The grumpy thread

There's a positive side to this - about ten minutes after it's implemented, Britain will have the most computer literate teenagers on the planet. Boys who otherwise wouldn't know how to use the scroll wheel will be able to configure a VPN with their eyes closed.

Kids that already know that "Videos streamed online in the UK will be subject to the same restrictions as those sold in shops" means NOTHING since the internet doesn't have borders. And no ISP has equipment fast enough to examine videos frame-by-frame as they're being streamed across the world for overly naughty stuff.

There's clearly stuff that needs to be enforced, and there's clearly stuff between grown people that's hurting nobody. I'd imagine most of the houses with kids in will have the filter turned off because dad has complained it makes the internet slow, or something.

All my cars are broken, and I left my tools in the Standard which has been dumped about 20 miles away in a pub car park. I need those to try and fix the Herald tomorrow so I can go to work on Thursday and recover the Standard. But I don't have any way of getting there because the Herald is broken. ARGH!

I dont think its about controlling porn, porn is the excuse to curb our freedoms and. of course, if anyone starts to argue against it then the government will demonise them.

my grump today - a bed bound woman who lives opposite has just been removed from her house by the fire brigade, theres is an ambulance, CID cars there and all the windows are open. Its not looking good for her right now.

.  Then, finally, I've got the head loose and the gasket's out, but can I get the head out of the car? NO!  It's still attached to something, but can I get at the twat to remove it?

It will be the exhaust flange on the turbo catching on the bulkhead. The easiest option is to remove the engine and 'box before attempting to remove the head.As you've got this far take the radiator out so as not to damage it then balance the engine and gearbox on a couple of jacks. Then remove all the mountings and drag the engine forward about three inches in the engine bay.Don't go too far forward as there is a bottom hose connected to a steel pipe bolted to the inner wing and one or the other might get damaged.

I did laugh at the streaming video line. I'll remember to take my proof of age next time I pick up a streaming video from WHSmiths.

This porn filter, if it ever exists, will be a success the same way drug prohibition has been a success. Once you've taken away the easy legal porn, kids are going to have to go looking for it in darker corners of the web. The more effective the filter is, the more likely they are to get their porn from P2P networks and other far, far, shadier places than the tube sites.

My 'list of stuff to do' on my old shitters is getting longer and longer...

The 760 should have been ready for a retest, but the front suspension keeps defeating me, and I need to obtain an EBFH because my BFH is clearly not sufficient for the forces involved in the assembly of Swedish tanks.

I took the 740 for a 350 mile blast on Sunday, and it rewarded me by losing half of its coolant and developing a horrid grinding noise from the front brakes. It's due its test in two weeks, so it needs sorting ASAP.

And then there's the 'hairdresser special' which is due its test a week after the 740 and needs a service and a rear brake rebuild. There is the daily, which is conveniently* due its 6K mile service. And SWMBO has gently* reminded me that I had promised to fix various bits on her car which has yet to happen.

And, of course,  there's still a dead Allegro on my drive, which I need to fix as nobody else wants to.

Bloody hell... Sometimes I really think I should have taken up stamp collecting instead

The best stamp collection in the world wouldn't win you the totty like that Allegro.

There isn't a steel pipe connected to the inner wing, but I did remove a collection of holes surrounded by iron hydroxide from the location you mention...it's quite possibly this that has allowed the head gasket to fail (gently).

The easiest option isn't easy when you've no way of removing the engine and box, and it would be sitting in the driveway for the scrap metal thieves to view...

It does sound like an utter twat of a job anyhow, perhaps I should just drain the fuel from it and weigh it in...

Posted

It's not a nice job and by the time you've unbolted enough to move the engine forward it's almost ready to come out barring removing the driveshafts (hence saying "easiest option").If you've just got the one trolley jack it might be possible to balance the engine and 'box on a sturdy fencepost, the engine mount should be off so once the main gearbox mount under the battery tray and the rear mounting is undone steadily lower the whole lot.Once clear of the battery tray it will come forward enough.

...and while no-one's been paying attention they're sneaking this one in under the radar ..

It sounds like a good, moral reason but that's the thin end of the wedge.

If they're restricting porn today, what will they restrict tomorrow?

Hey Mr Coal Eye, is the 205 legit at the moment? If so and you can drive it here you can use our engine hoist if you want.

Breaking news : Government unveils plans to ban shite old cars, as a recent research paper from the prestigious University Of Bums-on-Seats has showed that shite old cars increase the entropy of the universe. The government is concerned that if shite old cars are not banned NOW, they may soon lead to the END OF THE WORLD.

^ "O NOES! FINK OF DA KITTENZ!" etc. I know it sounds like a storm in a teacup, I'm just worried about them censoring government criticism or reading our emails or something later on.

Who do they think they are? News International?

It doesn't matter what they do people will find a way around it, then that way will become standard and then it all become pointless, becomes and trackable. The torrents and P2P came out of people getting done for sharing films and music via ftp sites on single servers so the technology adapts and now they can't really track it effectively anymore.

As for reading your e-mails they're already black boxing and buffering all internet traffic coming in and out of the country so if they want to look they will and you'll not even know about it.

It won't make any difference but they need to be shown to be doing something and if they can slip in some more ways of reducing your privacy then all the better for them and their grubby little policies.

I'm okay anyway I've got a tinfoild hat and y-fronts.

Did a barter deal with a member on here back in May for an XM sunroof mechanism, which was duly collected. The other side of the agreement has not been honoured, despite gentle reminders, and now no response at all. That'll learn me to be so trusting.

Sorry, people - had to get that off my chest. Onward...

With those miles, I'd be heading straight to the Rover 75/MG ZT forum. Enthusiasts (and there are many for these cars) will pay good money for a good car. They'll be wanting to know whether the various timing belts have been replaced.

Posted

To be fair WOT, that's probably all you could expect from a dealer. They (will say they) have to valet/service/prepare it, be prepared for anything it might need if they warranty it and make a profit.

We know on here it's an ace car, but try mentioning 'Rover' followed by 'V6' to the great unwashed and you'll just get sucking through teeth and 'funny' Clarkson-esque rants about how shit they are. Despite the fact these people have never even sat in one, let alone owned or driven one. That's what the dealer is up against and they have to make a profit.

I personally would think it was £695 easy, no danger. But I'm not trying to sell it.

Posted

Must say, i wouldn't like to try and sell a 75 V6 at any price, I would say theyre almost worthless sadly

I think anything older and with a decent size petrol lump is about as appealing as a dish of cat sick to a large amount of the uneducated public sadly.

Jon, is it auto or Manuel?

I have a mate possibly after one. He's in London though...

Dish the dirt then!

Nah, wouldn't want to turn it into a dogfight.

Things with six legs and wings keep blundering in and clattering around the lamp in here.  I don't mind the moths, or even the bees, but the crane flies can fuck off and the wasps can go die in a fire.

If a car is driven less than 50k miles in 14 years, then the petrol consumption makes absolutely sod all of a difference.

What do they have in mind? Buy a new car to save 150 quid worth of petrol a year?

They should trade it in for a 198X Turbo Bentley, because there will be the day such stuff becomes illegal and then they regret every yard they didn't drive a decent motor.

I need more space for cars, much, much more space. A front for my obsession would be good too, make it look like a business, then I could have a load of space. And so long as I made just enough money to cover then rent and fuel my addiction all would be well. Hey I'd even live on site in a camper or static so I had an extra £600 pcm to play with. AND Who know I might be successful, that would be a bonus. people keep coming to me with cars, cars are my forte...

Your thinking along exactly the same lines as me Samba. There are so many cars out there I want to buy and own but space is a real premium these days.

We've been lucky with wasps so far (haven't seen a single one around the garden) but I agree that crane flies are the most utterly abhorrent creatures. They serve no apparent purpose other than to spazz aimlessly around the room like nightmarish winged epileptic spiders on ketamine, and only have sufficient intelligence to identify and aim for my head every few seconds. What the hell are those legs even for, anyway - they can't actually walk on them, and the added drag factor in flight must be ridiculous. They're one of the very few creatures I have no remorse about gratuitously killing with violence - and it does take a surprising amount of effort to kill them, considering how fragile they look.
