I'm pretty sure that the A80 uses the VAG three point runner system that harks back to the mid '70's Beetle. (Rear runners in the Sill and the Centre tunnel, single front mounting centrally), this is shared with pretty much all VW's/Audis.

Not sure on the A4 though.

Saw a guy spraying alloy wheel cleaner over his matt black Polo, before jetwashing it the other day. Is that, as I suspect, a gradual paint matting process in action?

Cheers, I'll try and get to a scrappy to have a look.

Meanwhile the car seems to be running ok now, I had a quick look at the fuel filter, it's got a sort of jacket affair over it and without removing said jacket I couldn't see, or feel, a drain at the bottom. I'll replace the filter as a matter of course though and get a better look at it.

Well, my BMW buyer seems to be leaving me alone now after giving me a big fat neg. I don't think I will bother challenging it as I want this to finish now. Was rather surprised to see that out of 91 successful transactions with positive feedback, one negative gets you docked 10%. Ouch. That means I'll have to send an explanatory message to all I want to buy from and sell to I guess.

At least it appears to be over anyway.

I probably know the answer to this but I have changed my camper insurance over today to the new van. I asked if I could get commuting and also 3rd party cover and they chucked it in for free. Will I be covered to drive Scooters new steed up to Scotland if it doesnt have its own current insurance?

Sweet - my new wheels are here! Balls - the fronts won't fit without 5mm spacers.

Now my dumb question is since they are wheel nuts as opposed to bolts, is there any danger in having 5mm less thread. Trial fitted them with the standard nuts (I know I need to get some alloy ones) and there's around 4.5 turns until they're tight. I have been told 3 is normally ok? Also, since that would make the front track 5mm wider would it be worth also putting spacers on the rears?

Anyone know what the website was, which listed all the wheel PCD's and offsets? It was posted here a while back, and I bookmarked it, but my bookmarks got zeroed recently, and I could really use the info.

Need a steel wheel for the V70: breakers locally haven't got any x70's at all  . 5-bolt RWD Volvos, yes. I even found some GM stamped 5-bolt FWD 6x15"s (ET49), which look very, very similar. Hence the need for info!

...Need a steel wheel for the V70...

I'm breaking an 850 just now, mainly for parts to take to my one in Thailand, but I've put it on the Volvo forum to sell off a few bits. Someone asked about wheels but didn't come back to me yet. Scroll down this post, I have a 15" steel for you:

When I signed the deal on the Thai one, it had chav specials on:

...but the seller promised some standard rims. They turned out to be 740 rims which looked ok but drove even worse than the 17s, and rubbed the arches (stuck out too far.)

I printed out that Carl Salter page then convinced him they still weren't right, so he found me some Cetus 15s which are fine.

I have some centre caps from eBay to take back with me in November.

In conclusion, avoid RWD wheels on a FWD Ovlov.

Oh, and three turns of thread holding a wheel on is a tiny amount of metal. I heard you need at least eight full turns to be sure. Certainly sounds more like it.

Is it possible to stop at Lymm Services (M56/M6 interface) and NOT be accosted by some likely lads who've 'got some extra stock/returns the boss doesn't know about/genuine designer stuff/knocked off gear' in the back of their car or van? In fact of all the many times I've stopped their I think I've only not been accosted by these types about twice.

Naturally I did the Autoshite right thing and bought something off them, though for a third of the original asking price

Does anyone here know how long petrol can be stored before it goes off? I've recently acquired a 1978 Lada 1500 & this morning I drained the fuel tank & what came out smelt SO bad it could qualify for a United Nations ban under some chemical treaty! Bloody gallons of the stuff, too, even though the gauge read empty! Anyway, it poured all over the flat tarmac area outside my lock up & eventually evaporated.... But the smell's still there even after a few rain showers this afternoon!

Is it still inflammable & could I have saved it? I suspect it was (WAS!) 4 star, vintage 2002, as that's when the car's last tax disc ran out! I did get it going, after changing the plugs, coil & pouring neat unleaded into the carb. I'll be ordering a new fuel pump tomorrow (the Science Museum's phone number is never far away!) and once it's fully up & running I'll post some pictures...

Did it smell like old paint? The lighter fractions will have evaporated, leaving the stuff you emptied from the tank. It would have been ok to dilute it by adding fresh petrol to it and use the stuff as it's the best way to get rid of old petrol!

The 1994 cc Diesel found in later Rovers - is it Perkins, O series or what?

Posted

Pretty sure it's 'O' series. Perkins Prima was found in Maestro, Montego and earlier LDV200s, later 200s had the PSA unit.

Rover 218s had the PSA engine too.

Andrew: I suspect the old fuel you had could be used in small quantities in old diesel engines.

Posted

If it's the bubble-shaped 200 and Civic-based 400, then it should be the L-series - I can't get onto AROnline at the moment to check. Wuvvum should be able to tell us, seeing as he's smoking Audi A4s in his 200 diesel.

'Man in pub' knowledge strikes again. It is a Rover L series.

Petrol can be used to 'winterise' diesel or vegetable oil, I'd have tried it, lots of strange stuff has been in my fuel tank.

I'm not in the pub but have stood to be corrected!

Got a splash of old petrol in my diesel tank at the moment too, no side effects at all.

Posted

i have a splash of Brut 33 in my petrol tank at the moment, but there you go....

Thanks for that - I have once again been trawling Autotrader looking at cars that I can put on a credit card, and the bubble Rover 25 is one of them (in streetwise guise too I'll have you know).

Still have not totally given up all hope of getting a Frontera. Im off work after Monday 7am for 2 weeks so will be a hunting....

Can traffic light cameras do you if you're turning right, or do they just point forward?

What's the script with disabled tax for non-disabled car users?

Been offered a car that's on disabled tax, owner says it can go with the car and evidently isn't arsed about it. Would it be some sort of OMG UR NT INSHURED U WILL KILL PPL AN LOOSE UR LISENSE shenanigans or is it ok to drive with it?

Didn't SOC get pulled for this? I think it was part of his FUK U COPPA U ANT GT SHIT ON ME comeback that was one of the best things I've ever read on here.

If I recall it was his wife's Sierra that they tugged and she is registered disabled. He was insured to drive on it and Durham's finest decided they wanted a word.

You would have to get the tax classification changed to avoid Bozza and Lozza giving you the rotating blue plantpot down a Chester backroad. I'm sure someone on here would know better.

You will need to go to a dvla local office with an original insurance certificate, reg doc,mot and the payment for the road tax,you will need the complete eg doc from the seller, not just the v5c.

I think.

Living near Heathrow there are loads of trailers for artics parked up all over the place. Alot of them leave their rear doors open. Is this to point out that they ave nothing to nick or is it to air them or summat?

Also are they just allowed to park up and sleep wherever they want?

Posted

Ta lads.

I can tax it at the local DiVLAds* office but wasn't aware of any legalities of driving with spacker tax if not actually a raspberry myself. Well, not a physical one anyhow.

I suppose a trip there may be worth a shot, if nothing else it always seems to be pretty full of MILFS who want to put a private number on their Range Rover but have only bought a copy of their gas bill and the latest edition of Hello! magazine as forms of identitity.

There's also usually a dearth of quite fugly, miserable looking birds behind the counter who seem to enjoy telling said bints they can't help them without the correct paperwork.

Moog: to prove the trailers are empty.

New keeper bit (V5c/2) is fine for transferring cars off disabled and onto PLG, but it does need doing at a VRO.

Wazza and Dazza are indeed keen to find non disabled people driving around on a disabled disk - it's actually worse than not having tax at all (to them). To use one legally, you either have to be receiving higher rate DLA (or equivalent) or be driving on behalf of someone who is. The disabled person doesn't actually have to be in the car, as long as you are doing something for them (so going to ASDA is fine, but going to work isn't)

PS, wat, it was Teeside's finest, not Durham.
