The grumpy thread

What part of my post -

The shooting of Jean Charles de Menenez was a tragedy,

Was 'Gung Ho'? The whole 'what if it were a member of my family' thing is just lazy.

I doubt if either of us have the ability or training to judge whether a stop on a vehicle that intelligence connects with armed villains is 'non life threatening'.

Good sophistry. Choose to quote the only sentence in your post that wasn't "gung ho".

I'm not making judgements. You are - or were. Going on past form, you'll have edited them out by now.

My biggest grump now is my forgetting that getting into a discussion with you is utterly pointless.

I was trolling a little but I have no problem with people selling a bit of weed. The problem is with your neighbours being loser stoners and prohibition, not the drugs.

TBH the problem is that there is a view that cannibis is harmless and soft touch enforcement. Now if they legalised (with sutible taxation and health warnings) oral cannibis that would be OK.

Both sides -

The twats trying to riot

and

People rushing to condemn a dead bloke

are getting too far ahead of themselves IMHO.

It pains me to say it (a bit) but even if he proves to be the scummyiest of the scum, we still need to be sure about the circumstances - as much as we may feel "good riddance" or "he's no loss" etc, if we start thinking that the cops must always be 100% right to kill people, we're on a slippery slop (IMHO of course).  And I say that as someone who would cheerfully pull the trigger on Dale Cregan.

The BBC with typical lazy ,thoughtless journalism weren't helping yesterday , by starting every Radio report , that I heard on R2 and R4, with

" Police yesterday, shot and killed a man , in what they say, was a planned operation"

WTF? Shoot to kill policy introduced in Yorkshire. Talk about about robust Policing!

Posted

It is another example of lazy journalism.....Correct phrase would have been "Yesterday, Police shot and killed a man during, what they say, was a planned operation."

Of course, knowing the BBC, there was a slant to their coverage and they fully intended to convey the meaning that could have been inferred....

Thanks, gents.  I knew there was something that didn't quite sit right with the way that was being reported yesterday but I couldn't quite work it out (it's my age).

The shooting of Jean Charles de Menenez was a tragedy, I very much doubt this was.

The only similarity is that it was as a result of a Police operation.

To paraphase Orwell, I'm grateful that 'rough men stand ready in the night to visit violence on those who would do us harm'

I edit my posts. I treat every post as a draft. if I think my post can be improved in any way, I edit it. The facility exists and so I use it,

I've just edited this one.

I've quoted the complete, unedited post, I've never heard George Orwell described as 'Gung Ho' before, nor can I see the quote used in a 'Gung Ho' fashion.

I am making a judgement, I think that based upon that which I've read, Yassar Yaqub probably got what was coming to him.

I'm open minded enough to change my mind if the evidence emerges to suggest otherwise however.

It's not really a discussion if the only acceptable outcome is for me to agree with whatever position you take but I'm always open to persuasion that I'm wrong through the medium of reasoned, logical, factual argument.

Went out to my Deliveroo taster session, and the bastard trainer did a no-show.

Arrive at requested place, 10:50am for an 11 start (it said be five minutes early).

11:10, still nobody here. Call up the number on the confirmation form, ask what's going on. Definitely in the meeting place specified (outside a self storage unit - and it couldn't be inside as you needed a key to get in), I've done all I can, this isn't my fault. Sit tight they say, we'll call the Manchester office and see what's going on.

Another 40 minutes passes, I'm fucking freezing now and I can't feel my toes. 11:50 I get a phone call from somewhere in Manchester, a guy tells me that the trainer is unavailable - no shit, I've been waiting for him an hour. It seems they genuinely didn't know because the guy backpedalled a bit when I pointed out how long I'd been waiting.

Okay, while you're here shall we reschedule you, he says. Seemed to falter a bit, then offers 1pm tomorrow. Alright, good enough. I set off home.

Email and text confirmations come through a little after, 13th Jan, 3pm.

Eh?

Called them up again to ask what gives, and it seems like the first guy confused himself and started talking out of his arse, because the very pleasant lady on the phone said that 3pm on the 13th is the next available appointment.

Now credit where credit's due, all the office folk I've dealt with today have done a decent enough job, all this is due to one fuckwit going AWOL for whatever reason.

I'm pissed off because it's a week's pay down the drain for no good reason, and i'm just going to be on my arse instead - and I had my eye on that 216 cabrio...

Came home and there's some post from me from an Amazon Marketplace seller, but of course they've got my order wrong too.

Can't catch a bloody break can I?

Garages ripping people off, I thought this sort of thing had died out. Naive I know, but the scale of these jokers, just because it was a young girl.

Tuesday got a call from daughter, her mate was distraught. Took 56 plate Clio for MOT, got a call ,failed. Quote to repair £1475, yes fourteen hundred and seventy five pounds! I got reg and looked up the fail. Airbag light, emissions, a leaky back box and some bushes

I told her to pay for the MOT and pick it up, yesterday she took it to Zubin and Mo, my favourite part worn tyre and MOT emporium . This morning she called round with a bottle of whiskey and box of Quality Street, she'd just collected the Clio and paid £185 including another MOT.

Apparently the first place were also including a fuel pump and cambelt which also failed the MOT but don't appear on fail sheet !! Piss taking Cowboys .

But is probably good enough?   The point that Bavarian Retro is making is that 'probably a wrong 'un' is not sufficient justification for shooting a man dead.   Even if, as seems highly likely, he was an armed drug dealer that doesn't justify shooting him out of hand.   I believe that the British police armed units are professional for the most part and think this is likely a legally justified shooting but the way it was reported and saying he 'got what was coming to him' is the start of a slippery slope.

Take it from me living in a country where the police can shoot people more or less with impunity does not make you sleep easy at night.

Hey, that MOT has got loads stricter if it also includes cambelts and fuel pumps.

I bet Junkman even approves of it now.

Some utter Cuntburger has broken into Stepdaughter's 306 outside her flat in Plaistow; nicked the stereo. Left a lighter on the front seat, so hopefully the old bill will be there soon and get some dabs / clues.

No glass broken, door apparently ok, so who knows how they got in.

Got the standard Peugeot stereo to go back in, but there seems no point, will be for sale soon anyway.... POOSSIBLE ROFFALL?

Job adverts with no actual salary listed, or just £Competitive.

Jog on. At least give me a ballpark figure to let me know if it's worthwhile to apply.

What engine is it?

If the coppers even bother to turn up I would be surprised and it is very unlikely they will even try to get prints off the lighter. I had a shed broken into some years ago when I lived in the south east. The dip shits left a torch behind. The copper did turn up to my surprise and asked me to bag the torch up for them. 6 Weeks later he came back round to give me the torch as they didn't get any prints off it and no one claimed it so I could have it. Cracking deal that was lost a few hundred quids worth of tools, but got a pound shop torch so that made up for it.

To be honest i'm not expecting much from teh Rozzers, but she's been told that they're on their way, will see what happens. I'm still at work, will take a trundle up there when i knock off, see what the craic is.

Monsieur Pissoil is a 1400 pez Meridian in that light metallic blue. Poundland trimzyo, ex Sporty-Shite. Recent clutch, mot til July, clonks and knocks (they all do that Sir) never had a FTP even when the coil packs started playing up and he was only running on 3. Stepdaughter has got a promotion, which will involve a lot of driving, so will be looking out forsomething a bit newer soon.

A 306 I used to own got broken into twice. They didn't manage to get anything either time.

The first break-in looked like this:

Then the second one looked like this (I drove it to my parents' farm like that, then bent the door back into shape with some good old-fashioned farmer style resourcefulness):

The braindead cunts couldn't even unlock it the first time, and the second time they smashed up the radio upon realising I didn't keep the face plate in the car.

Also, not interested in a 1.4 306, sorry.

Posted

Dislike.

At least with a smashed window you're replacing a pane of glass & contents rather than having to find a new door.

Hope she gets sorted. I might have a spare DIN faceplate in my stash o' tat and/or a spare head unit she can have gratis if it's any help.

I said used to own. That was back in 2012.

That particular 306 then spat out a conrod in 2013 and ended up in the scrappy. 179k miles ain't too bad though. I wonder if the 24psi of boost contributed to that...  It was a cracker when it worked though. XUD on a Bosch pump running veg oil, and it would light up the front wheels in 3rd if the roads were even slightly greasy.

I still have a hankering for another silly XUD, even to this day.

I had my Cortina broken into (probably with a lolly stick) and they nicked the stereo out of that, despite me having the front panel in my picket. Dozy twats left theJBL 6x9s on the back shelf....

edit: dont know why this has gone small....

Must have still been a pain in the arse. I'm in my yard of doom tonight so I'll check for the faceplate y stereo.

Jill Saward passes away at 51.

She endured a truly horrendous experience and used her life to champion the issue of rape.

She then dies at 51.

^ really? I probably shouldn't be getting involved in a political discussion (because grumpy, cold and at work) but I can't let that pass unremarked.

Really.

As others have said much better than I can, you can pour as much money into the NHS as you want. They'll find a way to waste it & not achieve anything. I work in the NHS & see it every day.

'No Angel' is the stock phrase you're searching for, it's in the cliche' drawer next to 'Promising Footballer' and 'Aspiring Rapper'.

"Lovable rogue" is one that's normally trotted out when "local scumbag" would be a better epitaph.
