The grumpy thread

We'd signed contracts (but not exchanged) and got a completion date. Buyer got a promotion and is moving away from the area (they said).

Means several more months paying a mortgage and rent, and worst time of the year to try and sell.

karma is such a cruel thing - I was enjoying a moment of smugness this morning as I drove my newly acquired Honda crv to the tyre centre to have winter tyres fitted, just as the first flakes were starting to fall - I got as far as the end of my street and the bugger conked out on me :(

initial investigations show the battery to be ok (I swapped it over with the known good battery on my civic, the civic started no problem but the Crv just turns over)

the fuel pump has power but doesn't appear to be pumping any fuel - I took the outlet hose off and squeezed the priming bulb, fuel flowed no problem but turning the engine over didn't produce any flow at all.

I called the rac and they are sending someone along, thankfully I don't have to wait with the car so came home to put the kettle on. I'll make sure to have a cuppa ready for the rac man when he arrives.

the Rac chap has been (pretty quick service for the time of year, under the three hours predicted by the call centre) and had a good rummage about. he got it running on easy-start but the car isn't pumping fuel itself - he phoned one of his colleagues who previously was a Honda tech, apparently he had never seen a Crv diesel fuel pump needing replaced :(

we shall see what the garage have to say tomorrow, I'm really hoping it's not going to be a big bill this close to Christmas

so currently we have :

one car with insurance but no tax (mx5 is sorn for winter)

one car with tax and no insurance (civic insurance expires tonight)

one car with tax and insurance and a fecked fuel pump

bugger !

I have just fished my phone out of a clients fucking swimming pool.

Client has gone out fortunately, thus unable to hear verbal reaction.

Why did you throw your phone into a swimming pool? That's a bit of a stupid thing to do really.

Check the fuel cut off switch. Some have been a bit sensitive on Honda's. I've set mine off on my Civic before after fiddling with some trim near it, go for a hour drive and then it wouldn't start the next time I started it.

Not sure where it is on the CRV but on the civic it's behind the plastic near the driver's door. Give a reassuring click when pushed back in if has triggered.

Did you block his toilet while you were there?

An ex employer was once so hot he jumped into the clients swimming pool forgetting he had his new phone and wallet in his pocket...

it's behind the glovebox on the Crv, I checked but I don't think it had tripped, it wouldn't push in or click no matter how hard I pushed. I hope it isn't a fuel pump that's needed, even second hand ones are bloody pricey :(

Is the CRV the 2.2 CTDi lump? If so, I think the major engine parts are mostly interchangeable between other 2.2ctdis. Check parts numbers. Twosmoke300 may be able to confirm too.

I have seen on civinfo.com that cheap diesel fuel filters can cause issues with leaking in air on the engines. Usually recommend genuine Honda.

Agreed a price via eBay on the Mazda, no contact with the buyer since.

Why bother haggling and agreeing to purchase if you are going to disappear under a stone?

Posted

as far as I know, it is the same 2.2 ctdi engine as the civic and accord. with a bit of luck that might keep the parts cost down, although I'm dreading tomorrow's phone call from the garage.

In no particular order; Parkinsons, vascular dementia, family politics, stroke, hospitals, double standards, and bureaucracy.

I just need to keep my shit together until the 23rd when I can just relax and ignore all this bullshit for a couple of weeks.  Almost there now.

Just stop then? You've already broken the habitual addiction, and the chemical addiction is broken for hours every time you stop actively putting nicotine in.  Only gets easier.

Just stop then?

Why didn’t I think of that? :D

TBH I’m not using that much of the gum, just still really want to smoke sometimes

Probably because everyone* has told you quitting nicotine addiction is hard. It's not, when you think about it all you have to do is *not* do someting.

To be fair, although I 'went cold turkey', I only smoked about 20 a day for ten years until the day I stopped.

Same. One day, I just decided I didn't want to smoke anymore. It's all in the mind. That was 18 years ago, and I've not had one craving since.

I did the same with sugar in tea/coffee, though I admit the type 2 diabetes diagnosis helped the decision more than somewhat.

My father once told me that he could not describe the expression on the specialist's face when my father said casually he could 'start smoking his pipe again' after having a benign but suspicious lump removed from his mouth.

That was ten years before I started smoking.

It's never stopped being a reference though; I was recovering from a cold the other week, and felt myself get to the point of being 'well enough to start smoking again'.

Yeah, quitting smoking is easy by just stopping. Just as easy for some to cure their depression by just cheering up a bit and beating anorexia by having some food. Look, you found it easy to do, well done I'm happy for you. It doesn't mean the whole world is like you though.

It's funny isn't it? I quit alcohol no problem, chocolate no problem, but the fags is another story.

Of course it's not.  My brother being a case in point, he's an expert in giving up smoking as he's done it several times a year, probably for a decade.

I do think there's a lot put onto nicotine though we're constantly told (usually by people who sell gum or e-fags) that we 'need help' in giving up nicotine.  Personally I think that's crap - break the habit and don't replace it with something else which might be nearly as bad.  I took up eating bananas as a distraction, which was great because I don't actually like them.
