Calling all welding gods......I have bought a decent Earth clamp for my little Clarke welder and think it would probably be better with a beefier earth lead. What size cable would be best and I presume it shouldn't be too long either?

Posted

I used to have a Clark 150 mini-mig (before I went abroad to work) and likewise changed the earth clamp and lead. It made a terrific difference to have a copper plated clamp of high grip professional quality which did not work loose like the original monkey-metal one.. Similarly the original cable was way too short.  Can't give you specifics but the replacement lead was as thick as a professional quality jump lead, multi-cored and surprisingly flexible. It was about 2m long - so that I could throw / kick it to one side rather than have it under foot all the time.  Did a lot of good work with that little welder.  imo much better than the Sealey I now have.

Oddly I was looking at the earth lead on the professional MIG we have and it's quite thin - about the thickness of a normal core cable I would guess maybe 16mmsq however 35mmsq welding cable is pretty cheap to buy, 70mmsq is about the thickness of a finger

have you looked where the other end of the earth is fixed to ?  i thought about doing mine but its crimped directly to the internal gubbins and not sure how i could join on the new bit nicely

Citroen c15 rear beam. Same as 305 estate? I was advised with my xsara to change the whole beam as something can oval meaning new bearings won't fit anymore and best to just change the lot. Is the situation same on the c15 or can the bearing and bushings be changed? I know it's a time consuming job on both accounts but can be done. Thanks

The bearings can be changed, I have a repair kit I'm the back of one of my 305 but my current plan is to swap a complete c15 axle onto my 305.

I'm going to look into getting one, mine has a slight knock knee approach!

Goonas - what's a good price for a 2001 1.8 petrol estate with full giffa spec bodywork & interior, runs ok, knackered rear axle bearings, rear doors that dont open, 92k & 5 weeks MOT? Would a £1.50 roffle sell?

Honestly, that's getting on for a free ticket raffle where the winner has to collect from a random car park somewhere.

TBH I'll be happy just to get the £70-80 collectionering costs for the new motor back. What is scrap worth these days? it's been years since I weighed owt in.

When cooking Pasta why does the water boil over as opposed to when boiling an egg it just boils? is it something to do with starch in the pasta?

Posted

I might just ring a few places to get it collected then, could stick it on here as spares/reapers incase anyone wants bits.

Why are all the raffles I want to take part in so far away? I want the Mercedes SLK but it's in bloody Lincolnshire. I want the floppy SAAB but that's somewhere mils away.

Is there no plan in force for delivery? Surely some enterprising Shiter could earn themselves a few quid delivering to all us bastards that choose to live in the sunny (ha!) South West?

Starch in the pasta my arse. Are you Jamie Oliver? Your pasta pan used to be part of a KV6.

boil over as opposed to when boiling an egg it just boils? is it something to do with starch in the pasta?

Quote:

So why does it happen? It has everything to do with the composition of pasta. Pasta is made from flour, water, and sometimes egg—that means it's basically just starch and protein rolled out into different shapes and dried. It's the starch molecules that are important. Once they're heated in a moist environment—like your pot of water—the starch will absorb more and more water until it finally bursts. That sends little starch molecules into your water, resulting in white foam.

It's the foam layer on top that causes the problems. What has happened is the starch makes the bubbles that were already there more stretchy and pliable, so it takes longer for them to burst. A lot of bubbles on the surface doesn't allow for proper ventilation of steam, meaning the pot of boiling water becomes superheated if the pot isn't stirred or the frothy layer skimmed off the top in time. The trapped steam causes the frothy bubbles to expand and pop up, resulting in boiling-hot pasta water all over your stove if you're not careful.

So nothing like a KV6 really.... Starch plays no part in those boiling over. The cause is usually a failed expansion tank cap.

And all those KV6 molecules and atoms made into a pan.

No,  it caused by the bubbles of boiling having to form on an irregularity, yer egg has a relatively smooth surface so bubbles can only form at few  isolated points on its surface thus not many bubbles form and rise, yer foreign pasta stuff is as rough a rough thing surface wise so with the water in  boiling mode bubbles form all over the pasta's rough as arses surface, usually far too many to gently rise and burst spontaneously in the air so vast numbers stampede upwards and cascade everywhere scientifically.  The confusion is caused by use of pasta in the construction of kettle rovers predominately the sills and rear wheel arches being made of lasagne.

Grateful for the SQA thread (I'm just surprised I don't use it as often as I need to)!

My Fiesta is being a bit reluctant at the turn of the key, not a huge surprise when below -0C, but I want to cover the most likely option(s) before I incur any unwanted expenses. Seems to be only when cold, and it behaves better when warm. Other electricals seem fine, but obviously the first crank of an engine will use a hell of a lot more energy than the radio etc...Generally I'm wary of doing electrical stuff on cars despite having a decent GCSE in electronics because I don't fancy cocking something up beyond redemption.

So...

First thought was the battery (easily sorted), then the starter motor (which according to Trigger the other week is right at the back and therefore beyond my modest skillset, and finally the alternator, which I would probably glance over my Haynes before handing over the job to someone else, haha.

Get the battery droptested, even halfrauds do it free these days. It tests it under a big load, like when you start the car.

Are laguna 2s canbus? I've put a nice leather electric adjustable and heated seat into the van, I tried putting power straight to the motor but nothing happened, I'd like be be able to recline and turn in the heater at least.

Any ideas?

Arse what type of signals are the motors going to need? Am assuming there's only one way for a heated seat element to work?
