steveo3002 Posted July 30, 2018 Posted July 30, 2018 find something better to do with your time , sort of tool bag that does that has likley driven it hard and no care with servicing etc Talbot 1
Richard Posted July 30, 2018 Posted July 30, 2018 No. The old joke about 'I wouldn't start from here' applies. A decent example will turn up for less than the cost of putting that right. Talbot 1
kinkersaab Posted July 30, 2018 Posted July 30, 2018 to save me trapsing round google looking. Best place to buy pre 2001 plates for my polo? TIA L
Exiled_Tat_Gatherer Posted July 30, 2018 Posted July 30, 2018 RUN from that Merc..... I won't go as far as saying they won't have serviced it..... some of the scene guys I know have them immaculate underneath and really love their cars - but that just looks like some dick has tried to fit in without knowing what he was supposed to be doing. There was a lovely and rare Oldsmobile estate over here for sale.... just shy of 10K though so I kept my distance - but the magnet is strong on this one - he had it up for almost 2yrs at that price.... time for a cheeky bid methinks. It only showed up online again with 'patina' added - for an extra 2.5K on top!!! Wanker...... Talbot 1
sierraman Posted July 30, 2018 Posted July 30, 2018 Bumhats. This Mercedes W210 Estate has just popped up on the bay of snot. Correct engine, ideal specification for the car (has all the twiddly bits that I like) but some utter clot has done this to the bodywork: Merc1.jpg and this, including the smashed rear screen: merc2.jpg and let's face it, these need no additional help to rust. The bodywork "patina" is real.. it appears the paint has just been sanded down to bare metal and left. It's also out of MOT, and has been for 18 months, and it needs work: Merc3.jpg And predictably, the interior needs a damn good clean: Merc4.jpg The seller wants £500 for it, which is blatantly absurd. Yes, the engines can be worth £300-£400, but only if you find someone who wants it and you can get the car (or just the engine) to the buyer. Just how much of an uphill battle would it be to recover the bodywork back to reasonable? The front wings are bolt-on, so spares could be found and fitted, and a complete tailgate and doors could well be found from a breaker. My biggest concern is the rear wings. They look proper fucked. Would you, if you could get it cheap enough? It’s scrap. £200 at the weigh bridge. Forget any idea of getting the bodywork back, it’s silver so painting it would be a nightmare. If it was just the bodywork then you could have painted it by hand if you had the time and the inclination to do a good job but the smashed screen and the assorted other problems it’s got that probably aren’t disclosed. Talbot 1
Talbot Posted July 30, 2018 Posted July 30, 2018 It’s scrap. £200 at the weigh bridge. I completely agree. It's the specification of options on this model that keeps drawing me in: Digital climate control, Full electric memory drivers seat/steering wheel/mirrors. Folding mirrors, heated peeled cow interior, 7-seat estate and the OM606 engine. I've only ever seen one other with all of these toys fitted, and that was several years ago. If I had the time/inclination to move all these options over to another better car, it would be well worth it. Unfortunately, that would be hours and hours of work, time I just don't have. Hence, Bumhats.
steveo3002 Posted July 30, 2018 Posted July 30, 2018 very rare that people will do that to a nice gem of a car in the first place...usualy an old nail that on its last legs for a laugh
sierraman Posted July 30, 2018 Posted July 30, 2018 Might be worth the £200 for the parts on it. But usually stuff like this is generally fucked all round.
Slartibartfast Posted July 30, 2018 Posted July 30, 2018 The MX5 has aftermarket wheels on it. I'm not sure what the correct tyre pressure is supposed to be. Anyone got any ideas how I can find that out?

Anyone got any ideas how I can find that out?Factory recommendations should work ok, despite the different wheels. Fairly low on them, if I recall? xtriple 1
The Moog Posted July 30, 2018 Posted July 30, 2018 26 psi is the recommended pressure for mine. Might be different as yours is newer. Found that the psi make a huge difference in handling. Stick 30 in and you have I ever skates. Check driver's door slam I think.
MorrisItalSLX Posted July 30, 2018 Posted July 30, 2018 Would it be at all possible for someone to run some reg numbers for me? It is VERY ILLEGAL* for me to do this as an Australian. The reg numbers in question are KHM761W and PUC539R. Ta muchly. *The website dosn't work here

MorrisItalSLX Posted July 30, 2018 Posted July 30, 2018 And may I ask what vehicle/s wore those plates?
Lacquer Peel Posted July 30, 2018 Posted July 30, 2018 KHM 716W is a red Porsche, 1984cc. 924 I guess. No details for the other one. MorrisItalSLX 1
MorrisItalSLX Posted July 30, 2018 Posted July 30, 2018 Cheers for that, That Porker got exported down under. Other plate is on the 'bay.
Talbot Posted July 30, 2018 Posted July 30, 2018 I get nothing for PUC539R too. The Porsche comes up as "Carrera GT". Was that a 924 model?

Squire_Dawson Posted July 30, 2018 Posted July 30, 2018 Do any shiters recover cars? There's potentially a spares car which would need to go from Halesowen to Tywn.

mrbenn Posted July 30, 2018 Posted July 30, 2018 How much of a swine is it likely to be to change an exhaust back box on the driveway at home? Car in question had a whole new exhaust 3 to 4 years ago but back box now has a loose baffle. Isn't blowing but sounds like crap. Are ther middle and rear sections likely to be corroded together beyond a level that hammers and swearing will separate?
Kiltox Posted July 30, 2018 Posted July 30, 2018 Probably not if it’s only 3-4 years old. Not the toughest job. mrbenn 1
mrbenn Posted July 30, 2018 Posted July 30, 2018 Thanks. It isn’t a job I’ve done before. Parts are cheap and I’d prefer to avoid paying someone else to do it.
wuvvum Posted July 31, 2018 Posted July 31, 2018 Anyone know anything about Audi 80 load sensing valves? Mine has failed its MOT (among other things) on "Brake load sensing valve linkage defective and function impaired". What should I be looking for exactly? I have no idea how these things work (or indeed why a medium sized 4-door saloon needs one - I can understand the logic on a 6-tonne Sprinter) so if bits are broken or missing I won't really know what I'm looking for / at. Also, the only HBOLs I can find for the 80 only go from 1986 to 1990 - will these also work for the later cars or were lots of underneath bits also changed at the facelift?

As the weight in the boot increases (IE you put stuff in), the angle of the axle shifts, pulling on the spring and the lever in turn. This allows more pressure to the rear brakes when carrying heavy loads to stop the car trying to swap ends. Usual failure points are : Failed spring Arm stuck in one position ( penetrating fluid and some percussive maintenance usually resolves) Hope that makes sense.. wuvvum 1

The whole job took me about 5 hours. I wont be doing another one. Ever. But yes, it can be done with axle stands on your driveway. Lacquer Peel and mrbenn 2
jakebullet Posted August 1, 2018 Posted August 1, 2018 Is there such a thing as a brake pipe separator / tidy / clip thing? Like what you get for HT leads, I've got 2 pipes heading in the same direction and it would neaten them up a treat if clipped together.
Guest Hooli Posted August 1, 2018 Posted August 1, 2018 Aye I've seen things like that, can't recall on what though so no help I expect.
