
