I have a copy (courtesy of @Spottedlaurel) of the March 1975 What Car? where they did a Simca 1100 v Renault 6 road test, the Simca won that one and I'd be curious to see how they compare 50 years later.

I've had a word but still can't persuade the management that revisiting this test would be good news for SEO.

Spain is in the process of shutting its doors to the none Schengen types. Currently the buy house get visa and settle is a route, soon will be visa, visa visa if you’re lucky.

@Jerzy Woking will be up in Spain I can certainly assist with France.

Doesn't this also apply to Malta and possibly Cyprus where you can buy 'Golden Visas'?

Much used by russian bods

As someone who has the option of a free car in Malaga, but has yet to find the time and cajones to actually do such a mission, I totally applaud this and will be watching with interest.

Bon voyage / Buen viaje / Gute Reise (in case you get lost)

Just debating whether to buy a head gasket set and take it with me. Can't see myself doing the HG in Leclerc's car park but a water pump, thermostat or inlet manifold gasket might just 'come in'. Or am i just being paranoid? It's light and easily 'backpackable' at least

If you can carry it with you it will not need carrying once you get to the car.  Seems like a reasonable compromise when you don't know the parts availability when you get there.

I’d say yes.  Even if you’re not in the mood to grapple with a timing chain, there’s a chance that a garage might do some work if you’ve got the spare parts.

I bet that a few years ago you could pick up a set of carburettor jets from the local Leclerc

Just a thought. If you are passing some of these out of the way garages or car spares shops, would it be worth your while to call in a see if they had any old stock on the shelves? I know it's a long shot, but it may just turn up a master cylinder, a clutch, wheel bearings, or brakes. Just an idea.

I wouldn't - any fault that will require you to use bits out of a head set will not be a fault you can fix without additional parts.

I'd probably take a basic tool kit, plus ignition consumables and maybe a carb jet tool and an inline fuel filter. I'd accept that anything more complex would need a tow to the local garagiste.

Is it worth making contact with the "Club Simca France" ? If there's a group of people who can advise on local specialists and parts sources, it's bound to be them !

Shite island strikes again!!!! The home-Peterborough leg of my train to Stansted is now cancelled, thanks to strikes that have been going on for almost 2 years now and are so frequent that they don't even feature on the news any more. Zero trains to Peterborough on that day now. Le sigh.

If all else fails I'll be leaving my Volvo at Peterborough station for 4 days with the A-frame in the boot I suppose. I'll keep my cancelled train ticket to show to VOSA in case of a tug 🙄

I've been trying to find it myself to no avail, but I remember it back in the day.

Ordinarily I wouldn't say this as it would spoil the surprise, but the welding and fabrication is a solid order of magnitude worse than you could ever imagine

Here you go. I posted this on page one of the thread- the van we dragged out must have been rare by that point.

https://forum.retro-rides.org/thread/135621/84-talbot-simca-1100-pickup

The photos stir memories of when I helped out at a garage years back ; my workmate asked me to give him a hand to drag a 'rotten old van' from the owners orchard to the scrapyard. It was a Simca van, absolutely rotten as a pear and was only 12 years old at the time - scary!

Can I just say now that Ms Dollywobbler suggested we do a Spanish collection caper some time ago and we're not nicking the idea. Only thing putting me off is the question of imports now we're post-Brexit. It was so bloody simple with the Mighty Dacia.

Like most stuff post Brexit (excluding living/working in Europe of course), its still doable, it just costs shitloads more than it used to.

WOW! Perforated welding...

I've just had a quick look through that link to the thread... fascinating and scary at the same time. To think there were posts of encouragement.

Anyway, sorry for the derail.

You have to have some money and apply for a visa but it seems the answer is pretty much, yes.

https://iasservices.org.uk/moving-to-portugal-from-the-uk/

D7 visa needs income which happens to be less than Brit basic pension.  Cars are expensive due to tax and the low (for EU) avarage income so older cars are in daily use - Algarve is almost separate country
