Where did Anne Naysmith’s Ford Consul go?

Thanks @LightBulbFun. Either way it looks like there was 100% a change of owner in 2005, when the car would’ve still be worth something. It would be like going and buying a late 70s unrestored cortina just now.

I don’t think the car got dodgy mots every year, even in recent years and on a main truck road our equivalent man in Scotland lived in his car in Scotland managed a couple of years after the mot and tax expired on his Mercedes before the police removed it
https://www.scotsman.com/regions/dundee-and-tayside/man-who-camped-on-a9-for-three-years-evicted-1493996

He was known to the police and understandably violent about being moved. A more innocent older lady on a quieter road, with good relationships with some of the neighbours, made a good tomato chutney etc would’ve been able to keep the car a lot longer on the road without a mot. The photos of the car are later on in its time with her (so early 00s) which show it to be hanging/rusty, but it could’ve still been motd / taxed in the 80s and most of the 90s. Also back then there was less social media, no camera phones, no easy way of checking if a car had a mot, no anpr cameras and rules about being continually insured or whatever.

In terms of age it would be like buying a Cortina, but I don't think a 1961 Consul in 2005 was worth as much as a 1979 Cortina today. Classic Ford has had a big boom since then

This car no longer exists.

That has zero qualities of a car for restoration. Extensive panel damage, rust, no glass, missing trim, ruined interior. It wouldn't even make a parts car, aside for potentially the running gear.

Worth of a mint Consul in 2005 was maybe £5k, even today with them being worth twice that better Consuls than that go in the bailer.

I suspect it's more likely somebody is doing something dodgy to keep the no. plate alive for resale

As our old friend Junkman would have said, it's fucked. It's a miracle the council got it on the transporter in one piece as it looks like it could break in half the moment they tried to move it from the spot it had been rooted to for 30-odd years. It would surely have been taken straight to the nearest scrapyard and fed into the baler, simply to prevent any chance of Anne getting it back, and I can't see the council wanting the hassle of storing and attempting to sell such a disgusting old heap that was no doubt a health hazard. It was probably dead within an hour of being scooped up and before Anne even knew it was gone.

It would still show up on the MID if it was on a trade policy.

Not if my understanding of a traders policy is still right.  The business with the policy can drive any car in their ownership or whilst in their possession. The reg nos aren’t listed anywhere on the policy as in many cases they can literally change daily.

Unless these policies have changed since I was in the trade, although hard to see how they could when you could easily drive a dozen different customers cars every day.

im pretty sure when a vehicle is siezed the recovery company has to provide owners with a chance to collect there personal effects from a vehicle? although the envelope taped to the windscreen may have said it would be destroyed and remove all your effects before its removed. after all we dont know who the company was that removed it so we dont know where it went.  maybe someone kept a number plate as a keepsake, but keeping a vin is dodgy!

If someone owns the car and is using their trade policy to keep it insured then it would be expected to show on the MID, as your policy normally requires you to update the MID with your ‘stock’ so that they can keep track of what you’ve got - my tradex policy definitely required this.

Yes, if it was being picked up and test driven/delivered to an MOT etc. at the bequest of a customer then you wouldn’t add it to your policy and it wouldn’t show on MID if the owner didn’t have it insured, but that doesn’t get round the question of why the DVLA aren’t chasing the registered keeper for taxing a car with no insurance.

I got in the shit with the DVLA a couple of months ago for having no insurance on a taxed car that was crashed and has since been laid up in a field… I should’ve marked it SORN but was too lazy and disorganised to sort it and was confident they wouldn’t chase me up as they do fuck all about expired tax. Turns out they definitely do come after you under their continuous insurance requirement!

You could get a much better Consul than Anne's, i.e. a going concern that was just about roadworthy, for under a grand twenty years ago.  Twice that would buy you something quite nice and even Zephyrs and Zodiacs were quite cheap.  The only old Fords worth anything back then had Cosworth badges.

From RBJ:

The Consul in question was a LHD export model and upon removal, was taken to a scrapyard in West Drayton - now closed. It was in the compound for a couple of months before being crushed. I saw it a couple of times - it pretty much fell to bits when the grab picked it up to drop it into the crusher.

Twenty years ago standard Sierra Cosworths were right at the bottom of their depreciation bell curves and unless in perfect condition were worth more in parts than as a whole, especially if the engine was any good. Most had the arse modified out of them because they were cheap fast cars which the Max Power readership could afford to buy and occasionally insure.

Even back in 2010, when I sold mine, they were a bit unfashionable and values stubbornly low. I let it go for 3 grand, which was not one of my better decisions but at the time I couldn't convince myself it would be anything other than a future money pit.

I would have to ask then why this was not done already? it would of been way easier to plate rob it in 2005 then it would be now in 2024, the DVLA have very much tightened up the process in the 20 years

interesting are there any pictures showing it LHD or at the yard? I am curious given how long it had been parked up for if there are any historic photos showing it in the late 70's or 80's?

googling the reg number just brings up this thread for the most part LOL

It would be great to see any older pics of it. The thing is even in 2002, it wasn’t that unusual to stumble across some old 50s chodbox parked on the street, nor find people sleeping in their cars, and this one was off the beaten track a bit. Taking the above article at face value if it wasn’t for the new nimby in the area it might have stayed put a while longer. I well remember people living in their cars on the seafront, a mix of homeless and workers away from home saving on digs.

There’s a house round the corner from my parents that has featured on here before. ‘69 Transit rotting into the road, two fifties yanks and a ur Quattro on the drive in comparable “naysmith” condition full of cats and rubbish. Part of me hopes they will be there for years to come, but I don’t have to look or smell them every day.

my mates dad had a m2 scrote estate that he put hardboard in the rear windows and hand painted the thing two tone red and blue, it did look tidy! if i remember right that was either replaced by a marina van then a bedford cf! they also had at one time the only ever fiat strada i have seen in the metal, i say metal but im sure the bonnet was fibreglass or some sort of plastic....

also it would be rather uncommon for a left hand drive car to be sold in the uk back then? was it confirmed as a  lhd?

I hope that roll of shame included the grassing twat of a neighbour and the wankers who set the Mercedes alight, if they knew who they were.

It occurred to me how much Anne's Consul has in common with Ford Timelord. Both were LHD Fords registered in the UK from new, had GU plates, had eccentric owners, lived in London and deteriorated into a bad state, and are recorded by the DVLA as still existing despite disappearing decades ago.

Incidentally, the verse on the side of the Consul is from Dacre's 'I'll be Your Sweetheart', an 1899 music hall number.

Thanks, that was stuck in my head.
