The grumpy thread

I sacked off telly service when we finally got pissed off enough with Virgin to bin it off after being a customer since 2000 or thereabouts (London Cable, Birmingham Cable, Telewest, Virgin Media, all the same company, just various rebrandings and takeovers).

We now have internet only provided by Plusnet. No set top box or over the air TV service. We use Netflix, Amazon Prime, Youtube iplayer and torrents in approximately that order. If you have a PS3 or Xbox 360 kicking about they are both very capable netflix/amazon boxes. There is nothing of value on broadcast TV that can't be got via an online player, and you will spend significantly less time watching advertisements.

When your viewing is done online, and you then visit someone with an actual telly, you truly realise how awful and repetitive adverts are! Life without ad breaks is marvellous.

But they were not British company's, so not British.

Can't believe I. Getting into a stupid pedantry pissing contest, but;

In May 2000 BMW sold what then became MG Rover to the Phoenix band of thieves led by John Towere( an Englishman) for £10.

For just under 5 years this company was run into the ground for the benefit of the Phoenix Four's personal pension gain.

During this time when it was as British as Cecil Kimber the company manufactured the ZT 1.8 , which even used the K series engine developed when the company was under the control of BRITISH Aerospace. None of these things is necessarily a good thing, but it does make it a British car.

I know that Jaguar was owned by an American company when the X-Type was made , but it's a Jaguar that makes it British , same as my Volvo is Swedish and my Merc is German even though One was designed , developed and utilises a Ford platform but the company was Chinese when it was made and one comes all the way from Alabama .

You'll be telling me Minis aren't English next!

Minis are as English as Prince Phillip.

So what’s my Capri then?

Ford are American.

Capri was a European development.

Mine was carefully and expertly assembled by scousers.

Imho it’s British.

I think of things like the Bluebird as British since they were built here despite it being a Japanese company.

The trouble with things that are definitely Britsh is that they're almost always as crap as they are brilliant.  It's quite a feat of engineering, really.

Spent money on new caliper and pads for audi - problem still persists. EPB module is kaput. To be fair I am beibg philosophical - the pads were worn and the caliper was tired. I have ordered a used part for £40 as they are plug and play.

But they were not British company's, so not British.

Then how come they were so crap? There's landfill containing more failed K series gaskets than noddy wrappers.

Are other modern cars any better though? Case in point is Brens post above, on his on going electronic handbrake issue.

Ordered another Olfi camera, and it still has a high frequency thing going on (albeit quietly but still visible on a spectrum analyser) and the sound is really muffled on this one. FFS! This was meant to be the main camera for the Bulgaria trip, to try and take the load off my phone (which will be getting used for naviation quite a bit I suspect). ARSE.

Could you not filter out the high frequency sound in your video editor of choice?

Not easily. Had a go with the first camera, and just ended up with muffled cack. If I have to edit out something, it just isn't right. I'm pretty disappointed, and amazed no-one else seems to have had the same issue.

^^ Muffled cack?

Reminds me of the time that we had several family members staying with us at the static caravan. Getting up at 3 in the morning to go to the toilet a muffled cack was vital.

I smashed my knee to bits over 2 mths ago...... not the grump. Been operated on, drugged senseless and immobile for far too long (for me) and out if it totally (still not the grump).

GF has been fantastic, I was moving a couple of projects due to garage roof needing complete renewal...... (still not the grump)

Paid a guy to move them as I was crippled, all good and no problems I was told.

Managed to get to new place last night for first time, no Carlton estate or SD1 in the garage........ WTF!

Called guy with trailer, he then tells me remote for garage door wouldn't work so he left them in the compound (secure fence and remote for the gate too) 'with a note' FFS!!!

Called garage owner, he gave me details for the land management team, they let me know that both vehicles were removed as 'dumped' over a month back and the invoice for fees is en route now they know who's cars they were....... double FFS

Turns out boyo had been sitting in front of the second entrance - which is a sepeprate part of the complex. More annoying is the fact he helped me move the fucking Triumph and Van - so he's been in before!

Nothing left of the cars, already stripped and mostly sold off........ legal advice has amounted to - it's not worth the hassle fella.......

Omega 3000 24v manual estate and Rover V8 manual SE both gone.... took me sodding ages to find them too. My gf watched with very little pity as a grown man cried.........

My favourite marine parts supplier has been taken over - were really good, cheap and responsive.

Just got a wiper kit for my truck from them and found they are now owned by Euro Car Parts.........

Wait wait, what the actual fuck? You've essentially had two cars stolen and stripped AND you're being billed for the trouble?

Ian, the frequency is about 13K.  I managed to get rid of it using Reaper (but you can do the same in Audacity) using a graphic EQ with the 12K band attenuated and smaller attenuation to the surrounding bands.

It didn't make it particularly muffled and got rid of the ring, although I appreciate that it's a major pain in the arse to edit it each time.

Thanks. The sound generally doesn't seem as clear or loud on this camera. Oh well. Too late now. Will just have to see what I can do in the edit suite in a couple of weeks' time.

On the subject of tailgating wankers, yesterday on the M6 it took an hour and a half to do 10 miles - the cause - a lorry gone into the back of a car.

This morning on the M6 - an hour to do 10 miles - the cause - a lorry gone into the back of a car

Here is an idea, BACK THE FUCK OFF! Every day I see at least 5 or 6 lorries aggressively tailgating the shit out of cars through that 10 mile section of 50mph roadworks because their speedos read true and the car is only doing 47mph at his indicated 50.

And I don't just mean following a bit close, I mean full on light flashing, lane swapping, horn blasting cuntery of the highest order. Fucking pack it in you utter wankers because this is the result and then you fuck up everyones day

Agreed, I'm not a nervous driver by any stretch but roadworks have started to panic me, i always travel at an indicated 53 which I know to be 50, many truck drivers just want to continue at the limiter driving like absolute arseholes.

That legal advice is wrong. If you know who sold/destroyed the vehicles, you have a case against them. It would not have been "unreasonable" for the land owner to make enquiries into who owned the vehicles.

Remember he is not in UK. Forrin laws can be very different and a massive pain in the arse.

See also my pressure washer scenario which would have been resolved weeks ago in UK but currently is on the point of ending with me rampaging round the shop with a bunch of flowers, tickling all the staff.

Dave would you mind rephrasing that last sentence please? I know you're joking but I'm sure you'll understand how comments like that on a public forum like this could be cause for trouble.
