The grumpy thread

Thank you all for offering wise words on a rant that may not seem that important. I think it just got to me as things never used to be this way and as a logical computer scientist they don't make sense. For instance, of the last two requests I sent, the one I doubted would accept did so straightaway and the one who accepted all my friends and I thought was guaranteed has ignored me. The latter is good friends with a girl I know well, we're both local and went to the same school so of everyone in that uni I must be the one person she has most in common with. Since I sent my request she has accepted half a dozen of my friends who she met that same night and we have over 30 mutual friends, so it's not like I'm trying to add random people. My situation is a bit unusual as I have finished my degree but am likely to be staying here long-term - I have already seen my own cohort leave at the end of last year and now another cohort will be leaving come December so I need to make some new friends before all the old ones disappear.

I'm currently based in an attic room of the smaller campus where nothing exciting ever seems to happen and everyone else in that room is from the Middle East. They speak to each other in Arabic, their English isn't great and we don't have much in common so making conversation with them is difficult and nobody else ever comes to visit that room so I feel rather isolated. All these people I've met are on the other campus a mile away, I never have any need to go there for work and they never have any need to come up here so facebook is really the only way I can keep in touch with them outside of social events. I know it's not the end of the world but it did make me start to question myself and why I was bothering to be sociable at all.

Don't do faceache meself, seems a bloody daft thing to do to bare your soul to the world safe in the knowledge that those skeletons are there for ever just waiting to bite you in the arse years hence.

Some bint with a small top on channel 4 has just spouted that she's dyslexic when asked to spell something.

"that's what they all say sir" why the fuck has dyslexia become the new word for being thick. If everyone that says they had it, actually had it, then I'm sure we would all be reading gibberish.

What's wrong with just admitting you're a bit shit at spelling or reading big words?

Yeah and those people with mental illnesses they have now, what's wrong with saying they're insane and institutionalising them for life?

I have a bit of a grump with people whining about Facebook. It's entirely optional and if you are on there, you don't have to post about anything. I use it to have a laugh with mates, if I'm offending anyone they can unfriend me. I rarely add anyone so it's their fault we're friends on there.

I have had face to face conversations with people before who wanted to know why we were no longer mates on FB. I usually do that because I have no interest in their activities, and I would hope people did the same to me. It does reek of them being upset because their friend count went down and they've put in a lot of effort to work out who it was. I try to stick to 100 maximum.

The dyslexia thing, if people genuinely suffer then they need support, but there are a massive number of self diagnosed non-sufferers who user it as a free pass.

Actually, the sufferers are least likely to bleat about it. SWMBO is diagnosed, but just gets on with stuff using spell check, hand writing only where absolutely necessary (she's a geek so gets away with using phones and tablets to make notes or shopping lists) and occasionally, asking me to read something for her if it's white text on dark background which she struggles with more than regular text. I don't think I've ever heard her tell someone she's dyslexic.

...stuff about friends and facebook...

Yo Quick, in life, things are never as logical as they should seem. Logically, I should be in employment now owing to my good recent experience and have some money to save/play with, but I'm not due to powers outside of my control and have to just accept that this is the way things are.

Have you thought of actually approaching the people who haven't accepted your requests and asking them if they have received it and if so why it hasn't been accepted? Might have they missed your request? You need to be a bit more open minded as to why and how, as I said before, things are never as logical as they might seem.

Personally I don't 'do' facebook even though most of my family are on there and have tried to sell me the idea of being on there. I'm quite old fashioned in that if I want to speak to family/friends, I'll pick up the phone.

You needn't have things in "common" with someone to be able to talk to them, similarly, you can have a lot of things in common with someone but seemingly not be able to talk to them. Would it not possible to ask for a transfer from your current dorm? Don't look at things logically and expect it to happen, just ask.

This what I was getting at. People with things (anything) don't go round saying they've got it . they just get the help if needed and get on with it. The ones that think they have or can use it as an excuse never shut up

Facebook is mainly for writing nonsense on. If they'll still happily chat to you and whatnot I wouldn't worry too much about not getting "Friended" on the internet.

I have never ventured there, or Twitter.

My daughter works for the University of Sunderland and is quite appalled at how the majority of students spend most of their day on their phones twittering or facing then ask her how to locate some resource and are gobsmacked to learn that most of what they need is actually available on Facebook.

I had no idea either until she told me, thought it was just a gossip board.

Does your daughter lecture in 'Modern social bollocks'?

Apparently there is a lot of academic literature available there if you know where to look (I don't)

The same is true of most social media things.  There is good stuff hiding there, Facebook, Twitter and whatever can be tailored to suit what you're interested in a lot more and good people and info can be found if you put the effort in.  As in life, though, most people don't want to put the effort in and would far rather post inane drivel about how hot X celebrity* is and take pictures of what they had for lunch at McDonalds (other fast food outlets available).

Fitted the rear door back on the Toledo...... yay. Fitting attempt at the drivers door, fail. That fucking semi floating plate is an arse to keep in the right position. I could have had both doors on today if it hadn't been an arse.

The joys* of modern kit being infinitely tweakable is that most** of it can be configured to do exactly what you want. Facebook is an excellent resource if configured correctly.

An anonymous benefactor at Uni started up a free Facebook group with scans from a book that would normally cost £75; eventually we worked out why the one copy had disappeared from the library for a week.

**excludes Apple products, particularly running iOS8.

Thanks for the post (no pun intended) on your Toledo door, PBK it reminded me of how long I spent on the Minor striker plate one hot summers day.   Apart from that it was interesting to read something I understood and not about Basefook.   My other half's daughter is a teacher and looks on there all the time.   Whatever happened to academic research.  Or reading a proper, smelly book?

The problem with actual research is you need to buy a book, which costs £££ (I always thought books should be priced per page, I can't work out why a Next catalogue at 400 pages is free but a proper book can be £70 or more....). Or, you go to the library but you can't do that in your pants.

You can if you say your american, cos they go everywhere in their pants Maaaan.

Slotty door bolt plates.... I have heard of people putting a cutoff bolt in, with a screwdriver slot, to locate it as the hinge goes over - proper bolt then screwed in and 'slotted one' unscrewed for another proper bolt.

Morris minor??

Threaded rod is the way to go for anything that is a bit tricky to offer up. If necessary you can run nuts down the threaded rod to pull things into place and let you get the first bolt in.

Thanks guys, that sounds like a plan I can live with!

It might be me again but I don't get* retro rides. Thought it was time I joined, so I did and went to look at the users cars. 90% of them are lowered with stupid wheels or some other God awful modification*.

This is even on rare stuff. What's wrong with just leaving it stock? Again I think it's me thought as I just don't understand why they do it.

People always say it's their car and they can do what they want but you can think of it not being your car. Like antiques you're just a temporary owner, they become worthless with damage. So, do the cars?

(edit: I won't be going back there)

I remember my dad cut the legs down on a perfectly good, (but unfashionable) leather-topped, library table. (It was then used as a coffee table)

I've used old engine studs of the right thread, with a slot cut in with a hacksawed/thin cutting disc.

My answer to this is always that there are people out there who do not like the compromises built in to cars by the manufacturers in order to satisfy the normal new-car buying customer.  For whatever reason these individuals would rather their car looks, performs or acts in a different way to the rest and may make alternative compromises to suit themselves and are happy to put up with the results of those choices.

Heres a triple grump, I went on a 'date' today, strategy was to go and see this 'Effie Gray' film (its culture innit man). Only suitable place to see it was Coventry Showcase cinema, which is on one of these hellish dog-eared shite hole retail parks right next to Tesco megastore, a hungry hippo pub and the M6, a suitably romantic setting I'm sure you'll agree. As I was uncharacteristically not late, I spent half an hour driving about looking for a pub or coffee shop or whatever nearby that didnt look like a fuggin dive..... fail. So I just shut up and got on with it, paying £23 for two cinema tickets and two cups of pop. Muthafuckaz!!!

Also 90% of the stuff on Retro Rides IS rubbish, that's the nature of such a big forum. It's worth having a proper ferret about to find the really good stuff, like the turbo charged Standard, the V12 Land Rover and Mr Bollox' tat thread.  It's not all SLAMMED YO INNIT PINEAPPLE, far from it.

I'm being annoyed by dog poop lately, I clean up after my dog and there's loads of dog poo bins around here so why don't other people?  Yesterday a kid on bicycle called me a kidnapper while I was walking the dog too, I have no idea what that's about.  I really don't like children, I didn't like them when I was a child.

Hey Bollox, whatever you do, don't try the old 'knob-through-the-bottom-of-the-popcorn-tub-and-ask-her-to-get-a-handful' trick. A mate tried that years ago and apparently girls are a whole lot less keen on finding a surprise cock in their snack than you might have otherwise thought.

I'm far too tight to have ever taken girls to the cinema let alone buy them popcorn.

OK. So they set it up how they like but why is it always an old car? Why don't we see brand new stuff pineappled? Why knowingly modify it beyond resale. Some end up as. Nothing but a bodyshell with a roll cage and everything else different.

As I said this is a personal thing I just don't understand and don't think I ever will
