The grumpy thread

There are reasons I won't collect it as a third car, the main one is a lack of sufficient funds, the minor one is a lack of space (though it could go where the BX briefly lived) and Conrad's point which is quite valid.

No, I'm going to be good and I'm only going to get the bits I actually need. I'm not collecting a third one... yet.

Left my car in a car park, and came back after half and hour to find it missing one chevron.

Why do something so stupid and pointless?

I was told by a ex racer that the calipers on the old Princess and Ambassadors were worth mega bucks as they were more powerful than normal ones and would fit a lot of 70's stuff used for racing?. I recall him saying they were worth more than the cars at the time (although this must be getting on for 15 years ago)

Correct, Princess had four-pot calipers made by AP. They were a popular performance upgrade in the 1980s and 1990s, but more or less obsolete nowadays.

Crikey, snagging parts off BL stuff to make your car stop better. Although I do recall people used to put SD1 brakes on Datsun 240Zs, to make them stop better.

Inspired by Vulgalour's Princess heroics, I decided I would set about stripping the dashboard out of my Sceptre so that I could do something with the shagged veneer.

So far, so good then.

Unfortunately though, unlike Vulgalour, I'm not actually very good at anything, so it didn't take long for me to come up against a problem in the form of this conundrum.

I know, I'll just take apart the glove box opening mechanism, take the wood panel off, and then put it all back together.

Can I work out how to put the bastard thing back together so it actually works? Can I bollocks.

FUCKING FUCK.

Of course not. That would have been far too sensible.

I will not be held responsible for your actions.  You've only yourself to blame.  Just so you know, the HLS dash insert is taking FOREVER to clean up but it is cleaning up nicely.  Gonna look lovely when it's all revarnished and back together in a week or so.

To the driver of the black Audi with the reg plate ending 'NFG' on the M56 earlier: hand the keys in son, you're either pissed or tired, but you definitely cannot drive well enough to have a full licence.

Too many games diluting the money... no one gives a monkey's about winning a million when you can pay the £2.00 already for the Euromillions.

National Lottery = a tax on the poor

Not just the poor.

Its a hope tax.

Dont forget, the rich are greedy too.

Well, I might as well go ahead and buy a new water pump for the Rover now, seeing as I've just purged the cooling system by driving 9 miles with the header tank lid sat on the inner wing, it held itself together until I performed a 10-point turn outside my house to park up and then boiling coolant erupted quite impressively all over the road.  Luckily the lid stayed put and the engine didn't overheat which is why I didn't notice until I stopped.  What a muppet.

Posted

I was a similar dick a few weeks back when I left the lid off the Sierra's header tank and then lost it on a trip to the shops. I must have left it on top of the engine and it fell off during some high speed cornering on my way to Sainsburys. It was bound to happen seeing as I'm topping it up on a weekly basis these days.

Posted

I have no idea why I didn't replace the lid other than it was dark and hard to see under the bonnet, I'm lucky it stayed put and that the car didn't overheat.  Ironically, it didn't actually need topping up anyway.  It certainly does now.

I was a dick when checking the coolant in the XM after 90 miles of motorway. It was leaking like fuck due to a shagged header cap, but had behaved itself the whole journey so far. Of course, I dont trust this so pulled over, had a fag and thought "oooh, I'll just check the level". Undid the cap which shot out along with 3 litres of boiling hot oily shitty coolant which proceeded to cover me and ruin my nice shorts I had on.

Missus just stood there tutting and lit me another fag. Filled it back up and watched the gague like a hawk as I didnt bleed it or anything, just topped up and went back to doing 85-90 to camber sands! Was fine!

On the older SU carbs, the needle valve can be accessed in about three seconds. Remove float chamber lid, done. On the HiF38, the float chamber is integral and underneath, so you have to remove the entire carb (four pipes and two linkages), tip it upside down (all the petrol and oil spills out) and then you've got to remove a bit of the jet assembly if you want to remove the needle housing bit too.

I have a fierce headache, that was not something I wanted to do today.

I'm no particular fan of Ed Miliband or of radical Marxist academics like his father, but I think he's got a point here.

I've always thought it quite indefensibly shit to launch character assassinations against those who, by virtue of the fact they are no longer alive, are not in a position to defend themselves.

Conrad, you have my sympathies.  That design of SU Carbs is stupid even without the headache and I avoid fiddling with them as much as possible.

Because they fall off often, so someone has nicked yours for theirs, is it a normal Xsara? We might have that bit of grille at work.

I'm confused by photos of Mondeo speedos being posted on the AS facebook group by a man in drag?
