catsinthewelder Posted August 25, 2018 Posted August 25, 2018 We looked under the bonnet and in all the door shuts but couldn't find a paint code, I did take a pic of the VIN number. It looks pinker in the photo but is bright red in reality, I imagine that there was only one bright red on the colour chart at the time. The other silly question is where should I get the paint? I told her I would go to the local factors on Monday but presumably I can find something better and cheaper online. Its not a complete waste of funds as it is a similar enough red to paint the rusty arches on the 214.

Snipes Posted August 26, 2018 Posted August 26, 2018 I think I asked this before, but I forgot the answer so apologies. All my moderns seem to wear the front tyres on the inside edge. Are they too much toed in or toed out? What cars and what suspension mods (if any)?
Alfamale Posted August 26, 2018 Posted August 26, 2018 Could anyone who has bought a car privately in France talk me though the process. Do I literally turn up with cash and come away with the car and the Carte Gris or is it more involved than that? Thank you all.
nigel bickle Posted August 26, 2018 Posted August 26, 2018 Buying in France? Yup, about that. May want you to sign a ‘Cessation de Vente’, so he can get it out of his name. CT = MOT, which you may or may not feel necessary. Insurance? Normal rules apply - pick your position..

If so it's at the bottom If you only got the VIN through the bottom of the windscreen then it doesn't encode that and it's not part of the build sheet either - I searched for W0L0AHL4882089466 on http://ecat24.com/opel/ - it'll tell you trim colour the minutest detail about the car but not the colour, weirdly.
jakebullet Posted August 27, 2018 Posted August 27, 2018 Real thicko question. Which way does the water go in a radiator? 2 1/4 pez landy. Am I right in thinking cold engine, thermostat closed, water goes round engine, then down bypass hose to pump, repeat until thermostat opens. Then water goes in bottom of radiator, travel upwards getting cooled and back in at the top thru thermostat? Or does it go other way, hot out top, cooler in from the bottom of the radiator? Trying to suss if thermostat is working correctly. Yes I know I should be pissing about with a pan & thermometer, but looking at things if I undo thermostat housing bolts I'm going to be learning just how much fun helicoiling is.
Guest Hooli Posted August 27, 2018 Posted August 27, 2018 I think you're right but if you run it up & keep feeling the rad pipes you'll soon find which one warms up first.
chadders Posted August 27, 2018 Posted August 27, 2018 We've just got a Skoda roomster and the front windows are heavily scratched.Any suggestions as to what to use, there seems to be conflicting views on how good the scratch removers are and whether they can cause more damage.
Noel Tidybeard Posted August 27, 2018 Posted August 27, 2018 afaik thermostat--->top of red--->bottom of rad--->back to engine
The Moog Posted August 28, 2018 Posted August 28, 2018 afaik thermostat--->top of red--->bottom of rad--->back to engineThis - you normally feel the top hose to see if it is getting hot to check it works ok.
rantingYoof Posted August 28, 2018 Posted August 28, 2018 The MmmV6's V5 document came through today (after the previous keeper sent it off on 1st August). They've got both my first name and surname wrong. Address and postcode is right. Does this need rectifying with urgency or, as I'm unlikely to keep the car more than a couple of months, should I just ignore it?
bolognasal spray Posted August 28, 2018 Posted August 28, 2018 fwiw my most recent use of (modern) hammerite seemed pretty good - better than I was expecting. It weathered pretty well and went on okay too. I bunged some on my focus's rear wheel arches and the sill too. Also my 500's centre stand, horn and swing arm - several winters later and it's quite decent. No signs of any oxidation coming back through on the swing arm which is the most exposed area treated, I reckon. However, the bike does see the oily rag on a very regular basis throughout winter so maybe that helps as much as if not more than the paint. Joloke 1
bolognasal spray Posted August 28, 2018 Posted August 28, 2018 totally agree about the oil-based thing btw Joloke 1
Christine Posted August 28, 2018 Posted August 28, 2018 Ford pervs, a question . I bought this radio in the charity for my fiesta mk1 . The console in the car has already been cut larger for a moderish cd player and i thought I would make up a new front to cover the hole ,and put this original type radio in .. However it seems too large so i guess earlier ones were a bit narrower across the width ?? It's dated 1990 ...
SiC Posted August 28, 2018 Posted August 28, 2018 I need more steel for welding. Anyone got recommendations of eBay sellers or online shops? Need 1mm, 3mm sheet and angle steel.
Christine Posted August 28, 2018 Posted August 28, 2018 I need more steel for welding. Anyone got recommendations of eBay sellers or online shops? Need 1mm, 3mm sheet and angle steel. Erm ...British car , you will be wanting 18 gauge ,not that metric shit . What bit is 3mm thick on a ADO16 ?
SiC Posted August 28, 2018 Posted August 28, 2018 Erm ...British car , you will be wanting 18 gauge ,not that metric shit . What bit is 3mm thick on a ADO16 ?Yeah whatever I need to use. I believe the body is predominantly 0.31in steel. So 0.8mm in proper and sensible units. I intend to use 3mm for around subframe mounting points.
Tickman Posted August 28, 2018 Posted August 28, 2018 I need more steel for welding. Anyone got recommendations of eBay sellers or online shops? Need 1mm, 3mm sheet and angle steel. A certain Oxford is made from quite a bit of stuff from here: https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Zintec-Coated-Mild-Steel-Sheet-DIY-MIG-TIG-Car-Repairs-Welding-etc/152719334396?var=452357622674 I think the thickest I have used on a car is 1.5mm and that was a nightmare to work and very much overkill at the time. SiC Posted August 28, 2018 Posted August 28, 2018 I don't know of any decent ones around Bristol that would sell that sort of stuff. Most seem to want to only sell car cleaning products and the odd spade terminal.
Tickman Posted August 28, 2018 Posted August 28, 2018 Zintec with the fumes it produces when welding gives me the fear! That is Galvanised steel, Zintec is not the same.
SiC Posted August 28, 2018 Posted August 28, 2018 I thought the fumes off Zintec weren't much nicer either? Less of them but still there.

There are a few steel stockists around Bristol, the first I clicked on seems to do it all. http://southweststeelsupplies.co.uk/mild-steel/

Tickman Posted August 28, 2018 Posted August 28, 2018 I actually went to them and they seemed to only want to supply Van/Lorry sized orders of steel.Very unhelpful, the local stockist to me is massive and HGV's get loaded etc but they are happy enough to sell a sheet of steel because my money is just as good to them. Some posts about Zintec from years ago: https://www.mig-welding.co.uk/forum/threads/zintec-gibbs-brand.817/ Obviously I haven't read it all.
cort16 Posted August 28, 2018 Posted August 28, 2018 The thing that really gave me the fear was using certain brake cleaners as a solvent to clean the metal or remove gunk before welding can great hyrdrogen chloride gas and kill you!I could easily have done this and not known. https://www.thefabricator.com/article/arcwelding/cleaning-material-with-brake-cleaner-before-welding-a-risky-move-that-can-turn-deadly SiC 1
