Silicone grease, help lubricate the runners and makes the seals swell stopping wind noise, good for door and sunroof seals as well.

Nice one.  Is it any good for making dried out 1970s window rubbers supple and non-porous again?

Whilst driving on the A75 recently noticed a lot of pop bottles by the side of the road half full of what looked suspiciously like piss! Stupid question, but WTF? If it is indeed piss how did someone manage to piss into a pop bottle whilst driving?

I bought a bottle of "gummi pflege" from ebay for £5.95 as all the door and boot rubbers on my Mercedes were hard and flat. a couple of applications of this stuff, and all rubbers now supple and leak and wind proof. Lovely quiet drive now.

Just seen the thread where Vulgalour stomped off. Hope he calms down soon and resumes normal service...

Nice bloke.

Ditto............that thread over-reved and exploded

Hamm. They'd need to be a 1/4 inch long! Bugger

Fit headlight wiper blades. Trim if they still sweep the crack.

Just been watching Wheeler Dealers. Ed was removing a suspension bush and said "I'll use an old trick, using an oversize socket, some washers and a nut I can remove the bush with a ratchet" which he then did, but I couldn't follow what he had done.

He then boshed the new bush in, using a similar setup, but again I didn't follow...

Can someone explain what he would have been doing?

He used a nut and bolt as a press and forced the bush out with the socket, usually into a bigger socket.

At work we have a waste oil heater that burns something like 25L per hour when it's working. The main drawback is the shite the oil leaves in the heater, it needs stripping and decoking weekly with a more major overhaul every 10 weeks or so.

I dunno if people buy waste oil to run these, we're more than self sufficient and still get rid of some.

There is a lot of business in old oil, not just 'shiters hanging around the back of chip shops!

This website is offering 3pence per litre, either cooking or vehicle oil waste. That is not valuing the energy content very highly!

Can motor oil of the same grade but from different manufactures be mixed together?

I have 4 or 5, 5ltr new not old oil but may have a ltr or so left in the bottom that are taking up space in the garage.

There is a theoretical risk that some of the additives may react with each other or that the concentrations of additives in the mix will drop below protective levels.

In practice, I've done it many times (because I'm a cheapskate) with no issues.

There's plenty of independent car hire companies on the island. Some may be brilliant, but the ones I've used offered some dangerously shagged cars - not helped by the fact that the VRT test over there is two yearly !

I have fond* memories of a Picanto that violently pulled to the left on braking, a Lanos with drift-tastic bald tyres and leaky shock absorbers and a Doblo with a fucked brake master cylinder that necessitated furious pedal pumping to stop !

Is it possible to get someones address from Reg number ?

(Without contacting DVLA)

I'm saying no.  There certainly shouldn't be, anyway.

Does cartakeback give the best prices for scrap cars?  Currently offering £125 for the 405. Would I get more if I went to the place directly?

Our local caretakeback place no longer comes up on the site when I checked other day for punto. Last time I took a 406 there he was astounded when he said it says 160 to pay as he would have only gave a ton

don't they (or maybe they used to) use old engine oil as one of the ingredients in news print, which is why you get filthy fingers reading the paps?

A car has came up local and cheap, but no room at the inn.

Likely need to go see it today or tomorrow and try to get shot of the polo/jag as well.

Too much hassle?

with a bit of luck, I've just sold the civic (assuming the chap comes back from the bank and doesn't change his mind on the way) with today being the first of the month, will I end up paying for road tax for June ? Or should I date the v5 as 31st may instead ? a years tax is only £125 so it's only beer money were talking about but I do quite like beer :)

I sorned the jag on sat, but they still took the money today-i assume the system didnt update?

Has anyone managed to get a refund issued?

Posted

I've sold a car and bought a car. The tax DD has been taken out for the car I no longer own, so I assume I'll get a refund of that, by cheque, that I need to get to a bank. Eventually.

At the same time, I'm checking the SAAB tax every day on the website and I'll tax it as soon as it shows there's a problem, don't see there's an issue with that? Is there?

No, I did the same thing recently. It took about 3 weeks and I thought I'd got away with a month, right up until it suddenly said tax expired 3 weeks ago and it robbed me of back tax for that period when I taxed it.

You can never win.

In other news I noticed today I've got 5 lots of tax going out on the first of every month.

Posted

Aah well, it might just offset it long enough to be out of next pay cheque. Mind you, they don't take the first DD until a few weeks later do they?

I'm quibbling over £20 mind. After I ballsed up the insurance (got the start date wrong, they couldn't change it so had to cancel and take it out again, two lots of payment and no refund yet) that seems a tiny issue.

Still, currently it's my £20 and not theirs.

anyone know where i could buy a wing for a suzi vitara?

it is i think a 2000 model year 4U2 3 door one. or am i going to have to see if a main stealer can get such a thing?

SWMBO had a pick at a piece of plastic on the bottom of the o/s/f wing and lo and behold, a hole was hiding behind it!

she's quiet taken with the car so repairing it with structural duck tape isn't an option, she wants steel.... plus the drivers side isn't that clever around the body kit, wheel arch trim bit around the wheel arch itself.

the plan is to put a pair of wings on it, and rattle can them over. the wings do bolt on.

Posted

no, i think that the wings off of a grand vitara are different, i have been looking on the bay of e, so far without success!

i guess like alan sugar my search will continue...

I did this, as luck would have it the Escort's rent expired 2 days into the new month, if that makes sense? As you say it's beer money but I get a small sense of satisfaction out of it
