Wtf is going on with car insurance prices?

Replaced the wife’s diesel Bini with a newer hybrid one. The old one was insurance group 16 , the new one is 26, so I expected at least £100 a year increase , so pro-rata , thought it would be maybe £70 ish for the rest of the year. 
The exact increase? 1p. I asked them if they were seriously going to collect 1p which would presumably cost a few pounds to process, and I was told ( to paraphrase) “ computer says yes!”

Renewal would have been about 25% more than last year. Cover with a different insurer was 25% less than last year.

I mean, if you were really devious, you could just buy a really cheap to insure runaround to stick the main policy on, buy the car you want but they are giving you a 'WTF LOL NO' price on then insure that as a 2nd car for near half the cost and probably end up saving about £400 all in AND have a 2nd car to use, effectively insured for nothing....

Which broker/site are you using - I'm finding online stuff a bit hit and miss?
I have full NCB on one car and one <7.5 tonner but neither are cutting much ice  at the moment on a third one (a lot of the sites don't even have anywhere to tell them the NCB details on the other vehicles)

For me personally, online and for just the normal sorts of cars, the Meerkats (comparethemarket) is usually the cheapest. Normally if i put the same details into confused, gocompare, the same insurers are coming back with quotes £50-80 a year more. (They have the access to other cars section, NCB on other cars etc, so it opens that door as well).

I have also had some success with quotegoat on some more specialised/modified things.  When i get a 'LOL NOPE' price via the normal sites (sometimes because it has a couple of mods/non standard wheels or something), running a quote through that nearly always seems to virtually half what the run of the mill places are willing to quote. Pretty sure that's where i got a quote on a Discovery with a ton of mods for £530 as a 2nd car, when as a main car it was £900, and via the standard sites, £1700.

Have recently been on the receiving end of a dry bumming for the Berlingo renewal. We've had between me and the mrs 4 none fault happenings this last year 3 of which are still ongoing. Have also been awarded 3 points for making swift progress. It could be something to do with these factors though I feel it's largely to do with the fact that they're robbing bastards who we are legally obliged to provide profit for.

He said"What about the hire car?"

"Oh, you've still got that? Keep it until the other insurers sort it out.... It'll be a few weeks yet."

 

The car is maybe £120 a day. 🙄 it's already been two weeks.

Renewal on my 2001 Clio 1.2 from Saga today, named driver only, fully comp, social domestic and pleasure, not covered for travelling to and from work, vehicle parked on my drive overnight, mileage 4000 per year.

Premium has risen to £484 an increase of £87 from last year which was at the time around £200 cheaper than the next cheapest quote.

I did a compare the market check last week, cheapest quote was £637 from Admiral, next cheapest £831 from Liverpool Victoria. I'm 76, full no claims bonus, no previous motoring convictions.

Not a bad price for someone of my age, so I'll be renewing with Saga again.

I doubt if insurance companies pay anything like the rates we would get a hire car for. A big chunk of car hire cost is insurance , I presume insurance companies cover that themselves and big discounts as a “bulk” user. It will be well under £50.

I was in disbelief at the insurance costs my friend was quoted over the past few days.

Context - 30, driving for about 10 years, probably 7 or so years NCD, does about 20k a year, two claims but protected NCB (one break in and one her fault that's just been written off) - was paying about 5-600 on her previous 2008 1.6 diesel.

C4 1.6 diesel, everything declared - £700.
308 2.0 diesel, 400cc and 20bhp more - £1500+.

I expect some increase but I was amazed at how much the little difference in power and size meant, but also how little an effect the claims have had.

They're doing it again to me, massive, massive premium added to a quote for a car that's local and popped up for sale cheap v an identical one further away and more expensive.

£580 for the expensive one 300 miles away, £755 for the local one. Same year, same model, trim, engine, colour... identical. There should be no difference, it's the same car yet constantly i find there is. All the animals are equal but some are more equal that others.

It's quite clear they know what is for sale and what it's priced at, the online sales portals pings the MID and some kind of 'cheap car' premium is added on backstage. 'Oh this car is well priced v market average = you'll be more careless with it, or if you save money here, you'll have a bit more to give us, kerching'.

I.e they're just gouging cunts.

I've also had this work the exact opposite way as well, car that's pretty rare these days, no real current day market data for what it's worth, sees a car deemed 'overpriced' as a result = massive drop in premium, i assume because like the cheap car tax they add on, they see something overpriced as it presumably going to be some kind of pristine example that's going to be babied and will give a fairly reasonable quote. But heaven forbid you get a bargain....

And in further exciting news. Although they've agreed to agree a value, they've decided that the maximum is £20,000 as opposed to the 30k I've had for the last 2 years and 25k for however long before that.

I mentioned at the beginning of March that the renewal for the Rover 45 had gone up from £287 to £406 . After consulting the meerkats I got it down to £240, which means that the three cars I've renewed the insurance on this year have cost around £50 less than they did last year. 🙂

Renewal for my XF from Churchill, two drivers, business use £368.67.  Up by £141.86 or a 62% increase on last year.  Easy to say FRO as they badly let me down on another car, so went with 1st Central, who all the comparison sites seem to be in bed with for me, for £280.05.  To be fair, I would have went with anyone to avoid UK Insurance group.

I've done a year with 1st central and they were OK. Didn't need to claim though 😂 Sadly they decided to offer me a stupid price this year so weren't chosen to provide me a space on MID in exchange for ££

Renewal offer has just landed from Hagerty for the Invacar, Rover P6 and Trabant.  £244.  Which I think is +/-50 of what it's always been for this policy irrespective of what vehicles are involved - the exception being the briefly present Merc W123 which brought with it a massive price hike.

In contrast, the Partner is currently costing roughly £700 a year.  Historically I've been the only user, though due to management nonsense one of my housemates now needs to do a 5 hour round trip to their Telford office once every three weeks to sit at a computer on a teams call to the same co-workers who are based at the opposite end of the country they do every other day from home every three weeks.

Adding them as a named driver doesn't make a massive difference to the price, however 1st Central can only offer her business & commuting cover if I also add it for myself, then also adding them.  Resulting quote? £2754 please.

Haven't been able to find anything much cheaper elsewhere - so she's just buying short term insurance a day at a time for £15-30 a go as it works out considerably cheaper, which seems like madness.

I just renewed mine. Year before last, 290, last year 320 this year 380.

I did some checking myself and was getting quotes of nearly a grand. Absolutely fucking ridiculous.

Our cars are insured on a multicar policy with LV. Last year's price was just over £370 and this year's price is just over £600. 

I've spent some time on the Admiral multicar quote page but it's crashed a couple of times and then said I need to call them as I changed a parameter. 

Then I tried Aviva multicar and that came in at just over £840. 

I'm knocking on the door of 50 years old and we both have years of protected NCD. 

I'm starting to think the LV automatic quote wasn't so bad! 

I think I'll call them after work tomorrow and see if they can wriggle on the price. Still mucking fental though. I'm used to paying similar ££ each year, being a decent driver and not having to take massive price hikes on the chin. Clearly things have changed...

Edit: Just used Compare the market and they have given me a quote with a Hastings Direct multicar policy for a smidge over £560. Hastings also had a cheaper product for around £540 although it looked too stripped back to be useful. 

Hopefully this will be a useful bargaining tool for when I try and negotiate with LV tomorrow.

Renewal arrived in my inbox today for my humble Dacia Logan. They'd jacked up the price by 60%!

A quick nosey at the comparison sites shows there's zero bargains to be had elsewhere. the nearest half-decent cover is still £40 more than I paid last year.

Not sure what's going on, but after all the issues i've had with insurance quotes lately, i've suddenly found the prices have come down for me.

Except if i want to buy a car at the weekend. Y'know, when buying a car is probably most convenient. Because that turns everyone into a ram raider or something.

Had a quote on something for £530, which is about as good as i see on a modern. As long as it was insured on a weekday. Weekend? £740 for Saturday, £725 for Sunday m8. Cunts.

I held off because of that (didn't want to just pull the trigger insuring a car i hadn't even been to look at yet, it had been up for sale for a week so didn't figure there was any reason it'd suddenly go.... i was wrong, of course it did.) and missed out on yet another car. FFS.

Lesson being, buy a car by all means at the weekend, but either insure it on the Friday with immediate effect a day early, or utilise temp insurance to get it home, then have a policy ready to kick in on Monday.

Just had a renewal quote for the silver BMW (2018 320D value £11,000 and 7,000 miles per year) from Hastings Direct - £1150. Fuck that, had a search around and got a quote from go skippy 🤷‍♂️ for £380 which is much more palatable. So pressed the trigger. Upon checking the docs the shower of shit have removed my ability to drive any insured car in the UK third party only.

Reason I post this is the fact that RAC pulled the same trick on me 15 years ago and during a (highly legal) random stop by the police it turned out I was not insured for the car I was driving at the time (even though it was mine but insured in my wife's name) - cue £250 fine and 6 points.

Moral, if you get the cheap* insurance check the wording very carefully
