I believe they did that with Senators too. Also the MOD bought a lot of the last Montego saloons.

Yes not many Senators were sold to private buyers, most being fleet sales for upper middle management.

I heard Rover sold the last Montegos as a job lot to the MOD, & these were later registered with P reg plates when sold on.

Sorry no pictures but just seen an F reg Series 3 XJ6 being trailered on the M62

Probably an XJ12. They kept the S3 going in 12-cylinder form for years as the V12 wouldn't fit in the XJ40 until it was re-engineered in 1992. There are J-reg S3 XJ12s out there, which look odd having such a recent plate on an old design.

A local minibus firm has this LDV Convoy on an 07 reg. The VIN indicates it was built in 2004 and sat around unregistered for three years so I guess the dealer gave them a very good deal to take it away.

The first XJ40s are on a D plate, the last six cylinder series XJ6s are on a C. S3 XJ12s are fairly uncommon, the V12s tend to be Daimlers. IIRC it was because Jaguar couldn't work out a way to put the HE V12 into an XJ40.

The S3 V12 was in production until December 1992, the last one belongs to the Jaguar and Daimler Heritage Trust. Similarly, the final DS420 made was L reg.

Side note: the S3 XJ in Shaun of the Dead is an XJ12 Sovereign on a C plate. However it was most likely resprayed for the film, as it's debadged, and it's non-metallic BRG with a matching interior, which wasn't offered.  Further, it comes back on the V5 as being silver (which would have been a deep metallic), which would make sense with the contrasting dark green interior. Sovereigns had metallic paint as standard and the interior usually contrasted the paint, rather than matching it.

Back in late 1993 I had some money burning a hole after working abroad and was kicking the tyres at a specialist independent dealers in Cheshire. They had a VW Golf GTI on an L-Reg. Not unusual, but this was a Mk2 pre-big bumper model, so built before 1990, so basically registered at least 3 years after it was built.

That's an Isle of man registration, I'm not certain but I think it's the first letter that indicates the age not the U. I believe the current system was introduced in the mid 1980s with AMN 1A, then when it got To AMN 999A it went to BMN 1A to BMN 999A etc so CMN 945U would be issued mid to late 90s.

Isle of Man was up to NMN when I was there Sep 2018. But it looked like quite a lot of people transfer the older marks eg there were some that started MAN and had up to four numbers.

In 1979 I had a summer holiday job at a BL dealership in the leafy Surrey suburbs. My job was to prepare cars for sale. The dealership stored new cars on a farm a few miles away until they had a buyer. Normally I would steam off the waxy stuff and then clean all the glue off the carpets. One of the cars I had to prepare was a “new” Toledo which had been sold as a new car but had been on the farm for at least 2 years. They stopped making them in 76. I didn’t have to clean any wax off it. Only mud and rust. It went out with a V reg which must be pretty unique but I doubt it’s around now.

That's a bizarre one, comes up as a "Middlebridge" on Doovla

Middlebridge bought for manufacturing rights when the Scimirar went out of production at Reliant. I guess they’re technically kit cars?

There’s more info at their register here http://middlebridge-scimitar.co.uk/
