Spain is in the process of shutting its doors to the none Schengen types. Currently the buy house get visa and settle is a route, soon will be visa, visa visa if you’re lucky.

I’d say yes.  Even if you’re not in the mood to grapple with a timing chain, there’s a chance that a garage might do some work if you’ve got the spare parts.

I bet that a few years ago you could pick up a set of carburettor jets from the local Leclerc

Just a thought. If you are passing some of these out of the way garages or car spares shops, would it be worth your while to call in a see if they had any old stock on the shelves? I know it's a long shot, but it may just turn up a master cylinder, a clutch, wheel bearings, or brakes. Just an idea.

I wouldn't - any fault that will require you to use bits out of a head set will not be a fault you can fix without additional parts.

I'd probably take a basic tool kit, plus ignition consumables and maybe a carb jet tool and an inline fuel filter. I'd accept that anything more complex would need a tow to the local garagiste.

Is it worth making contact with the "Club Simca France" ? If there's a group of people who can advise on local specialists and parts sources, it's bound to be them !

Shite island strikes again!!!! The home-Peterborough leg of my train to Stansted is now cancelled, thanks to strikes that have been going on for almost 2 years now and are so frequent that they don't even feature on the news any more. Zero trains to Peterborough on that day now. Le sigh.

If all else fails I'll be leaving my Volvo at Peterborough station for 4 days with the A-frame in the boot I suppose. I'll keep my cancelled train ticket to show to VOSA in case of a tug 🙄

The photos stir memories of when I helped out at a garage years back ; my workmate asked me to give him a hand to drag a 'rotten old van' from the owners orchard to the scrapyard. It was a Simca van, absolutely rotten as a pear and was only 12 years old at the time - scary!

D7 visa needs income which happens to be less than Brit basic pension.  Cars are expensive due to tax and the low (for EU) avarage income so older cars are in daily use - Algarve is almost separate country
