I've seen a few for sale over here but I don't think I've ever seen one in the flesh. 

Also available as an estate based Van. Possibly even rarer but I have actually seen this one.

Seeing as they must have been cheap which must be a selling point for commercial vehicles you'd think they might have been more common but obviously they weren't.

Weren't these (God awful things) the same as the Mk5 'Mexico' as in just as shit as the standard Escorts, but had stripes, a spoiler and different wheels? Must have been a run out thing I would think.

They were  but not a run out model, some anniversary from memory? 

When the lads in work went to insure an escort Mexico they were met with ridiculous quotations at first based on the original escort Mexico being a bit of a performance car in its day, and obvs stolen a lot back then. 

Once the insurers realised nobody in their right mind would steal one of these pieces of shit, order was restored. 

I think the Mexico edition even had wheel trims?

Tragic.
