Its probably just that this thing was off the road before the online MoT database thing got going in 2006 or whenever, but is it possible that just maybe it was parked up before the first test fell due at three years old?

I remember these when they were new. Really cheap and proper shite. I mean, proper, proper shite. Made an 80's Skoda look like a kwality motor. I'm surprised it has survived this long.

I remember them quite well, as above they made the Lada look quality. The MOT suggests that it didn’t make its first test, it could well have been part of a deceased estate and pulled out of a garage.

Both of mine topped the ton and took a good thrashing both on and off road, even managed to haul 13 passengers in it and regularly  had firewood stacked to the roof,  it really got no mercy at all and I sold it to see it regularly towing a caravan for the following two years before it just disappeared. 

Wonder how much this will fetch ?  I must admit I'm a little tempted 🤔

If the Classic auction is the same as the Modern auction there - if you cannot attend in person then its £400 down on a card to bid. I was 'in' last night's auction and the £400 is 'pending' as a refund back on my card this morning.
Costs nothing to watch tho' and you cannot get an itchy trigger finger .....

It is certainly possible, but I think it's more likely that it just hasn't been for an MOT since 2005 

 

The information on the MOT check site doesn't indicate either way so using that as a source just means we speculate

They do have people in on classic auction days. Not sure if it is restricted numbers.

Pre covid it used to get packed out.

I remember old auctions where the crowd all get gassed out by a smokey old banger.

It’s an interesting old thing but £400 is tops, you’ll be competing with the banger racers at that money as well.

I seem to remember, many, many years ago, there was someone who found a load of these that were supposed to go to Africa and for some reason the deal fell through. They had sat at the docks for years. He was selling them off. Brand-new, left-hand drive, £1250. I looked at them for about 5 seconds and thought, nah, no thanks.

You can still turn up on the day and bid - they finessed a half decent online bidding setup during Covid that they've retained.
Others (looking at Brighwell's in particular) have done weird things like viewing over two days but timed ending on internet bids only - must work for them I guess.

I think a fair few ended up on the minicab circuits in the fashion of the Hyundai Stellar, a big car you could probably pick up for practically nothing. I recall the Caro being no more than £5-6k, I’ll have to check contemporary price guides for the exact values.

A RHD MK1 will probably go for  over a grand.  One pulled out of a garage last year was up on FB for a grand and sold within ten minutes with about 20 other people trying to contact the seller within an hour.

It's £500 for the classic auction, or at least it was last time I went.  And it's the same whether you're bidding online or there in person.

Brightwells is £2500 for the Classics - bit of a piss take maybe but helps define their target audience maybe?

Sadly it's got "oval" written in big letters as well. I hope I'm wrong as I'd love to see that saved. Can't imagine anyone doing it though, unless it goes back to Poland but I don't know how easy that is post-Brexit. I had a Caro years ago and it was surprisingly entertaining (to me anyway). I regretted selling it and found another in worse condition. It blew its head gasket and I lost interest. It ended up back in Poland where to my delight it was fully restored. Be interesting to see what this one makes though.

That's going to take a very brave person to restore.  These things rusted way worse than Ladas, and if it's that crispy where we can see it, goodness only knows what the underside looks like.

I'd love to see it saved as I've always had a big soft spot for those cars and regret never having owned one when they were cheap as chips, though that's largely because they were basically extinct by the time I was driving and £100 Ladas were still pretty easy to find.  The couple that I did look at were absolutely catastrophically rotten and they looked far better than this one.

I reckon that the most value there is likely to be in the RHD specific bits of steering/suspension gear and trim - I'm assuming as with Ladas those parts are made of pure unobtanium, despite the other 99.93% of the parts of the car being readily available for pennies.  Sadly it's likely to be worth more to someone as something oddball/funny to race than it's going to be as a spares source for somebody.
