I am looking for front shock absorbers for my 940 low pressure turbo as the current ones are a bit wet, would these be the same as they are for a turbo!

http://www.demon-tweeks.co.uk/performance/shock-absorbers/car/volvo/940/1997/2-3-turbo/bilstein-b4-gas-shock-absorber-front

Also while it is apart is there anything else worth changing while I am there? Car has done 135,000 miles and it is the original set on the front.

My immediate advice would be to search the part numbers on eBay and buy from demon tweeks on there-free delivery;)

I'd also consider top mounts/bumpstops and possibly a front arm refresh as it'll all be apart.

Try Mick's garage online. I looked at suspension bits for the starlet. Then left and my next banner ad was offering 10% with the code ELF10

Is there a way to get the reg number of a car listed on eBay by extracting it from the page code? I'm sure there is but can't recall how.

Posted

Yeah, click on "vehicle status report" in the description (won't work if it's not there). It takes you to another page, find the bit in the URL of that page that says vrm= and paste that into a base-64 decoder to find the reg without paying for the report.

I always wonder why I still see cars on the M11 motorway doing 60 mph when it is almost deserted, and then, for absolutely no apparent reason, braking. Anyone care to let me know what i've missed?

And over the last month yet another phenominum has hit the M11. When traffic is moving slowly in queues in all three lanes, why are more than a few drivers leaving massive gaps between the car in front and themselves? Often 200 yards, or, as I saw this morning, about 400 yards. Again, what am I missing?

Where can I get someone who will organise my life, make me sort out (some of) my health issues, find me somewhere nice to live, get my Mazda out of the garage and into a nice warm MOT bay, do my hovering and dusting and generally sort out my life so it's almost worth living?

Do Russian hookers offer those kinds of services? Would I be better off looking around for a different eastern block hooker? These are the sort of question that no amount of 'Googleing' answers!

Get married.

It's not you missing owt, it's them missing basic intelligence.

Often I leave a gap so I dont do the speed up then slow down thing, you can go at a constant pace - that is until someone decides you have left a gap and must fill it.

If everyone left a gap and just trudged along in second gear or whatever speed instead of constantly starting and stopping 4 feet behind the car in front, most traffic jams would vanish.

After going to look at, and deciding against, a slightly  very fucked Focus RS, I did the next logical thing and bought a Kuga. This has a DW10C engine, 163 BHP. I assume it won't run on OMGVEG? Cheers.

TRUMP Sticker - in a moment of drunken foolishness some weeks ago, I bought a Trump/Sense bumper sticker from the ebays, thinking it might be an amusing idea to add to my stickerbombed bay window, possibly upside down for added hysteria. Since then the fucker has only gone & won and the world is a different place.

Should I still stick it on?

Should I stick it on upside down?

Am I likely to get a kicking from blokes with Confederate flags?

Etc.

I dunno the answer - but similarly, some months ago I bought a Trump Tower mug(oddly enough made in England)  from the second hand shop for 50p for a laugh.  I've been keeping the fecker out of sight since he won.

Pug 307 - I know a bloke who has the pump and rack fitted to his 1970s AMC Javelin.

Yeah,  if it's like the prat (is that expression still used ?) who over took me yesterday, pulled in and slowed down.. He was reading and then two-thumb-typing a reply to a text.

We'll have cameras soon that look through the windows to catch the like of these.. and others - whatever they're doing - that not associated with being 'in safe control of a mota veHicle'

I like to leave a nice big gap between me and the car in front so I've got a chance to avoid a collision should they suddenly decide an emergency stop is appropriate and it saves on speed up slow down types as well

Same with traffic lights never drive right up behind the car in front when stationary as it leaves you no room to manouver and no space to build momentum.

I have a LPG kit off a Volvo I got from Lankytim ages ago and a BLOS mixer lying around. Why shouldn't I just plumb it into my Primera and if I did would the fact that it was open loop fuck up the cat/make it fail the MOT?

Posted

If you test on gas the limits are the same as for non cat cars as far as I know, that's certainly how it worked when I had the C5.

The limits are different for gas, there is an equivalence factor because the HC emission will be propane not hexane. The emission testing machine does this automatically if you select "gas" as fuel type.

You still have to pass a cat test if the car would need one.

But you can get away with removing the cat as the decat can be considered part of the LPG conversion, unless the MOT rules have changed or my initial understanding was flawed.

Actually are you interested in selling the kit? What tank is it?

I seemingly keep returning to Autotrader to look at future replacements of the knob-mobile, and essentially I keep returning to five cylinder, large, wafty, comfortable and evil relatively modern contraptions.

Has anyone any experience of the Mondeo Mk4 with the 2.5T Volvo engine in it? They're a bit of a sleeper and, with the promise of a cabin spacious enough to play badminton in and five cylinder rawr, keep tickling my fancy.

Obviously it'll have things like a DMF, and the cambelt intervals are at around 100k, but as they're relatively rare I'm wondering if a smattering of good vehicular-minded folk like yourselves have had opportunity to experience one or know anyone who has?

I have tried wading the single-make/owner's club forums and would rather be sarcastically put down by you lot any day than told it's epic and awesome and everything is perfect.

This is a very stupid question as in typical Autoshite fashion I shouldn't be considering a car swap, but it's been nearly THIRTEEN MONTHS now so what can a guy do?

Posted

They're not spacious. I find them claustrophobic in the rear and I've never had that before.

Posted

I do know they do a 2.5 turbo in titanium trim. That would be a good sleeper. My dad has a 54 plated 2.0tdci which has a big boot but not much rear legroom. I found the driving position a bit off and the tdci was constantly up and down the box unless you was on a bypass.

Good cars so I've heard. The diesel in particular a bit less prone to spontaneously combust than the Mk3. But then it's a PSA unit so that's probably why.

I hate "personal" plates......but.

My AMC was plate-raped some time ago by a previous owner.  In the olden days yank motors seem to have been given low numbers so they could be fitted onto a square plate an be mounted sensibly on the US licence plate aperture.

Once the world went mad and people started caring/paying money for low numbers, a lot like mine got sold.

It seems the original plate for mine might be for sale at £1250 or so.

I dunno if this is a good price for such shit - generally I wouldn't pay 50p, and I'm not sure if it's worth reuniting it with its original number - but a (very small) part of me is toying with the idea.

Current plate is TRP 130F and the original is VWB 2F (I assume it's been on some VW).

Electric handbrake, how does that work when it comes to MOT time?

Do you just flick the switch and let it brake/lock up? oh i don't know.

Where can I get £50K from? I have seen a car that makes mine look like the plain lass next door while the leggy Russian supermodel walks by!

Modern content warning!

Our 307 has a rattly clunking noise going over bumps. Recently it's started doing it on uneven road surfaces too.

Jacked it up there and all I can find is some play in both front outer tie rods, passenger side the worst.

Would this be enough to make the noise? It's pretty audible inside the car, even over the heater / radio on low volume.

The bushes on the lower arms look fine, no play in the lower ball joints, anti roll bar links are fine as are the roll bar mounts under the car from what I can see.

There is vibration through the steering at 70+ but this only started when I swapped the front and rear wheels, I'll get them balanced and see if that helps

I replaced both springs in the summer and one of the top mounts was kippered so I replaced it. With hindsight I should have replaced both but one seemed newer and dead on the other was falling to bits.

You can pick up a non-dating five-character plate for less than £1250 if you're not bothered about what those digits are.  Dunno if it's 'worth' reuniting the car with it's original number, but if you have the cash now, you could always* sell the plate on again if you need the money back in future.

How are you testing the drop links. You probably won't find any play with it jacked up. It needs the weight of the car on it.
