I cannot get the doors on the cortina to sit properly no matter how much I fuck around with them. I'm convinced they're mk5 doors with mk4 frames welded onto them as the screw that would release the frame is plug welded on. I've straightened the frame but it's sitting low at the back so bangs off the striker plate and sticks out at the bottom. Anyone any hints?

Posted

the frames are welded on all Cortina door.

all mk4 4dr saloon & est  & mk5 est use the same complete doors (the mk5 est  front ones just have the mirror/window runner fitted).

either the wrong screws have been fitted to striker or lock mech, or the hinge is worn/needs adjusting some can be a nightmare'

worse still could be a rotten A post.

"The price of these is only going one way."

The phrase you see in so many adverts now that it has overtaken, "barn find" and, "MoT tester commented on how good it was. " as my cue to move on to another ad.

The price can do whatever it wants.

The value is rarely going anywhere when you see that phrase, however.

Sat in the car park of mcdonald's next to a saab where the tit in it has still got the engine running. I can smell how hot it's getting from 10 foot away and the bonnets got a nice heat haze.

Bet he hasn't checked the oil or coolant for 5 years, and will act surprised when it shits itself one day.

He hasnt got his fot on the brakes as well has he?

Are the 2 door, doors the same as the 4 door ones?

The A-posts are good. I wouldn't have as much confidence in the metal behind the hinge on the door but there's no wobble when I move it up and down.

I tried putting a shim in the lower hinge at one point as I though that would bring it up but it didn't work.

This is what I'm up against

Sorry couldn't see the breaks. It was a floppy top and fully buttoned up. Thought it might have been for the aircon but it isn't hot or cold so maybe he was just a tit

For crying out loud! I know she won't be reading it but have a bit of decorum.

BUY NEW CARS OLD CARS ARE DANGEROUS*

*if you drive like a stunt driver

They've taken low-down weight out of the car (carpets, sound-deadening, seats), and put in more high-up weight (more than half of the roll-cage).

My basic grasp of physics leads me to the (probably wrong) conclusion that this will raise the centre of gravity, making the car more likely to fall over. Or am I talking bollocks?

Yeah, but they strung it out for half an episode of Fifth Gear so it's fine.

Some daft old twat behind me today on a sports bike. He was right on my o/s/r light yet had plenty of time and room to overtake.

I won't have cars or vans trying this, I find it intimidating, so I actually had to tell him ( via the medium of hand gestures) to fuck off back.

At one point the road narrowed and he does up enough for his front wheel to be level with my fuel cap, I don't know how I didn't knock him off.

Most bikers are great (in my experience) but this daft twat was a mobile accident spot.

I saw a few idiots on sports bikes on the way back from sf . Makes me cringe when you see some of the overtaking .

RE: Fifth Gear package

So, physics.

All that Yaris did was understeer on the tarmac. I don't see what an on-board computer could do to stop the wheels digging into the grass if you spear off into it at speed. ABS, EBC and EBD get confused with split mu surfaces.

Conclusion: Pointless. Don't drive like a tit.

2006 Alfa 159 in today lovely looking car but the front subframe rotted through at less than 8 years. Surprise surprise Alfa's 8 year corrosion warrenty doesn't cover the subframe. £840 plus the vat for a new frame not a nice bill for my customer who has just bought it privately.

What upsets a cyclist while riding on a footpath ?

Pedestrians.

What upsets a cyclist while riding on the road ?

Motorists..

I know ! a bit if a generalisation.

I can't stand cyclists riding on the pavement. Since moving to Peterborough, three of the inconsiderate bastards have nearly run me over and then shouted abuse. I DON'T HAVE EYES IN THE BACK OF MY HEAD! Soz.

I have recently started cycling and am not massively confident on the roads (I wouldn't ever cycle on a pavement though) so did many of my first journeys on cycle paths. What I found as my mileage increased is that a lot of these cycle routes use pavements and round here at least there is no separate area for pedestrians or bikes (eg a white line on the pavement). Also the sections on pavement are pretty poorly signposted so on occasion you are left wondering if you are still supposed to on the pavement or back on the road.

The worst bit is in Bangor where one of these shared paths is along residential streets, I can't believe nobody has been injured just stepping out of their front gate/driveway.

Since riding on these routes I have completely changed my car-drivers opinion of "there's a cycle path there, why aren't you on it?". Sometimes I think cycle paths are more dangerous than the roads and also give motorists another reason to assume more of a right to being the priority on the road.

Posted

If there is a cycle path I will try and use it. However, the car drivers round my way are all nuts, off their faces, stupid or a combination of all 3.

I sometimes have to ride on the pavement locally but it is a wide fecker and I ride slowly and carefully. Not legal but ..........

Mike made a beautifully accurate repair patch for me to weld to a car today, the welding went a treat, the end result is really nice.  Mike didn't think, and I didn't think to tell him, to cover up the Princess where it might get grinder sparks on the glass.  Just as well I have a spare front passenger door glass isn't it?  Especially now that the original one is completely fucked.

I'd outlaw the cycle lanes which are just a painted lane on normal road. They encourage an 'us and them' mentality in which the cyclist should stay in their lane full of drain grids, missing tarmac and broken glass while drivers pass too close because they're safely within 'their' lane.

That said, the cycling situation locally has improved massively over the past few years. There are sensibly placed shared use pavements which keep me out of the way of traffic (and vice versa), a bunch of mud tracks have been paved and some anti-bike fencing has been removed, again keeping bikes out of the traffic.

Shows you can make cycling easier and safer with small, cheap modifications to existing infrastructure.

Ouch.. a very common thing with the 159 I'm afraid :(

I saw a cycling argument on facebook, and the comment being repeated ad infinitum was "They don't pay no road tax, so stuff 'em".

As such, I'd like to relegate anyone driving a low-powered diesel car purely for the purposes of paying zero road tax, to driving in the gutter.
