I don't think they have auxiliary heating in a Wolesley Six.

My grump, which is the same as everyone else's at the moment is the cost of fuel, I put 22.93Ltrs of diesel int he Bora tonight, Bloody £30!, craziness.

It's a disgrace isn't it? Things get more expensive, demand still goes up and things get even more expensive! Ah, the joys of capitalism. I'm STILL fuming about bankers and generally anyone who's on £100,000 or more a year, yet actually deserves to be on whatever jobseekers get at the moment.

LOL. I had a similar thought :D

Just had another thought... Was wondering if current fuel prices are now at a level where they would have roughly been if car tax was scrapped and it put on fuel instead - when fuel was about 80 or 90p a litre (not that long ago really). Truckers would have told you then (as they will now too) that it would have meant everything would be too expensive and the whole universe would enter melt down. And people living in "the country" would also have said they'd not be able to afford to live either.

I have heard dint used to describe a dent in something paper eg a painting or drawing in the art/antiques business.

But yeah, it's a stupid word. Like 'gusto'. That annoys me too.

However, the people living in "the country" that were interviewed were probably those who the reporters from "the city"(sic) could find at a location not too far from civilisation.

Those who really live in the sticks have probably not been interviewed about it and are getting on with life while tightening their belts, just like the rest of us...

In 2008 I paid 149/litre for diesel in Tongue, Highland. I dread to think what they're paying now.

Ah yes, that reminded me. I filled up the Micra last week. Its cost me a total of £45 to fill to the brim. A year or two back it would have cost me about £25/£30. :|

Filled up the night before last, £83 and there would have been room for another ten Litres

Then someone called the police and an ambulance. No I hadn't gone berserk at the outrageous cost. Some bugger smoking - in a petrol station!

Police had to drive my car home for me :(

The copper looked just like Robert Carlisle. Thought I knew him until the penny dropped.

Another day of work yesterday. Not safe from smoke anywhere - it was 23:30 when I ventured out for diesel, 1:00 when I got home and collapsed.

Fuel station is one mile from my house.

Who's whining endlessly about smokers. Are you sure it isn't imaginary?

My right to breathe supercedes your right to stop me by smoking. Simple.

And that "me" and associated pronouns cover everyone who wasn't actually born smoking and has chosen to continue in their natural state, rather than hasten their own and everyone else's end (people who choose the second option being covered by the "you" above, and all associated pronouns). Correct me if I'm wrong, but isn't hastening someone else's end against their wishes, actually murder?

Asthma from 2 years old, so I know what it's like not being able to breathe. It's not fun. I don't just mean out of breath because you ran for a bus: I mean seriously, painfully, chest-three-sizes-too-small unable to breathe. When you're six years old and it's the middle of the night, it's fucking scary! Smokers, you have all this to come, and it's all your own work. This being the 21st century, you will be looked after at the taxpayers' expense in a state-of-the-art run-down hospital 22 miles from home by one African agency nurse and if you're really lucky, a Polish cleaner. One of them might even speak English.

Wanna talk grumps? Not being able to breathe is a bloody good one. Not being able to breathe because of someone else's selfishness should be grounds for a riot!

I know several Autoshiters smoke, so I'm kind of expecting a backlash, but I refer you to my first line.

non-smokers*

Not a term I use, Norm, though I take your points about freedom. Does that include the freedom to randomly and indiscriminately shorten the life of someone who might not want it shortened?

*I prefer "Natural Breather." "Non-smoker" implies that smoking is the natural condition for a human, and not-smoking is some minority perversion, brought about by ill-informed choice. The truth, of course, is precisely the reverse of that.

I've never smoked and don't have a problem with anyone smoking. I feel a bit sorry for their rights being restricted - I thought the old smoking/no-smoking area was about the right balance. Getting rid of smoke rooms and replacing them with glorified bus shelters was just ridiculous and seemed to me like a way to punish them. The overwhelming majority of smokers I've met have asked me if it's alright if they smoke in front of me and I'm OK with it. On the other hand, I regularly choke in the office from daft women spraying themselves with foul perfume and they've never asked whether I mind or not, never mind all the times I've had to put up with passive idiocy from the general public at large.

Obviously I've sympathy for people who really can't hack being around smokers, but I suppose there's got to be compromise somewhere. Otherwise it'd just be like Demolition Man and we'd be driving around in old GM concept cars, drinking tofu shakes, etc.

Hirst - I'm glad someone else is concerned about the dangers of passive perfume. I thought it was just me. Girls, if you smell that bad that you need to disguise it with some overpriced scent in a bottle, see a doctor.

Actually: yes! Mrs Ramrod oversprays from time to time, and I have to drive wherever we were going with the windows down, although to be honest that's not often a hardship here! What is a hardship is the constant "wind the window up" coming from my left.... :(

Successive governments have dithered and procrastinated over this, and road pricing. RP could work for commercial vehicles, because every mile's accounted for, it wouldn't be so easy for private cars and bikes. So if cars etc., were kept on the system as is, and trucks and buses were given a 100% duty rebate at the pump and retrospectively charged...it might work. And make foreign vehicles entering the country buy a carnet de passage so they're contributing something too.

Something does need to be done about rural fuel prices, the situation cannot remain as it is.

Yeah, people keep buying, regardless of the price; because the need is great. The haulage industry's business failure rate is worse than ever, and the fuel prices are a prime suspect; but goods need to keep moving, because the need is great.

So why is it, that the boss of Go-Ahead Group can sit on 'On The Money' on radio 5 last week, and bemoan the bus industry's 80% rebate on fuel VAT being reduced to 60%? The railways run on red, which is much cheaper; and airlines pay no fuel duty of any sort. The haulage industry gets fuck all. When there's only Norbert Dentressangle and Eddie's Gokarts left shifting goods for UK PLC, maybe somebody will realise.

By then it'll be too late.

Time for some nicotine, then maybe some inhaler...they happily co-exist in my bloodstream.

On the whole I'm in agreement with that. I accept that although it pisses me off personally, other people have a right to do as they will within legal restraints.

My moan was that in both those places on the same day, the areas were no-smoking legally and they could have been prosecuted for lighting up where they did.

The 36 hours of extreme personal distress I guess is just something I have to live with, along with being banned from most public places. Including hospitals.

And ffs when was it ever a good idea to smoke in a petrol station?

As for the perfume, I literally can't go in to our offices or it's another day without pay.

Re: an older post and some excellent advice given. I did contact claims direct and all seemed to be going well then the solicitors backed away stating that it was too close to the deadline. That'll learn me to procrastinate!

What is auxiliary heating anyway?

Anyway, my grump is that I'm still looking for work so today had to go to the job centre. Depressing enough in itself but going there to claim benefit just feels totally wrong. The person there was very helpful and did mention since I am now living along I could claim housing benefit but I've put off doing that as I'd honestly feel ashamed to do it. Actual job hunting is being hampered by the fact I still can't work out what I actually want to do, or how to use my degree.

Plus my stupid laptop connecting to the internet at random, despite everything else on the network connecting just fine

I think it's those diesel powered Eberspacher (other brands available) type heaters you find in camper vans, ex military Land Rovers, etc.

An independant heater, usually a little ceramic matrix thing (kinda like a catalytic converter really), which runs off the vehicle's fuel, and blows the hot air into the cabin. AKA 'night heater' in a truck, but commonly used in the frozen parts of the world to keep the cabin usable, and the coolant unfrozen.

...claim housing benefit but I've put off doing that as I'd honestly feel ashamed to do it.

Don't feel ashamed. It's a helping hand when you need it - think of it as a sub of sorts. Pay it back into the welfare system when you're working. In fact, I'm not using it at the mo, and all the loads I'm shifting about are flinging tons of taxes in, so have some on me!

Experience suggests that most smokers' need for nicotine is MUCH stronger than any respect (hah!) or fear they may have for the law, or for anyone else's needs/rights/comfort. Also that nobody will prosecute, or even report.

Here's a little story, that was a constant source of Grump for me at the time, and still raises a grump whenever I think of it. I used to drive for a produce wholesaler. If anyone walked off the job or phoned in sick, or was sacked, all of which happened with alarming frequency, it usually fell to me to cover their round. Using their truck. After the first few times I started packing a dustpan and brush, baby wipes and air freshener in my car, because I KNEW that any cab I got thrown was going to be hip-deep in ash and associated litter, and would cost me at least 15 minutes of loading-up time before I could get out on the road. This was AFTER the so-called smoking ban was introduced, and truck cabs were deemed a workplace (correctly so) and therefore a no-smoking area. Do you really want the fresh fruit that your local school serves to your children, to be handled by people who are completely happy to spend ten hours a day (including eating their lunch) surrounded by such mess? I never accepted a dinner invitation from any of these guys, I don't want to think what their kitchens looked like.
