The grumpy thread

I've just realised my insurance expires tomorrow night at midnight. No reminder from FJ, nothing at all from them of late.

Looks like I'll be spending a bit of time on the phone tomorrow trying to re-insure the fleet.

It had me tearing my hair out too, until I found the answer on another forum.

When you have to change a headlamp bulb, and C5s eat them so it won't be long, my advice is not to even try and do them in situ (although the passenger side isn't too bad if you remove the battery). It's not that hard to release one side of the bumper and undo the three bolts that hold the headlamp unit in.

Ahh....Something else to look forward to then!

Thanks for the advice!

Same here - I can after much practice change the bulbs with only minor, non-fatal injuries but the nearside indicator is buggered, tested the bulb and its holder and they are fine so it has to be the headlamp unit or connector so a bumper off job. Not too bad a job except the car has been crashed at some point so the fittings will be a complete bodge and the whole front end will probably collapse when the first bolt (or more likely self tapper/cable tie) is removed.

In that case, you've nothing to lose. Get the motherboard out and put it in the oven.

If you blow yourself up......

What make and model is it? My place can often do a reball of the GPU for less than a hundred quid. In fact often closer to fifty but it depends on the model.

There are some models they won't touch though since they're known for never working properly again (HP DV9000 series, I'm looking at you) and since there's a short warranty on offer, they go into a state of being constantly sent backwards and forwards.

You can drop it in to a Currys for a fault'n'fix repair - £50 uplift and inspection, plus parts. If the "parts" are component work, there's just a small charge for that.

Give me a couple of days and I'll find out what they normally do on these, and how much a mainboard is in case it can't be reflowed. You don't get the £50 back if you decide not to go ahead with the repair, you DO get it back if we deem it unrepairable through lack of parts.

Must admit I've not heard of the G60 suffering from GPU failures, back in the day when they were new we used to endlessly replace mainboard and CPU pairs though. Has it got an AMD processor? There's an "interesting" fault where the metal used in the processor socket reacts to the gold used on the processor pins on AMD and oxidises..... sometimes reseating the processor works for a while. Replacement of both MB and CPU is the HP recommended fix for this.

What you can do sometimes is plug it in, turn it on, unplug the CMOS battery (under the large door on the bottom if memory serves) and leave it "not working" for a few hours. We had a surprising number just burst into life doing this, we never worked out why but at £5 per job we weren't complaining!

Sunday drivers, and Sunday cyclists, are what's really irritating me today

Getting cut up on my way to work on the approach to one particular roundabout by executive motors, even if I haven't overtaken them earlier on the bypass. If I have overtaken them previously, the cutting up is really quite scaring requiring much application of brakes and at least one occasion of considering evasive action. Best of all, one of the people that did it to me works in the same office and outside of his car is a really nice bloke, but woe betide the crusty blue Maestro that DARED to go past him on an open road when other people could see it.

Ah well, I'll just keep on increasing my stopping distances I guess.

Or you could get a blown O Series from a scrapyard, install it in Steve and leave office boy's PremiumTrendline PuntCunt A3 for dead. It's all good.

Just don't let middle management sales executives out at junctions in traffic.

Cycling shit-storm on Facebook.

I know.... they need to look around themselves a bit... they're the vulnerable ones, so need to protect themselves. We're alright in our tin boxes.

Start a thread on it, perhaps title it 'Good threads, bad threads, accident threads' then stick some pictures of Christmas trees up. Word of warning though, don't leave yourself open to allegations of the use of force or coercion to abuse or intimidate others. The behaviour can be habitual and involve an imbalance of social or physical power and it can include verbal harassment or threat, physical assault or coercion and may be directed repeatedly towards particular victims.

Working as a lawyer involves the practical application of abstract legal theories and knowledge to solve specific individualized problems, or to advance the interests of those who retain (i.e., hire) lawyers to perform legal services.

It appears my fridge freezer has packed up. Cuntsticks.

(To be fair, I bought it secondhand for £30 4 1/2 years ago, so have probably had my money's worth, but it's an expense I could have done without at the moment.)

I have been stuck in all day waiting for E.On to come and put a fucking electricity meter in, what a complete waste of a day.

In other news I seem to be attracting some good looking ladies recently - all 3 of whom are single mums. Maybe I'm too fussy. :x

Fucks sake, just what you want after a long hard day at work.

That said I was quite impressed how it managed to get inside the sealed bulb.

Not normally one for grumpy posts but slightly miffed after getting an email from the owner of the Nova which was donating its doors to mine, someone's tried to break into it, wrecking the passenger door (the only I really need) in the process. Back to square one.

Today my 'only 20,000 miles' distributor turned up, it looked dreadful and had quite clearly been pissing out just as much oil from the centre seal as my current one, therefore rendering it completely pointless. Good old ebay, I guess you get what you pay for.

Ah well, tomorrow is another day!

Meh, It's not important, just a man dressed in Tron clothes with the caption 'I reported you to the cyber police'.

This eBay addiction needs to be dealt with, stat.

I've recently bought an NAD tape deck for £21, which is lovely, but this has alerted me to how much other wonderful old cheap hi-fi stuff there is out there. I've since bought an analogue ARCAM tuner and just now hidden the phone upstairs lest I accidentally increase my bid on a rather nice ARCAM Alpha 7 CD player that I DON'T NEED ANYWAY. Seriously, I have a Cyrus in the garage that I just need to be bothered to repair then my hi-fi will be back to full strength and I can stop using the PS3 and DAC for all my terrible music. And I certainly don't need the '60s Rogers amplifier I'm trying to buy.

Still, it's cheaper than cars.
