Snowflake ? It's a word I use to insult * my daughter's white middle class (mainly female,) 20 something, friends, when she recounts a tale about their behaviour and feelings that they have been wronged.  We both agree that most of them have been given ** obscene amounts of privilege growing up, and need to (wo)man the feck up.   Or as she puts it "grow a pair, love"

* by insult I mean share my thoughts with my family in the privacy of my own home, where typically I'm told to keep my opinions to myself when I am out in the community.

** Obscene amounts of Privilege, means having whatever you want, going on 5 Proper holidays (to the far east or on Safari or skiing) on a yearly basis, and only going to the villa in Tuscany for long weekends and at Easter.  So maybe only once every 2 months.  And once you leave home, renting a Flat in Leeds City Centre for only £1200 a month, with your boyfriend, because despite being adults you both get an allowance off your parents still. (They wouldn't want you to live anywhere shit)

When I rang them about a similar-sounding set of circumstances, I was pleasantly surprised at how much discretion the call handler had. It's worth apologising, claiming a first offence etc. and see what happens.

They just brushed me off and said I'd have to make a Representation (fill in an online form and wait for 56 days!). Couldn't have been less helpful really. I shall stick to trying to avoid the crossing at all costs. Has generally worked fairly well over the years.

I thought generalisations were really, really wrong.

Recent developments on this thread remind me of Armstrong & Miller's "RAF pilots" sketch :-)

"We is better at war and flying and shit than they is"

"ooooo look at me flying a Hurricane it's a shit plane and my Mum goes chippy in her slippers"

Fantastic and made me think of history today -

But what if the thread self identifies as a happy thread?

Shit. Hadn't thought of that. Everyone return your cup of tea, immediately.

To go with my new status as a 'giffer' I have just eaten Chinese food at 3:30 in the afternoon.

It was really good and now I shall go and have a nap....

Oh, and a new 'friend' Kath has just given me an MandS card, very posh and lovely but it is proudly emblazoned with '60' on the front. I am not happy...

So which one are you then I hear you cry :)

Congratulations to Renault for designing rear seats that have taken me 2 hours (and counting) to remove.

First was the isofix bar, which is of course fairly chunky and understandably bolted directly through the floor. Provided with both T45 and 17mm hex head on the bolts I thought it wouldn't be too bad. It took lots of wd40 and all of my (admittedly insignificant) strength on a 600mm breaker bar to remove.

Once that was out of the way, it was onto the one bolt holding the middle seat mount in. Only provided with a T40 head this time, how hard can it be? It turns out this bolt protrudes out under the car, so has been subjected to 15 years of salt and other shit. The head is also soft enough that it immediately stripped, but not so soft that I could drill it with an Argos battery drill with no charge left. The seats don't need to go back in, so I think the acquisition of a grinder on my next day off should fix the problem.

Also the exhaust has started blowing and the bumper lip is hanging off. Unfortunately we can't blame either on it being french, and have to concede that it may be our fault.

Converting Ms_Peel's Clio van into a car I didn't find it too bad to take the rear seats out of a scrapper and fit them into the 'van'.

Is the Clio now breaking for spares? I'm trying to think if we need any parts - maybe headlights if they haven't developed cataracts.

We didn't crash it that badly! Just overdid a handbrake turn on grass... We're removing unnecessary weight, so lots of interior shit going spare that if nobody wants it will be going in the skip. It's MOT is up in June so the rest may be available then depending on how badly it goes!

Sodding DART charge. I was a few hours late making a payment, and now they want £107. Arseholes. If they want it, they'd better be ready for a fight. I think I shall stick to my preferred technique of avoiding the sodding thing altogether.

Had to suffer this when going to Brands Hatch last weekend.  What the hell was wrong with throwing a couple of coins into a bucket as you pass through the toll?  It's not like the online payment crap makes the traffic move the slightest bit quicker - from the few times I've used it, the traffic seems to be even worse now than with the old system.

It is.

They removed the people and just made the traffic flow one set of four lanes, the other set of four lanes, both or neither.  Back when they actually employed people, they had much finer control of the traffic into the tunnel and could keep it moving much more smoothly.

Frankly, our tolls are a joke.  The US has a lot of tolls (disagree with the idea) but they generally implement it well.  Even automated tolls have individual lanes for each vehicle and you go when it tells you to, rather than just waiting in a bloody great queue.

Mainly hillclimb is our plan, with possibly a track day or two. We wanted to do rally with it but that seems like it's probably hilariously expensive.

1.4 16v Clio, so not exactly slow and likes it when you rev the tits off it, which combined with knackered engine mounts may* be linked to the burst exhaust.

Oh, hey there, specialist:

Would you mind answering the fucking phone so I can pay the bill I definitely was* expecting, please?

Ohh will be interesting how you get on at hill climb. Sort of on my radar but all the necessary safety stuff adds up a bit too quickly for me to take that step.

I've found it to be better personally. I do the online account thing for both my and my partner's car, which tops up automatically when it drops below a tenner. Very handy.

One thing about the bridge is it does work a lot better now. The tunnel is still shite though.

That is obviously no consolation to anyone who is receiving letters from the Highways Agency. I think a reminder of “you forgot your fiver, pay us a tenner to cover postage and admin and we’ll say no more about it” would make a lot more sense than going for court action.

A bit of common sense re parking and tolls would see this sort of nonsense reduce massively. I wonder how many court cases are taken up with this sort of crap?

Waterless urinals. Has fitted in Maccies, kfc and my local leisure centre. You go in and the smell would knock a fly off shite. But they save water and the planet and stuff they say. NO it's just another PR exercise like Maccies bloody recycling bins which get bagged up and all go in the same bin. My leisure centre has a massive swimming pool and about twenty showers that the kids all standing for ages with the water running. But none to flush a urinal.

Safety equipment is definitely a big expense, hopefully at least some of it can be shared between us since obviously only one of us will be on the course at a time. We may decide that track days are more economically viable after all, who knows. Or the car may shit itself before we ever get a chance to get it on track
