The £600k Sierra.

Granted it is a Cossie 500 and a nice one, but even so!

For anyone not in touch with motoring matters over the weekend a Sierra Cosworth RS500 was sold at Silverstone auctions on Sat for £596.250 including fees. Personally I think it's madness but then watched a YT vid that changed my mind. Unbelievably this could actually be a very astute investment!!1

It's a shame but sadly inevitable that it ended up like this, especially as it's an RS500.

To be fair as a kid I was glued to the touring cars every weekend watching these things spitting flames. I get why they are coveted. 

It's easy to bash the Ford scene as a lot of stuff they made was dross, Cossies are fooking ace though.

I'm more of a Sapphire fan being a rallyist at heart, one of those went for nearly £100k at the same auction 😳

I get the Silverstone catalogues through the post for some reason and keep them for my father in law to read as they have some gorgeous photos of the cars surrounded by a load of bollocks wording.
They are not cars for driving in the same way that the fancy wine in the wine auctions is not for drinking - each to their own. That car is probably now living under a dust cover in an air conditioned/heated storage facility - beyond my ken for sure.

At that price is it really an investment? Do we think that in 10 years time it’ll be sold for £1.2million? I think these prices spoil it for the ordinary man who really wants one. Price? Now out of reach, sorry pal. Similar happens in all the clubs. The price I payed for my Manta in 2007 was affordable, fast forward 16 years and to buy one now is not. Such a shame. Unless you have cash floating around.

As others said, it’s a shame because it’s cases like this that push the prices up on them all then ‘average Joe’ can’t afford these things anymore. 
That car isn’t a car anymore either. It’s not likely to be used and enjoyed like it should be or was intended to be originally. It’s an investment. Besides that, would any insurance companies insure the thing now given its ‘value’?? 
Nice to see there’s so much cash in some people’s pockets though!😄

Auctions are great fun when you get two folks going after the one item, all the others drop out and then the auctioneer's head is like somebody watching Wimbledon - left, right, left right - before you know it £600K - I don't think I could afford even the buyer's premium on that price

Aye, there was a few things that seemed to be "cheap" compared to others. Was the other Cossie modded or rotten maybe? Competition stuff does seem cheaper that the shiny shiny collectors stuff, and you'd be happier using it as it's not perfect.

The 1200 mile 1986 Ford RS200 S that sold for £315,000 at the same auction seems a much more desirable car at almost half the price of the Sierra RS500. Big ears!

Late last year I was at the car test center,having my Golf inspected.

Got talking to a guy there that had an 09 Focus RS in lurid green,it was back being tested for emissions for the third time.

The thing only had 3K on it,it was crying out for a good Italian tune up!!

If you can't use a car as intended,then there is no point in owning it!

I mean what possible use is it now? As above it’s an exhibit, it can’t possibly be used as it was intended anymore, you couldn’t take it out on a Sunday and do even the merest wheelspin out of a pub car park. I mean what it got stone chipped or scratched. Or if it rained.

Probably an unpopular opinion but it would have been less sad if it had been bastardised with some modifications or had its bollocks ripped off every weekend on a track day.

One explanation could be someone has won big on the lottery and wants to relive the 80s? If I’d won big like that I’d buy it then chuck 10k miles on it in the first few months batting it round the country lanes enjoying it.

Best me to it, you could get an Rs200 an Escort Cossie and a Saph Cossie for less.

Would I have it over most brand new hypercars? Sure. Would I rather have one I could use and enjoy or a race car with history? Absolutely.

It's an awful lot of money to enjoy the aesthetic beauty of a Sierra dashboard.

Will be interesting to see where it goes from here given the gap to the next highest price car. I'm sure it'll bring values up, but I have to think the fast Ford perverts are getting old and they won't rise forever.

If I had one I'd want everyone seeing it, everyone wanting to talk to me about it and admiring it at the petrol station or in Morrisons car park.

A mate of mine I used to work with bought a genuine Capri RS3100, halves with his brother. Back then they were worth bugger all like any old end of life Capri at the time. They spent a couple of years ragging it around between them. It became seriously rusty so it failed it’s MOT and got weighed in.

I always remind him of how much those cars are worth nowadays of course! 
Mind you even that pales into insignificance considering the price of this Sierra.

I could buy 6 genuine Manta 400 rally cars with that much coin. I’d be a much happier man than owning 1 Sierra that can’t be used 🤣
